If Gus’s plan was put in place the Storm would never have been stripped of their titles. Smith, Cronk,Slater, Inglis for starters were developed at Storm.

Yes, there should be a discount (10%?) on the salary cap for self developed players. Some clubs are just vultures who swoop in at every opportunity. Furthermore I'd like clubs who poach players developed by other clubs to pay a player development fee for that player. That system is in place in European soccer and some (up to 40-50%?) of that development money should flow through to the junior clubs from where the NRL clubs have recruited these players.

Clubs with bigger geographical areas in the country spend alot of money just encouraging young kids to play and increasing the talent pool quantity. Then a “development” club picks the eyes out of them at 14-15 years of age.

The only discount should be for players who go from Harold Matthews to NRL without a change in clubs. It should be 100% discount from cap.

Imagine if the Panthers hadn't lost one junior in the last 3 years. There reserve grade would make the top 4 in the NRL! You can't keep everyone. Junior development should be for the game not clubs.

Yeah but penrith are the only club that has been doing junior development on a large scale for a long period of time atm.The argument is everyone should be doing what they are because it's better for the game AND the clubs
@Matt.E9480
@Matt.E9480 Ай бұрын
@@damonmlinaric9254 yep if all clubs were developing like the Panthers that would be great for the game. To do this they would need a catchment area and leagues club as big as the Riff. The single town teams should definitely be matching Panthers.

No they don't. They have the money to pay their kids to stay. There is no salary cap for juniors. All those gambling addicts pushing their pensions through the pokies are paying for those kids free rent and food outside the salary cap.

wouldn't be an issue if the NRL changed the rules back to when skill and endurance was priority for players. You bring back the limited interchange, 5 metre rule and suddenly islanders are no longer the dominant participants.

I think if anyone should be getting more salary cap space it should be the bottom 4 clubs because they need to attract star players to move up the ladder. Not many players want to move to a bottom 4 team, so bottom 4 teams end up paying overs for star players anyway

@organicod2438
@organicod2438 Ай бұрын
@@Paul-ik8fm Yes, of course, but he's complaining about the problems inherent to capitalism or a "free" market in a sport that essentially leveraged precisely that to garner the financial success it currently has over other sports within Australia. It's a stupid discussion to have because changing it now would require other clubs to essentially bankrupt themselves to invest in juniors that MIGHT pay dividends in 10 years time. They won't do that, or they would beg from the NRL who would essentially leverage the money from the big clubs who already invested in Juniors (and thus have an advantage) and this would basically even out any of the money "saved" by retaining juniors at a discount. Not only that, but it would require clubs to correctly identify talent sooner, which they clearly cannot do overly well, especially considering injuries and other poaching codes, etc. as well as the aforementioned "free market" capitalism that the NRL relies on. Once again, it is Captain Hindsight Gould telling people how he warned everyone ages ago, which we can't verify and we can't really change now, but it makes him look like some genius soothsayer. Typical Gus.
