Wild camp using food that I dehydrated in last two videos. Covers three meals all re-hydrated using small gas stove and pot cozy, and they tasted great!!

Class and this broadcast is extremely good for us to do proper home cooked meals of our own dehydrate process instead of eating expensive meals from companies that over charge for rubbish that leave us all still hungry and again thanks Patrick for giving us all an insight into doing our own meals that's going to fill our stomach and make us a lot more happier 😁👍

Enjoyed the follow up video and I can see the results were tasty and really home from home. Whilst the steak and onions would be great the dehydrated foods are good fun to experiment. I liked the soup and i'm sure lots of variations there. You have some great camp sites Patrick and I hope to fine a few. Enjoyed the views and the wildlife / photography too. Will be filming my first camp soon and have picked up a few tips from your videos. Yeah a lot of kit to carry when you have camera equipment so dehydrated food and sawyer filter will compensate. Watching your vids in reverse so it seems. Very interesting. I dehydrated a few things a while back and had similar successful results which surprised me. I havent watched your vids on making it your way yet so I'm enjoying waching these back to front so to speak. Amongst other things I tried dehydrating a tin of spam in the oven for a few hours and it came out like bacon bits / frazzles, very tasty and was a great addition to a soup I lashed up while out. Take Care. Onto the next. Cheers.

@patrickdickinson6492
@patrickdickinson6492 7 жыл бұрын
Hi alexander the camera I,ve used for most of my videos is a Sony Alpha A37 has a translucent mirror and takes great video, a lot of time I,ve just used the 18/55 kit lens, I also use a remote microphone which I can position near to myself to get better audio, also have camera set up on sturdy trypod. The set up works great but it weighs such a lot I,am still looking for alternatives but to get good video audio you have got to carry the gear. it would appear. Sometimes use mobile phone but audio and wind noise is a problem, but video clarity is pretty good so useful close up in tent or on calm day. still looking for perfect set up all the best Pat

Hi Gareth and Zoe I use a Sony A37 DSLR for most of my videos and like you noticed I have a remote microphone with wind sock sometimes mounted on camera itself or on a 6m extension lead when filming say sat outside tent.Camera is usually mounted on a tripod, give great audio and movie footage but its supposed to be lightweight camping and all this gear weighs a ton. I have started taking my Sony mobile useful for photos and some movie but get really bad wind noise so only use say in tent or on calm day. Still working on different set ups. All the best Pat

Hi Patrick how are you finding carrying the Hilleberg Soulo around is it heavy and does it take a lot of space in your backpack? I thinks it's around 2.2kg. I'm thinking of buying one but they are very expensive and needed to know of any weight issues. Thanks
@patrickdickinson6492
@patrickdickinson6492 7 жыл бұрын
Hi there, the Soulo tent suits me when I camp out Oct to April, there are lighter tents, like the Hilleberg Acto but not got the headroom or strength. In summer or when no rain then I would probably use a bivvy bag. but when I do use a tent in winter or windy condition then want something strong and prepared to carry extra weight of Soulo. If you are walking long way then Soulo maybe a bit heavy. Hope helpful Pat

Hi Nick,having tried various dehydrated packet meals in the past and always being disappointing, I thought i would try my own, they tasted great and filled me up and kept me warm ,so highly recommend doing them yourself, all the best Pat

Good film Pat. Still to try dehydrating for myself but probably a lot better than the US ration pack I tried. Also a lot better than a lot of the expensive outdoor meals for sale. Atb Ray.

Hi Ray definitely worth a try if you,ve already got a dehydrator, like anything it getting round to it always something else to do, took me a couple of years before I used it for proper meals and must say results were very good. Combine dehydrated food with water filter and you have saved a lot of weight. Thanks for watching Pat

Hi Tom, i try and not get them too dirty eat as much food off, sometimes wipe with bread then clean with little water and wash liquid and often use a bit of paper towel. i have seen people rehydrate food in bin liner, or in vacuum sealed bag so basically then no washing up which seems a good idea. Thanks for watching Pat

Hi there may have pressed wrong button,I first started by photocopying off my OS map the area I needed. I then purchased Memory Map off the Peak District and this let me print directly off the computer. Both methods worked well as had lightweight paper copy of area I wanted , did not matter if got damaged and could be discarded after use, hope this helps Pat

Hi Broddi, when I have made the dehydrated meals I put them in the freezer, and I understand they will keep 5 or 10 years, if not in a freezer probably a lot less. I tend to make a batch of meals and probably use them in a couple of years, taste just like the day I cooked them, thanks Pat

Great vid but maybe im missing something? Why dehydrate your food and then take along the same amount of water to rehydrate? There seems to be no saving on weight so why not just take non bagged up food?
@patrickdickinson6492
@patrickdickinson6492 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, probably did not make it clear in video, I also take with me a Sawyer mini water filter so at any convient stream or water source I filter my water so don,t have to carry any. Together with dehydrated food and water filter really cuts down on weight. Sometimes I have to get water early on just in case none available higher up in hills or at unknown area which means have to carry it which is a pain. all the best thanks Pat

Hi Andy the pot cozy is made out of Reflectix foil bubble wrap material and some foil sticky tape, I bought a 10 m x 600 roll so use different pots and other gear. I did get it of Amazon with free postage I think it is a US product and have seen it with massive postage so may have to shop around, Some places like backpacking light do a similar product I believe. Hi Tim yes it was great to talk to you, such a surprise, the water filter bag was made by Evernew, I found then on ebay,not exactly cheap at about £15 but that includes postage from Japan, I think I have the 1 liter size, but it does fit the sawyer filter. I made it to the Snake Inn for 11-55, just as he opened the pub, couple of pints of Moonshine, popular Sheffield real ale, then hard climb back up kinder northern edge and back to Edale. May bump into you again all the best Pat

Great vid Pat. Shame about that wind/been cooped up in tent in Summer. Nothing like a bivy or being under tarp with wide view :) Couple of tips for you Pat. 1) Cut a slit in the side of the cozy. That way you can pick pot up by handles and just drop it in, fold handles then put lid on. 2) An alternative to using pot to re-hydrate is simply making the vacuum pouch taller like a Mountain House etc pouch. Then just simply pot boiling water into bag, fold lid and place it in a cozy pouch. No washing up as pot only boils water and you just chuck bag into rubbish bag ;) Check out this video, great recipe and some nice tips for the pouches :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYaoY3ZrfqqMaaM

Hi Adam yep both good tips it was awkward putting hot pot into cozy and to use vacuum pouch to heat up and eat from good idea, I have tried eating straight from zip lock bag but bit fiddly with your own pouch can probably make opening to suit better Like I said it had been planned as a basic bivvy with lightweight food, water filter and lightweight pack but the wind just would not go away. Anyway now roasting in 28 - 30 degrees C so hopeful out in bivvy. Thanks for watching and for useful tips all the best Pat

In the old days people just took a can of baked beans and used a stick to eat it with. Part of the camping experience today is enjoying a good meal at the end of the day, cooking and eating it. In Patrick’s case also preparing it beforehand. To me seeing the self satisfied expression on Patrick’s face sitting against the wall with a coffee in hand and a full stomach says it all. I use my dehydrator for making beef jerky, sweet potato chips etc for ourselves and the dog. Don’t think my unit can handle liquid type meals.....wonder what I can improvise as a base with?? Another top video btw, so glad I found your channel Patrick and the Wiltshire Man...👍 Greetings from Downunder.
