And as the head of the household, he bears at least some responsibility for her attitude if he's been tolerating it. But a disrespectful wife is not typically a faithful wife. Is this relationship going anywhere, or is it stuck in perpetual fear alley from which there's no escape for either of you unless you both get amnesia? Once you cross the fear barrier in a relationship, it's eternal misery or divorce. Marriage is built on freedom and trust and both of those die once you cross the barrier.

Neither one of you is supposed to be particularly free from the other, but that's the point: two lives bound together through thick and thin. If you want to be completely free, don't get married. But you are right about "trust." The problem is that the trust was broken in this scenario. The problem, I think, is that you don't think people change. That's not true. People change all the time, slowly but surely. And so the fear I propose is meant to correct, not just to make her stew. If she genuinely thinks he might leave because of that kind of behavior, assuming she actually gives a crap, it will force her to reevaluate. No one should ever fall into the trap of taking their spouse for granted. The goal here is to see her amend her behavior and come to realize how much she appreciates her husband, because she should. The doghouse is temporary. But, of course, he also needs to know if she DOESN'T give a crap; if that's the case, then the marriage is pretty much doomed no matter what and it may be time to rip off the band-aid.
