Their voice recordings on this song is legendary. From what I read “Stewart spent three weeks recording Gouldman, Godley and Creme singing "ahhh" 16 times for each note of the chromatic scale, building up a "choir" of 48 voices for each note of the scale. “. Crazy with the technology of the70s!😎😎

Those voice sounds were made, as far as I can remember, by taping people singing one note. 24 of them, spanning 2 octaves. Each tape was hand spliced into a loop and each run through one track of a 24 track mixing desk. Then they flipped the volume up and down depending on which note they needed. Basically they turned a full-size studio mixing desk into a mellotron. 1975 technology, baby. All analog. You could do it digitally now in about 5 minutes on protools, but it would sound nowhere near as moving. This song was voted best single of the past 25 years in the UK at the time. Then, later that year, Bohemian Rhapsody was released.

This was quite unique in the history of recording music. They created an instrument specially for it and then destroyed it afterward. It consisted of multiple tape loops that could be played like an instrument. Then they spent 3 weeks recording voices - over 600 in all - to deal with all the keys etc. The result was this oceanic sound that nobody has ever heard since. The girl in the middle was the receptionist in the studio.

It's human psychology 101....he's denying he's in love so that he can avoid heartache in the future....but it's clearly already too late for that! It's the illusion that we have any control over our romantic inclinations. So true! Painfully true, as this song shows. It was nice to see how much of an impression this song made on you, Wilbur.

You are, absolutely, correct. An utter masterpiece. ...NOT that 10cc aren't wonderful, but nothing else they (or anyone else!) ever did approaches the masterwork that this is (Everyone should watch "making-of docs. on this. It is complex, beautiful and stunning!)!!!!! It is true that, in some ways, one cannot tell whether this is a song of "ultimate denial" (Saying "I'm not!" when/because one iS!) or the most arrogant bastard in existence! 😂🤣 ...However: I, always, read it as the former ...and, over-the-years, the main composer [Eric Stewart] has told the story that it is based, really on a conversation/exchange with his wife ...asking him why he didn't say "I Love you" very often/more often. ...and his idea that: saying something like that, constantly, would degrade the meaning and impact of the words, over time. ...Resulting in: a horrible outcome, in-the-end! This song is how he chose to illustrate that. The oddest thing is that: it is NOT *he* who made the song what it is (he had written it as a "pseudo-bossa nova" or something ...! 🙄🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️) ...but ...o.k.: there are, really: TWO 10ccs First: from about 1972-1976: The "Godley & Creme" version [THIS one] (Featuring BOTH song-writing pairs, though: Kevin Godley & Lol Creme as-well-as: Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman)and the post-1976/'77 version, which was all: Stewart & Gouldman. Stewart & Gouldman are the more pop-oriented, hit-oriented, easy-to-swallow writers. Godley & Creme were, always, the more experimental and adventurous ones. It was Godley & Creme who came-up with the idea to record this song as all (mainly) voices (There are some keyboards and strings used, but the majority of the sounds you hear are vocals! ...Either direct or processed. That's right!!!! - and this is WELL before "sampling" of ANY sort existed! -- Tape loops were a brand new thing, then!!!!! (No joke!)!). Godley & Creme departed in 1976, leaving Stewart and Gouldman to manage 10cc from that point forward. The songs, while they don't "suck" or anything, take on a much more "standard," "radio-friendly profile" ...as does the album engineering. ...And that is ALL fine! ...sometimes you're, just, looking for, exactly, that. (But, to me: Stewart and Gouldman's work was rarely, if ever, as interesting as Godley & Creme's or some combo. of the two pairs! 🤘🤘) 👍) Godley & Creme did albums as a duo and had another major hit in ...I think it was '86 ?? (maybe '85 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ ...I don't recall, exactly. ...But within that window (mid-late '80s)), The song "Cry" ...although, THAT, I believe, was more well-recognized for the video they made for it; which was ground-breaking, at-the-time! Godley & Creme had started working as a team creating videos, prior to that, already and that was the majority of their career then (in the early days of video!) They created NUMEROUS well-known and much-awarded videos (Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" is one which comes to mind. ...There are, like 50 more, I would say!). All I can say is: THIS WAS THE '70s! 💙⚡⚡⚡⚡🤘🤘🤘🤘 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Yup, they were smart, witty, great musicians and stunning producers. Made you laugh, cry, gasp and swoon and they could also rock out.............some of the cleverest music and lyrics ever written particularly on the earlier albums when Godley and Creme were still part of the band.

Hi, Guy! This song was such a monster smash back in the day, that the BBC did a documentary on it entitled "The Making of I'm Not In Love, By 10cc"! You need to pull that up, then you'll really appreciate the love that was poured into this song! God Bless!... Did you catch the heart beat at the end?.....beat that!!!

Eric Stewart wrote this song after his wife told him he didn't tell her he loved her enough. Sort of a tongue in cheek response. His vocals are great. Sadly, he was seriously hurt in a car wreck and does not appear any more.

This band you could really dig deep into their catalogue if you wanted to. Another well known song from them is Dreadlock Holiday. But a lot of the stuff people don't know from them are actually perhaps more impressive in their own way. The band loves to use humour and wit in the lyrics and songwriting with great variety. Would recommend giving songs like "The Wall Street Shuffle", "Art for Art's Sake", "I Wanna Rule The World" and "Somewhere in Hollywood", "Don't Hang Up" a go.

I was 9 when this was released but every time I hear it I'm transported back to a farmers field in St Ives Cornwall in 1983 when I saw 10cc perform this classic. Wilburn, you need to watch this ---> kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaDblmejodiEpdU to see how a 4 piece band ended up with 624 backing vocals for that "Ahhhhhhhh" sound.

Check out the video to Godley and Creme's "Cry." Kevin Godley and Lol Creme were half of 10CC, and went on to produce a boatload of videos for many of the bands that were staples on early MTV (you know, when they played music videos). "Cry" use of cross fading displays an analog hint at the digital morphing that would follow. Very innovative. Also, Rachel Yamagata does a great cover of "I'm Not In Love."

Back then, the singers and the band were raw, no special effects to make it sound studio-like and no one cared if it wasn’t perfect. They delivered from their hearts and souls💕🔥

You should also give the music video a watch. Musically, it's a worse radio edit. However, the music video gives out a MAJOR hint about the song's bridge where you hear the woman's vocals say "Be quiet, big boys don't cry". Without the video, you're left wondering who's saying that. Is it the girl he's in love with? Or some other woman like his mom? But in the music video, it's the singer that mouths those words. So the music video implies that he's remembering someone telling him this; and it's probably when he was a little boy from the tone of voice the woman uses.

Somebody phone him up to see if he's okay...I love your heart, Wilburn, more than I can say. He's sick in love, and too messed to just get there. I love the minor magic of this tune and the guile of a man saying he is so above it all in his lyrics----when every listener is hip to his already too late state of mind.

The song was recorded in a special technique, invented by Sennheiser, dummy head stereophony. if you hear it with an open or half-open headphone, the woman's voice whispers in your left ear . Sennheiser use it to promote this technique

Look up where those dreamy sounds are coming from. All the members reccorded each of the 12 notes in the harmonic scale as long as they could hold it. Then those were multi layered to as many tracks as the 4 track could hold. Then, they were played back continuously on 12 ft tape loops each running forever through its own sound board channel. Basically in the days before midi and samples they turned the studio console itself into an instrument.
