Update: I've made the UPS according to this this specs. HOWEVER, I NOTED THE BMS DOES NOT FULLY CHARGE THE BATTERIES EVEN WHEN THE INPUT VOLTAGE IS SET AT 12.7V. I've tested this multiple times with 2 routers. Router 1: a 12V 0.5A which lasted 2.5 hours with 6 1800mAh cells - (2 sets of 3 cells connected in series)(this was with the battery's first charge/manifacture's charge) after the batteries were fully drained, recharges the pack through the BMS with a power adapter. The charge lasted only 45 min. The 3 cells were at different voltages after the BMS cut off the supply to the router. Initially charged it with a 12V 1A supply and thought the input current was not sufficient, therefore charged it with 12V 2A supply. Still got around 45 min or less. So to double check, I've charged the same batteries with a 18650 battery charger. Inserted the batteries to the UPS and tried it with a 12V 1A router. The UPS lasted 3 hours and 34 min. This was just with 3 18650 1800mAh cells. I've concluded that it's better to use individual BMS's to charge each cell to get the full potential. Hope this will help anyone who is planning to build this UPS

Was facing similar kind of issue.. finally found that there was no proper contact even after soldering. Checked with multimeter. Happens sometimes in case of li ion battery soldering
@pankajubhale4161
@pankajubhale4161 2 жыл бұрын
I faced the same issue too, if we use the same adapter 12v 2 A, the voltage dropped 0.6v at input due to input diode, hence it is 11.4 v to bms, bms needs voltage range atleast 12.6v so that each battery charged with 4.2v which is optimal. Bms has property to shut down output power when battery voltage decreases to 9v. Hence we get less backup due to battery voltage range 9v to 11.4v. hence it is necessary to have 12.6v alteast to input of bms. If we remove input diode then again there is issue that input led light and indicator light of adapter become ON even there is no input power supply because battery is used by them in abscence of diode. Solutions is to have 13v customised input adapter to power the ups with input diode of 3 A if your router works at 2A. I tried i got best results in back up, atleast 2.5 hrs with 2 A router with three 18650 batteries.

You kiddin me? You cant get 3 hours of backup just with 3, 1800maH batteries in series, the voltage will increase to around 12V, but the capacity will remain 1800maH.. If You're using just one 12V 1A Router, that's 12watts per hour, You should expect to get no more than 45 mnts (in fact around 30mnts) How did you get 3+ hours!

The problem with this method is.. Battery is only charged to 70-80%.. Because 12 adaptor outputs about 11.7-11.9 v at most so 11.7/3 =3.9v per cell... But li ion can be charged to 4.2v per cell.. So.. Yeah.. I am using 2s 3p configuration with relay.. But sometimes there is rebooting even if caps are used..
@shubhamsawant5129
@shubhamsawant5129 2 жыл бұрын
The diode with drop 0.6v from adapter so adapter will actually supply 11.4v to router. The boost converter is set to 12v so it will always draw from boost module and not adapter. To use adapter module voltage must be 11.3v or less which may cause problem sometimes in router function. You need a relay switch over circuit to remove diodes Edit: I made it using 4 Li ion battery (2600 mah) it gives me 6 hrs of backup for my Airtel 5g xtreme router Now I used 8 batteries and backup is almost 11 hours.. (enough for my work from home😌)

@diy community The main flaw in this circuit is charging the battery after a discharge cycle. Because 3s lithium battery has a full charge voltage of 12.6v but router adapter has a close circuit voltage of 11.8v or below if that's a low amp adapter. That can never charge your battery fully and the battery will have half of its rated capacity while it backs up power.. I watched many people post video about router ups but very few of them address this issue in their design.

@CancunManny
@CancunManny 5 ай бұрын
I learned how to make UPS watching youtube videos, and now I come to find out many of these videos are WRONG. His whole setup seems to be wrong. Like you mentioned the boost converter is attached to the "steady" 12v already coming in. Also he doesn't have 12.6 V which is needed to properly charge the batteries. Understandable, but I haven't yet found a good electronics forum where real experts can share info. The forums I post on I usually get told my project is all wrong, but they don't give me details on exactly what I should use.

@@CancunMannyNah don't worry it can work you just need to remove the directly connected battery positive to the output and use like a 13 volt 3 ampere adaptor that's how I made my ups and the BMS will handle 1 or 2 extra volt just fine I think 🤔
@CancunManny
@CancunManny 5 ай бұрын
@@mohitkoli7097 I am no expert by any means, but the so called experts at different electronics forums say a BMS is not a Li Ion charging circuit. It seems to safely charge a 3S battery pack you need a charging circuit to provide CV (constant volts at 12.6) and a CC (Constant Current), you also need a BMS. I want to emphasize I am not an expert! I've seen videos on YT where it shows BMS working correctly even when you use an extra or two volts. If i am understanding correctly many set ups will "work", but not work correctly. This means you could kill your battery much faster than expected or worse yet have it explode and cause a fire.

