Know I'm late to the party here but by watching the music video you miss seeing Billy do something that to me is just awesome. Now don't get me wrong I've always really enjoyed watching his music videos, however there is wonderful concert footage of him doing this song where he's playing both the piano and a harmonica simultaneously. Yes the harmonica is in a holder. Still it's just freaking amazing to watch him play both parts at the same time. Anyway nice vid, keep having Wifey on and that little girl is just adorable. Loved seeing her wide eyed wonder at everything in the room. So sweet. 😊

Piano bars were actually a thing. Most times, with a solo performer where there were bar stools placed around the piano to sit. Some high-end hotels had rooms where they brought in quartets. As young adults, we always got fully dressed up and felt like big shots going to those places. We had many first dates in those types of places to impress the lady.

I was at the Billy Joel and Elton John concert in 1994 at giant's stadium in NJ. 76,000 people in the stands and 20,000 people on the field singing Piano Man. It was truly incredible.

Billy Joel is such an amazing performer. He never sells the front row or the front two rows at his concerts. He has his road crew take tickets and go find people in the nosebleeds and bring them up. He got so tired of watching rich people in the front row not caring about the concert just there to impress someone so he wanted to see his actual fans. This song is based on a real place. Early in his career he was trying to get out of a crappy contract (his previous label didn’t promote his album “Cold Spring Harbor” properly) and his manager had him hide out in Los Angeles. He was playing in a piano bar under Bill Martin (real name William Martin Joel) because he couldn’t use his common name due to the contract issue and his label would’ve found him performing. The waitress in this song was his first wife and she waited on tables and he sang at the piano to cover bills until his contract was terminated. Every person he mentions was based on what he saw in while playing the piano. Another one of his songs you should check out especially to promote mental health awareness is his song “You’re Only Human (Second Wind)”. He wrote it based on his issues he had. 11:46 one of our local Indian casinos have a piano bar in their casino.
