THE CAIRNGORMS In terms of height, distances and the severe and changeable weather the Cairngorms are the most arduous area in the United Kingdom.The plateau area has a subarctic climate and the shattered terrain is more like the high ground in high-arctic Canada or northern Norway than anywhere in the Alps or Rockies. The weather often deteriorates rapidly with altitude so that, when there are moderate conditions 150 m below the plateau, the top can be stormy or misty and there can be icy or powdery snow. Even when no snow is falling the wind can whip up lying snow to produce white-out conditions for a few metres above the surface and snowdrifts can build up rapidly in sheltered places. Gravel can be blown through the air and walking can be impossible.

I'm not a camper, but i love these videos, great, 're the sleeping issues, you can go a couple of nights of poor, broken sleep, and survive no bother, I get an average 4 to 5 hours a night, Monday to Friday, then a good 7 to 8 hours at the weekend and I'm fine, it's,a true saying the older you get, the less sleep you need 😉👍

Great work mate. Ive just moved up to a northerly location in Scotland and the weather is frankly "Nordic". Beautiful languishing mild summers, but brutal winters. I cant imagine how bitter it must be up on the Cairngorms, exposed to the wind, in those temperatures. Plus you dont even get much daylight at this time of year. I have experienced one sudden weather change when I was out walking and it was unlike anything I had experienced before. It was a relatively pleasant day in November, then the sun went down, the wind changed direction, and we suddenly realised that this was the sort of conditions which are literally life threatening. You guys really have your operation nailed down.

Hello! 1) Brand new here-love your channel! 2) Had no idea about the severity of the climate you're camping in. 3) FYI only regarding screaming high winds & the Infrasounds they can create: I know YOU know far more about the Banshee than I do. You've probably heard of the Dylatov Pass Incident in 1959. I just finished a book today about it. The short version: The Banshee can be a hell of lot more realistic if & whenever the wind blows & the boulders/rocks/mountain are shaped the right way.... The Infrasounds created can give anyone an uncontrollably severe case of anxiety, panic & terror. In the Dylatov Pass 1959 case, it was bad enough to drive 9 seasoned winter hikers-campers out of their tent into the night-without boots or heavy clothing-to their deaths from hypothermia. Best wishes to you for safe travels! An American Midwesterner

Great stuff Eddie! The light on the snow at sunset, when it turns a sort of blue, is my favorite, and you captured it perfectly. You and Mark did terrific under those conditions. Getting out isn't about comfort but for me but it is always worth any suffering. I winter camped back in the 70's and that was with heavy wool blankets and a 4mil plastic cover, I made a backpack frame out of electrical conduit. My sister's and I camped in October 8 years ago and it got down to 24f but there was no wind, that 20mph wind you and Mark had was brutal! I've been using "Little Hotties", chemical hand warmers, for my camera batteries and they might be useful to you to have along, just in case. Stay safe!, Ossie

wow..a fantastic camp! so jealous, still waiting for the snow down here on dartmoor, wont be long i hope, really want to get into some proper winter camping.some questions i hope you dont mind..how do you keep yr feet warm and do you use any crampons/microspikes for this type of trip? look forward to yr next adventure...ATB WJ
@ScotsWildcamper5 жыл бұрын
Long thermal socks at night if you outside tent keep moving or at least your toes. I took spikes for this trip but didn't need them I was thinking of taking crampons and ice axe but thought they weren't required and I was right. You should have ice axe spikes and crampons as part of your winter mountain gear. Most of the time spikes and walking poles be enough although guidelines state always take ice axe and crampons. ATB.

There should only be 2 adverts per video as far as I know, of course they can do what they want. I pick a time for one and KZbin has one I don't study KZbin TBH so I could be wrong. ATB p.s. some youtubers put a lot of adverts in themselves I only add 1

You and Mark are made of iron. You really pushed past the limits of your gear on that trip. The look in your eyes after sundown sitting in that tent put the “Wild” in Wildcamper.
@ScotsWildcamper5 жыл бұрын
TBH Dan you couldn't sit out but it wasn't too bad in tent. It's when you take gloves off packing away and your hands are burning painfully after 10 seconds you realise just how bloody cold it is in that wind. Mark had a 1000 down bag I had a 650 but me down trousers and jacket on lol.

Is there any harm in boiling snow for hot water?
@ScotsWildcamper5 жыл бұрын
None as long as you put some water at the bottom of the pan... it could burn otherwise. I only took 1litre of water because of the snow it was so cold on the hands I couldn't be bothered to pick up snow. ATB

You need some kind of heating system even if it’s an electric blanket running of a small battery pack. 🥶
@gbwildlifeuk82694 жыл бұрын
WHAT! Electric blankets dont run off battery packs, especially small ones! A 1KW blanket would need 10 x 100amp batteries. Carry those up the mountain!

There have been a good number of fatalities over the years in the Cairngorms with people underestimating the severity of the weather conditions you can get there any time of the year. If you go into those hills poorly equipped, you can pay for it with your life.

Very true a young Royal Marine died where I was camping a few weeks after I was there several years ago. Correct gear and knowing when to stop/turn back are a minimum requirement .ATB.

This looks scary for me. I purchased a sleeping bag with a comfort rating of -15c as I thought that would be the most I'd need in the UK, that's been totally shattered by this video, especially as you had your "BIG" jacket on in the sleeping bag. I'd hate to the think what real winter in Scotland would be like for a southern softie like me.... Keep up the good work.
@ScotsWildcamper5 жыл бұрын
If it's a good bag - 15 be fine. I don't know your wild camping experience but sleeping bag just part of you sleep system. I had down jacket on because I don't usually zip bag up fully cause I move alot during night and don't find it comfortable. I did this night zip bag right up and it was fine. Unless you camping at The highest parts of Britain in winter your bag be fine. Scotland is alot harsher than England you'll be good for the lakes. ATB.

@@ScotsWildcamper thanks for the quick reply, I feel a lot more assured now. I do believe there is no such thing as overkill, but after watching this video, and numerous others of yours I was little worried I'd wasted £270 on a bag rather than splashing an extra £100 for another -7c...I'll mainly be doing Wales and definitely Scotland in the near future.
