We are a family of having the most personal quads owned between my wife, 3 daughters, and myself. First, the posse of blasters in the mix is what makes up most of our collection mind blowing!! The next step and one that I would recommend to ANYONE with a blaster is to get a PWK 39mm carb and convert it to ALKY!! It’s the CHEAPEST 15-20% increase in power across the chart and alcohol is way cheaper than race gas!! U will be amazed and it feels like riding a stk banshee and almost 1/2 the weight!! Good LUCK and ENJOY ALL! NOTE: If my 3 daughters (12yrs,18yrs old, 21yrs,) can tame a 240 BB on ALKY and from a lot of seat time, the two oldest are on no bar, full LSR chassis, 300ft sand draggers!

Mail from a German engineer // Dear Michael, I am from Germany and I am a mechanical engineer as well as a master vehicle technology engineer. I love your channel!!! Actually I am not a KZbin person at all :) but I look forward to every new broadcast from you. I always find your positive nature, your determination as well as your excellent expertise motivating and fascinating. I have rarely seen such professional work from a garage! Some of your videos I have watched umpteen times :) Here's an idea: I work a lot myself on quads, motorcycles and the like, preferably on two-stroke engines. Now I have started a new project some time ago: a YAMAHA RAIDER jet ski. Super exciting technology. Very similar to quads but so different and also a two-stroke engine. Maybe this would be a future project. Many greetings from Düsseldorf, Germany :)

You're right about being tough estimating the labor but I know from watching your work that the best shop with the best mechanics are not going to be anywhere as meticulous as you are with prepping and assembling. Shops are all about the clock. Excellent work!

Im a ATV and dirtbike mechanic in Mexico, Labor is so cheap down here, that in just labor i'd estimate around 500-700 USD sometimes depending on the shop they may charge double the amount but im talking about rally big shops. And that is a lot of money for us, because the cost of living is just cheaper too

I have to agree with your assessment at the end regarding how long it takes to do certain things. I took Auto Body class in my last years of high school in the late 90's early 2000's. I can say that even though I never got to work in a body shop professionally like I hoped for that the average customer wanting their car paint freshened up or redone completely have absolutely no clue what goes in to doing paint CORRECTLY. Especially if they're wanting paint that glistens like a show car and expecting to get it for nothing. My Auto instructor was awesome. He was old school and believed the books the state tried making us learn from were useless. For him it was hands-on or nothing. Because there's only so much you can read in a book and get the idea of what to do. In order to get good you had to actually do it. Before we even got to touch a spray gun we had to learn panel prep which involved sanding, pounding out small dents, using body filler scarcely and using your eyes to examine things closely. He gave us old fenders and hoods to practice on. It would take us hours just sanding the panels to bare metal, pounding out dents, doing body filler if needed and sanding it uniform before we could even think about spraying on a primer coat. For me the way the instructor taught was great because I'm not fast and will never make myself fast for anyone. I want the job done properly the first time. But it also has its' drawbacks as there's a lot of things I want to do that I never get around to doing. Because for me if I can't do the job correctly I would rather not do it at all than do it half assed. Sadly in order to do things correctly it requires a lot of money and a place to do it which I have neither of. :P But I've been slowly gathering tools here and there as I'd really like to get back into painting. A good enough air compressor that can run a spray gun is the most expensive thing to get IMO. Plus it needs a safe place to go as well and I don't have a garage. A cheap enclosed car port should work for starters. :)

I really believe if you would build one some of these guys may start making parts again. Please do a quadracer build. You have already built a quadzilla, a honda 250r, and a banshee. Wish you would finish out the 2 stroke quads. I'm sure people would love to see a tecate built and I know I want to see you build a quadracer. Thanks for the videos man.

