North Korea is generally safe if you don't talk politics, and a comically heavy handed government is pretty much the only threat to your safety there. their government wants that tourism money so they make sure you can go there and spend it. mogadishu however, is not the capital of a totalitarian state that wants you to spend money. it is the capital of a failing state that literally cannot police the streets directly outside their own capitol building, and they cannot make ANY guarantee of your safety regardless of your political views.

Occasionally it would be suggested that there would someday be an opportunity to host the Winter Olympics in that region. Given that Srinagar is a bit higher than Salt Lake City, and at a very similar altitude to that of Denver, and that the nearby ranges both to the east and west of Srinagar similar in altitude to, respectively, the Wasatch and to the Front Range of the Rockies, it makes good sense that they would provide similar quality snow. The key issue is looking European/American or East Asian there basically paints big money signs on your back, because being a (non-African) foreigner there means you are fabulously wealthy in comparison. Combine that with almost zero law-enforcement it means that you can either be murdered for your possessions or held for ransom and pretty much ANY person there will at least consider it if they see you alone. Like, even otherwise-nice people will at least have the thought in their head because robbery/piracy/kidnapping is the ONLY form of socioeconomic mobility there for most people. So, traveling alone there is not necessarily certain death, but it's at least certain that very bad stuff will happen to you.

While living in Sana’a, I met a British/American couple. They liked to visit dangerous places and she decided that for her 21st birthday they should go to Mogadishu. This was in the late 90s I think. Anyway, they were there for a day or so before she got kidnapped. She told me that it wasn’t that big a deal, they paid the ransom and they let her go. She had also been kidnapped in Colombia and she said that was far worse... Anyway, as far as fun things to buy you can also pay for a Somali passport. She thought that would be a cool souvenir. The person selling them saw her eagerness and said that for a little bit more you could get a diplomatic passport. Who could say no to that? It turns out having a Somali diplomatic passport can get you in trouble. In a subsequent adventure in Djibouti they had their belongings searched at a US military base. When the passport was found the interview went to a whole ‘nother level. The moral of the story is that the only westerners that go to Mogadishu are idiots. Don’t go.
