@@summerspook You'll just make yourself a target for infantry anti-tank shaped-charge rockets. One hit from one of those on the upper front plate of an Abrams from the second floor of a building and you're toast. Even from front-dead-centre, the rocket will either penetrate the upper front plate (only 30mm thick on older Abrams, and still only ~50mm on newer models) or glance off, straight into the turret ring, killing a number of crewmembers and disabling the turret.

@Dullahan2 4 жыл бұрын
@@Jupiter__001_ This is incorrect. Although the armor is "only" 30mm-50mm thick, the composite material provides the chemical protection of up to hundreds of millimeters of steel armor. The angle of the armor from ground level will only add to the thickness of the armor. If they do hit the top of the turret from above though, where armor is the most thin, spall would be flung into the crew compartment.

North Korea is generally safe if you don't talk politics, and a comically heavy handed government is pretty much the only threat to your safety there. their government wants that tourism money so they make sure you can go there and spend it. mogadishu however, is not the capital of a totalitarian state that wants you to spend money. it is the capital of a failing state that literally cannot police the streets directly outside their own capitol building, and they cannot make ANY guarantee of your safety regardless of your political views.

It is probably still profoundly unsafe even for a young, fit, adult male who looks Somali and speaks like a local - the "constant gunfire and frequent explosions" described aren't all, or even _mostly,_ aimed at foreign visitors. Consider that all those warlords, militant groups, and terrorists have to do _something_ on the 351 days of the year when they aren't attacking foreigners (or businesses which cater to foreigners), and that something is mostly "try to rob and/or murder their neighbors."

Went once in 2012 as a 9 year old (at time of visiting) male who looks Somali. I didn’t experience consistent gunfire, but there still was some. Wasn’t specifically targeted at me, but to be honest it wasn’t worth the visit either. I still agree though Toycat would be a dead man walking if he was to visit.

Occasionally it would be suggested that there would someday be an opportunity to host the Winter Olympics in that region. Given that Srinagar is a bit higher than Salt Lake City, and at a very similar altitude to that of Denver, and that the nearby ranges both to the east and west of Srinagar similar in altitude to, respectively, the Wasatch and to the Front Range of the Rockies, it makes good sense that they would provide similar quality snow. I'd like to know the reality compared to the dire warnings, so I want someone trustworthy to go and report back purely for my own entertainment. Thank you for the Wikitravel tip. Trip Advisor looks a lot like Yelp these days, I wanted something less fake.

The key issue is looking European/American or East Asian there basically paints big money signs on your back, because being a (non-African) foreigner there means you are fabulously wealthy in comparison. Combine that with almost zero law-enforcement it means that you can either be murdered for your possessions or held for ransom and pretty much ANY person there will at least consider it if they see you alone. Like, even otherwise-nice people will at least have the thought in their head because robbery/piracy/kidnapping is the ONLY form of socioeconomic mobility there for most people. So, traveling alone there is not necessarily certain death, but it's at least certain that very bad stuff will happen to you.

Yeah, it’s not completely hostile to all human life. It’s just extremely hostile to tourists due to crime targeting them and if you don’t look Somali then anyone can tell you are a tourist.

While living in Sana’a, I met a British/American couple. They liked to visit dangerous places and she decided that for her 21st birthday they should go to Mogadishu. This was in the late 90s I think. Anyway, they were there for a day or so before she got kidnapped. She told me that it wasn’t that big a deal, they paid the ransom and they let her go. She had also been kidnapped in Colombia and she said that was far worse... Anyway, as far as fun things to buy you can also pay for a Somali passport. She thought that would be a cool souvenir. The person selling them saw her eagerness and said that for a little bit more you could get a diplomatic passport. Who could say no to that? It turns out having a Somali diplomatic passport can get you in trouble. In a subsequent adventure in Djibouti they had their belongings searched at a US military base. When the passport was found the interview went to a whole ‘nother level. The moral of the story is that the only westerners that go to Mogadishu are idiots. Don’t go.

Travelling to Somalia is suicidal. If you really want to experience that area, go to Somaliland. If you do go to Somaliland, don't let it be known before you travel. You will get death threats and the nastiest messages you could imagine by people who mostly aren't even Somali.

It’s called the white Pearl because that was the nickname before the civil war. In the 1960s 70s and early 80s Somalia was one of the most stable and safe places to visit and live in, in the continent. The white pearl name came from the fact that the capital Mogadishu was a city filled with white buildings and had really nice beaches.

Going to Somalia isn’t some exciting opportunity to go to a war torn country and to be some cool risk taker and marvel at the fact that they have electricity and running water. Those flights are great for people in the Somali diaspora who had to flee the only home they had ever known and reconnect with their family and their homeland. The people in Mogadishu have been trying to rebuild their city in the midst of political unrest, constant threat of terror and poverty. They don’t need your approval of ‘wow they have fast food places and a conference hall’.