@@CancunManny Nah I don't worry it will work just fine just fine with the instructions I gave above ☝️ I get what you're trying to say it is safer to charge it that way👍 I'm just saying it's a DIY project you can do it and learn from it :-) its just for fun it doesn't need to be that exact voltage it is flexible it can charge at 13 or even higher volt I charge my 3S pack with 15 volt for like 3 years and it works just fine 🫠 whoever reading this please charge it 12.6 volts, it work for me but it can't work for everybody Maybe you have a different BMS which exactly needs the 12.6 volt so just to be safe 🙂 and yes set the voltage on the boost or buck converter to 12 or 12.1 volt and check the positive and negative wire ( or else you will get I fullyy cooked to perfection🎇🔥👾{ router☠️} ) If you do all the things correctly you got a working Mini UPS 😊

@CancunManny
@CancunManny 5 ай бұрын
BMS don't have a constant current or constant voltage as output. When batteries fully charged it should output 12.6v, as batteries start to go low, voltage will get closer to 9v before BMS shuts off. The boost converter is used to keep the output steady at 12v. In fact I think the booster he is using has a different name. Step down gets you from higher V to lower Vs, Step up gets you from lower Vs to higher vs, then there is a 3rd type that keeps output Vs steady even if you supply more or less Vs. In this example, when batteries fully charged output should be 12.6v, but if you only need 12v you need to step down from 12.6 to 12v. But when batteries go under 4v each, then you need to step up to 12v.

Hi, The changes i explained for few members is to isolate the battery line with backup line. And even without this is should work in same way. If you are using this ups for a 12v router and getting a lesser backup then you can remove the boost converter and try running it directly with battery bms. By doing this we can detect any problems with boost converter or bms. In Most cases if the boost converter is not capable of delivering a constant current then BMS gets into sleep mode. I assume your setup is also having similar issue. Try the above changes and let me know.

I am finding it difficult to understand the purpose of the switch. If the switch is in the off position, the UPS battery will be powering the router, all the time, if it is in the on postition then the router will be powered by the input from the UPS power supply. Surely the whole point of the UPS is to keep the router working incase of a power outage. Therefore why not do away with the switch. Your thoughts please.

By adding a bypass on the ups how would it then switch over to use the battery if the power goes out. You see here in South Africa we have a thing called loadshedding ,its where the Government switches our electricity off for a few hours a day and this happens 2 to 3 times a day sometimes more depending what stage we are on.

does 12v source sufficient to charge the battery through BMS? Shouldn't it need higher voltage to charge the lithium battery rather than just 12v? (don't you need another xl6009 from 12v input to BMS with xl6009 out voltage set to ..say 13.5 v?)

BMS balances all the cells and it protect from over change and low discharge. I recommend you to add a BMS. To improve charging use a higher ampere charger than what you use currently. Hi, with Three 2500mah batteries in series can give upto 2hrs of backup. The above said can be achieved only with original batteries. As you said if there are frequent power cut the batteries may not charge full to survive for another power cut. u r right but 12.6 adapter is hard to find or take more cost

@@samtiny6332 use 12V 2/3/4/5A smps or LED drivers which r abundantly available. They have trimmer to adjust from ~10v-14v. Otherwise u can change the biasing resistor of existing 12v adapter for +/-1v safely, there's many utube guide vdos. But then again, opening a sealed shut adapter will be destructive.

Add 1k ohm for led. I did not had 1k so used an extra to match the value.

Hi, Yes you can use 20A BMS and no alterations required. In future if you want you can add more batteries upto 20A.

XL6009 will reduce the back-up time. I hope we can avoid using it. What do you think. What will happen if we dont use XL6009. Is it neccessary ? what about diodes, do we need to use diode in the input of 12 V adapter and also in the input of the XL6009 pcb ? Why is it required ? Pl reply

I made a mini router ups using your video But i am facing an issue Whenever i plug out the adapter from the ups in running state The whole circuit went off and showing 0 voltage in meter until i switch the power button off and on What should be the reason I am using 3 set of 10000 mah power bank battery means i have 10 ampere so which diode should i use. I am using 3s 20A bms for this 30000 mah battery

Hi, i recommend you to check the connections. Remove the bypass line and check whether ups is on all times. Also if you are using old cells there are chances of any faulty cells in you ups so find that and replace. Because of this BMS may get into sleep mode. And you can use a 2A schottky diode in input which has high voltage and current carrying capacity.

Hi, you can google for Roofers make lithium ion batteries and buy as per the capacity you are planning. Booster ckt ? You mean boost converter ? If so you can but that also online. Search for XL6009 boost converter.

I have reused cells from old laptop battery. 3 cells in series x 3, each is of 2600mah. Again as they are old their capacity might have reduced. New batteries should give more backup and longer life.