Man, people don’t believe me when I tell them that my Vito’s 240 build was in the upper 40hp range running on 110 octane. The cylinder came from Vito’s but Allan over at CT did all my porting, decked my head to bump up the compression, 3mm stoke crank, 34mm Air Striker carb, Boyesen Rad Valve, CT Right Bend pipe, can’t remember what clutch and basket that was in it but Allan supplied that, Uni Foam filter, Oil Injection block off, and it fucking RIPPED!!! My suspension was Laeger +3 a arms, Works Black Widow shocks modified to work with my suspension, +3 swing arm, Durablue adjustable axle, Lonestar + 2 stem, an oversized fuel tank, old school bead lock wheels (can’t remember the brand), and I ran ITP Holeshot tires. I do remember to use the wheels I had to switch to Banshee hubs in the rear but they were a direct swap. This was before the hydraulic brakes were available and I had Banshee front and rear brakes. I kept up with 250Rs and all the 400cc machines when they were coming out. The blaster is one of the best budget machines for someone wanting to try their hand at racing. Also, the blaster is only 40.7” wide, so +3 a arms and +4 axle brought it out to 46.7” which seems to be a sweet spot in the woods. The extended axle helped keep the front end down because the wheelbase is so short that it will wheelie and flip when launching or climbing bills. There are Yamaha extended swing arms that are pretty decent for the blaster for like $300+ on eBay, when you build it up try that swing arm if you can’t. American Star Racing makes long travel +3 a arms for the blaster for a decent price too, and the first gen YFZ450 front shocks are a direct bolt in with those arms. Have rocket Ron build those shocks for you and the front end will be gold. The Honda 450R rear shock bolts right up but you’ll need some spacers made, Ken O’Conner Racing makes those spacers for like $15. All that will make the blaster ride and feel more like a full size quad. Removing the front fenders or running race cut fenders will give you more room for your knees, but you will get dirtier. That is a trade off you’ll have to think about. I do think that the race cut fenders look really good with the YFZ style rear fenders that Maier makes for the blaster. Also, a 450R front hood looks good when bolted into those Maier race cut fenders... that’s purely esthetics though. I really really can’t wait to see top quad and then watch you build this into a monster. I wish I had the money because I’d send you one of my blasters tips build so you could put that one in the “sabo museum of awesomeness” 😂
@MichaelSabo
@MichaelSabo Жыл бұрын
Dude thanks for all the tips in the blaster game! Biggest one that stood out to me was the 1st gen YFZ shocks! I think I will swap the fronts with them and the rear with 400EX. Your old blaster sounds like it was badass!

@@MichaelSabo oh yeah it was sick for a blaster for sure. I raced a blaster for 5 years from ages 12 to 17 when I switched to a 250R. My parents divorced so I had to stop racing because it got too hard. I’m building a 250R to send it in some XC C-class races. I’ll have the build up on KZbin, I’m almost done collecting parts and my videos will be up as I film it. It will be a “budget build”, as budget friendly as I can make it without using chinesium parts 😂. I will be doing a blaster for my daughter too, and then I plan on doing a “pro build” blaster. The premise of the channel will be to show people the cost of racing from the build to the track. I’ll also be doing reviews on parts, gear, and riding parks. I would be honored if you could rip some of my builds whenever we cross paths out on the trail or at some of the ATV events. By the way, how are you liking the Full Flight arms on the KFX? I picked up some +1 full flight arms for the 250R I’m building and I’m pairing that with 450R front shocks. My rear shock was rebuilt by Noleen for XC racing and my weight before I got the shock so I got lucky there. The guy I got the fronts from spray painted them so they are in rough shape and I NEED to get those built... at least the clickers all work still.

Mike, she sounded good, my friend, I have a blaster myself, and they rip also they are a blast to ride. As far as the total cost, if you exclude your labor, you basically have a brand new quad for 6 grand or so. I dont know what they cost brand new nowadays, but that doesn't sound too bad to me because you have performance parts, plus it has a unique design, which is sweet. So all in all I think you're doing alright. Keep up the good work, and I can't wait for the competition and to see what's in store for the next project.

