What I like about this channel and what separates it from others is the fact that he doesn't pause the song allowing him to get the full vibe of the song before commenting. That alone was proof enough for me to subscribe and enjoy not only the song(s) but his feedback as well. I suppose his musical background doesn't hurt either in terms of his reactions. This was a one-of-a-kind recording. I remember back in the day when I heard this I thought, "how did they make this sound." They literally recorded the vocals over and over, bouncing the tracks (on tape before digital even existed) until they had dozens of overlays perfectly blended. it's a masterpiece that they could never again equal. As for no one doing anything like this now, you might check out some of Jacob Collier's deeper cuts. That guy is simply a genius and has done some things reminiscent of this sound. Absolutely, It was groundbreaking!! They were the first to do it (way before the technology that makes it easier to do today). Soon after Queen took note, as well as Billy Joel and others, incorporating what they learned from 10CC's production methods, for some of their recordings.

If you're interested in a different sound from 10cc, hope you'll listen to "Art For Art's Sake" and "Good Morning, Judge", along with plenty of others that are wisely suggested in the other comments. Mid-way through the 1970s, the band broke in half, and Kevin Godley and Lol Creme became their own thing, as both musicians and video directors (creating and directing song videos for the likes of Duran Duran and others). 10cc was yet another band that had members who had attended art school, like The Beatles, The Who, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Queen, Roxy Music, The Clash, Talking Heads, etc. By the way, this is a band from Manchester, and very different from the bands that emerged from that city about a decade later in the next generation, in the punk and post-punk scenes (Buzzcocks, Magazine, Joy Division/New Order, etc, and then The Smiths) and others have followed, like Oasis.

I recently saw the video of how they recorded this song. They used a mellotron for the background voices and on a whim, asked the secretary who worked at the studio to do the voice over of "big boys don't cry". The 70's was definitely the decade of the love song/ ballad writers. I was born in 65' but was raised by my grandparents and was heavily influenced by an older generation in terms of music and entertainers. The 70's was a great time for a kid growing up musically. We heard 50's, 60's and the then current artists. A lot of the younger generation today seem to only be aware of what's current and have no idea that music actually existed before they were born..lol. It's gotten so bad that in some of the reaction videos I've seen, they can't even name an instrument that's being played except for the drums. However, I remain hopeful and am glad that they've finally taken an interest with an open mind.

From what they say in the documentary piece, they didn't use mellotron for the voices. Those are magnetic tape loops - recordings looped and re-recorded of the voices of the members of the band. @@parissimons6385 Thank you for the correction. I know that a mellotron works with taped loops and is why it was the first thing that came to mind when describing the background vocals. Either way, it was very ingenious for the band to incorporate a similar process to create such a unique sound. Thank you again.

Yes, it was multiple overdubed tape loops each of a different note in the scale. They fed it through the mixing desk with each member of the band controlling a series of mixers. They the 'played' the desk like a keyboard bringing different notes in and out the create the ethereal chords made up entirely of voices. 10cc where a very clever and inventive group. There are a some interesting documentaries on them out there.

I certainly don't mind your revisiting these beautiful classic songs . I love this song, it is so ethereal and beautiful. What Dee is describing sounds exactly like what my friends did back in early 70's. Get stoned, then lay back and listen to music like this or Pink Floyd or ELP an chill while the room went round and round !! LOL! Not that I'm advocating that ,I haven't done anything like that in 40+ years, but I sure don't regret those days either - happy memories. A friend of mine in Europe was lucky enough to see 10cc in concert, I believe this past summer. He said they were still wonderful and played this song. It's nice to hear they are still out there.

It was a hopeful, happy time for some of us and it is reflected in our music. Sadly we also had Viet Nam and civil rights struggles, which was also reflected in our music. Times have changed, and that is reflected in todays music, also.

The most interesting fact about this song was how the song was recorded. The synth sound you hear was actually made from thousands of vocal tracks that were overlapped rather than a synthesizer, which didn't yet exist. There are video which discuss this innovation.

When this tune came out , a great deal was made of the non existing studio effects created for the recording at the time. But there is a more recent years live recording available currently on YT which is a astonishingly excellent production. Search for it. You'll love it.

It was fun to see you get the joy of sharing with your wife. It's the same joy requestors get when you react to their favorite. I don't listen to a lot of "today's music" so I can't really say if you're correct, but the depth today seems to be lacking. The writer of this was understanding that he would have to portray a false front to the listener, and the listener would have to comprehend the title and chorus were a lie the guy was telling himself. As @djfrank68 commented below, you really should watch "The Making of I'm Not In Love". It's less than 15 minutes long, but mind-blowing as far as what they did to get the sounds you hear throughout. It's basically all of their voices recorded as "ahs" in every key that equated to several hundred tones (or something like that; I don't remember exactly). Just watch it!

The way they created this is a story in itself. All members sang the aaas on multiple tracks in different keys. They then constructed the backing harmonies by playing the tracks on mixing board by opening up the volume gliders, all four members hands on deck.

Chod, if you like 10cc you should also listen to Godley & Creme. 10cc was originally a four-piece: Stewart, Gouldman, Godley, and Creme. Godley & Creme split from the band and put out some more experimental music as well as becoming top video producers. Their song "Cry" became a big hit, and quite a few of their other songs a worth a dig too ("Under Your Thumb", for one).
