My aim this year is to live on 1/3 of bring home pay (yes, a very low number); reinvest the rest in my home; and determine, what I MUST have to maintain a low standard of living. This will help me see if retirement could be doable in ‘26 (would have to purchase health insurance for at least 2 years). I am BEYOND ready for my time to be my own.

That wouldn't pay for my necessary expenses. My goal is to document my spending and debt repayment to hope to retire in 2026 too.
@GGsGarden15 күн бұрын
@@lindas9806 I cleared debt in 2024 so this is an experiment to see if it is doable. It is likely that it will not be. Like you, I am documenting (and categorizing) expenses. I am splitting expenses out to track taxes and fees separately. This is a real pain. I’ve had to research several things to find out the break down of use/taxes/fees because it seems it is okay to just bill a total amount. But, it will help curtail any “on a whim” purchases because when I think about the pain of tracking, I will likely just say it’s not worth it.

One thing I would suggest is find a health insurance broker.. I don't know how you do it from scratch ask friends who have retired early, that's how we learned about ours. My husband passed away 2 years ago at age 64 and I decided to stay our of the rat race and took Widows Survivors at age 60 1/2. My health insurance is $180 a month through Marketplace. I am not eligible for Medicaid due to making to much money and assets I am o.k. with that I am debt free. Anyways just a suggestion and unfortunately just like all insurances it does go up each year, my broker researches the lowest prices each year for me last year it was $102 a month now $180 it does include dental and eye care. A financial strategy no Prepper channel ever talks about. Be genuinely born again (repentance toward God and family toward our Lord Jesus Christ), tithe (10% of gross income to a real Bible believing New Testament church) and give (separate and in addition to the tithe) to gospel ministries. God is faithful to those who obey him-actually DO what He says. That is real faith-trusting Him when it is hard to do. He will show Himself faithful and He will take care of you as His beloved child. @@johndorney3269 What's wrong with not having a TV, washer/dryer, microwave, dishwasher? I don't have 4 out of the 5 you mentioned. I do the TV(cut the cable cord 3 yrs ago) for "noise" when I go to bed for the night.

If you have a fairly large emergency fund and don't have it in short-term CDs, it means when you get the CDs, you are really gaining double because you are negating your losses. We have some cash on hand, some emergency fund in CD ladders, multiple short-term cds with different maturity times. So if we need money, we are not taking a penalty on everything.

My CD is arranged so that if I have to make a withdrawal I only pay a penalty on the amount I withdraw. Unfortunately interest rates have gone down since the last maturity so the income has been reduced, but still glad I have money earning me money instead of costing me money.

I was a teacher, I tried to teach kids this stuff basically bc no one taught me and I thought, we are being taken advantage of, everyone is learning on their own experience and are usually 40 before they understand the system. They are losing a lot of money during those years.

My degree is in finance. When I did my capstone paper for graduation (a couple decades ago), I chose to compare and contrast 3 pharmaceutical companies. I looked at their past performance, and made predictions of their future performance based on their current, at the time, R&D and products in the testing pipeline. I wish I coulda, woulda, shoulda...one,had the money and two, trusted my analysis. Two have actually out performed my prediction. Oh well, 20/20 hindsight.

Just like prepping, investing has its own very beneficial vocabulary.Take the time and do your homework.Know the difference between a finance charge and compounding interest, capital gains,short term and long term,an accidentally high yield dividend.That's just a few to get you started.Also once you learn teach your kids and grand kids

I started a 12 month CD Ladder back in 2023, and have that money rolling over when they reach maturity. I'm going to transfer that money into a HIMMA once interest rates drop to garbage rates like 1 - 2 %. That way, I can still have quick access to my money without having it locked up, in the event I need it in a pinch.

What about starting a small business that isnt high labor. Something that can be done at hime. Look at your states cottage law's. Learn how to make pastries and sell them locally and hit the farmers markets that are close by. Make soaps, or candles, or jams and jellies. Any of these things require low labor, inexpensive to start, and can easily bring in an extra 4 or 5 hundred a month. Crafting and hand made products are sought after and the community loves to support these things. Just my humble opinion on something easy to learn that can help bring in a few hundred extra every month.

IF people are willing to buy it, yes. Where I'm from, there's a wee bit of a market for it. But where I am now? Nope. People would much rather go into town and buy from big stores or go online. It's so frustrating.

Once O toner of 2024, I have not been able to pay off my charge card at the end of the month. I used to be able to pay off what I charge on it, but now I cannot. I am on Social Security, so fixed income. Unfortunately, prices have gone up and Social Security hasn’t gone up as fast as prices.

Thank you for this topic, your advice is very helpful! A few years ago I found a brokerage house with no fees and started investing very small amounts and reinvesting dividends. Was chasing dividends for extra income when I retired but bought what I knew. Thanks for putting list together for us.