To answer the question at the end of the video about the cost of labor, I would say around 14-15 thousand to replicate what you did. I worked at a Honda powerhouse and when jobs like this came up they charged a very pretty penny. But sometimes you take a loss because we can’t factor in somethings that get in the away such as a stripped bolt or a bearing that’s stuck, love the video I’ll be back for more

All blaster suspension sucks. And what's even worse is the fact companies like Elka know that it sucks and cranks their prices up to $500+ for an upgrade. The cheapest option for better suspension is to throw a Honda 400ex shock into the back with a little bit of modding. Some people have been known to put banshee shocks in the front as well.

Micheal, I built a 04 Blaster all stock but.... VForce 4 reeds and total night and day difference. So damn snappy and the power is a world of difference even with my stock pipe. I watched and listened to the quad you rode and yup, have to get the VForce 4. It will totally wake that thing up like a mini banshee. Trust me on this. I did all the deltes like you did too btw.

I have been thinking about doing +2 front and rear with suspension, the only thing is, the space between the plastics for the rider, really isn't big enough for an adult. I've done a few more hours of riding since I filmed this and I'm constantly hitting my knees on the plastics.
@christopheravery5808

@@MichaelSabo if you are looking at the alba arms they are fine for “average” trail riding or youth racing, but it’s just a personal recommendation to use American Star or Fireball Racing for the A-Arms. +2 is usually a sweet spot for most quads but the blaster is VERY narrow. +3 on the blaster will be close to running +1 on a 250R or 400EX as far as width. I plan on getting Alba arms for my daughter’s blaster to start, but she is nowhere near the rider you or I are at this point I’m time. One thing that helps a lot with the “cockpit” is to go with an extended steering stem. It will make it feel a little bigger. As for your knees, you’ll either have to shave the front fenders or remove them completely. That’s about the only option to make room for your knees. Also, running a +2 or +3 swing arm will allow you to sit further back in the seat too, and that does kind of help too. Like I said before, the wheelbase is hella short. +3 will make it as long as a 400EX, I’ve had my old XC race blaster sitting side by side with my 400EX and it was maybe an inch wider and the same length as a bone stock 400.

I bought a cheap Amazon kit think it came with a factory bore wiseco piston and rings but Chinese head, and jug, with a set of v force 4 reeds and a fmf gold series fatty along with a fmf 50. Cal silencer and ran 12/38 gearing I believe and that bike was an absolute monster for what it is, I'd flat out eat up a 300ex every time it'd stand up on the back tires in 4th and go as far and as fast as you wanted on the back wheels. Had a lot of fun on that bike and had a lot of hours till the clutch messed up on me an I got rid of it

For the love of god, give that Blaster a proper 20cc head re-cut, 28-32mm Powerjet carb and some basic porting. Excellent way to show what Yamaha left on the table. there's a reliable 10 -15hp still left in there for very little money. Run KFX 450 shocks with the Diamond J brackets and it's Winner winner chicken diner!!

Honda 400ex shock in the back and Banshee shocks in the front are the best swaps for the blaster. The 400ex isn't a direct swap but all you need is some spacers and a new bolt. The Banshee shocks are a direct swap.

@@Airstrike_snoozed_them the stock Blaster and Banshee shocks are both glorified pogo sticks. I run 450ER front shocks and a rear 450ER Elka with remote reservoir on my Blaster and they are leaps and bounds above Banshee shocks. No contest...

I think if you disassemble the entire Blaster, get all the parts ordered up, and powder-coat the frame (and anything else) yourself before handing it over to any garage, (I think) the labour cost will be way less. I'm not saying that's the case, 100% sure. But I think it would be. If you have them order the parts and wait for them to come in and be unpacked, etc. that's all labour cost as well. Also, if a Blaster would be sold like this at the Yamaha dealer, the retail price would probably be near double as well. Face it, it are all upgraded parts...

I love watching these videos. I understand your dilemma with the cost of labor with the blaster. However, obviously you would never get your money back if you paid any shop to do the work. For me personally, if I had a machine and the money to build it better, I would want to do the work myself. (Whatever I am capable of). It would be a great learning experience, save a ton of cash, and a sense of satisfaction when completed. Great videos sir!!
