The process of forging the blade, making wild Damascus steel. Used steel A 485 and W 110. Hardness after quenching - 62 units. by Rockwell.
Frequently Asked Questions: The billet is soaked in kerosene. This is necessary for good welding (forging) steel. I sprinkle flux (90% borax + 5% quartz sand + 5% charcoal powder) this is necessary for forging (forge) welding. The flux is fused with scale - the formed substance is sufficiently fluid and is easily displaced by deformation. In addition, the flux protects against oxygen and charcoal, carburizes the surface layer of metal - which lowers the welding temperature (if in brief). Don't bother, I think most of these commenters have never seen another bladesmith work. Dunking the billet in kerosene just creates a fire hazard, it does nothing for the steel. Also, this isn't bad work, but it's nothing special either.

im sure the exact formula for damascus steel has been lost with the late blacksmiths that used to forge it, no one knows how to make it 100%, but this guy did a pretty good job with this, looks freaking cool :D

iMuhammad Siam Not true. I am American but went to high school in India, Punjab for high school at a International academy. Our school knew a legitimate swords salesman that knew a village of elderly that had the pass down knowledge of their villages custom of making true Damascus steel. I have one rather large Damascus dagger. I know you're thinking right now "it was probably a rip off". I can assure you. If it were, out school would habe never invited them back as our principal was a weapon enthusiast and knew all about blacksmithing, blades, spears, etc from all ages of history. Point being. There are some (not many) that do know 90-95%of the true art of forging Damascus steel.

@@sugoiharris1348 I can see it being a joke, and I can see it 'seeming' fine, even being fine. However, it creates or is at least likely to create two problems with the same net effect. The first is called an 'inclusion', usually that's caused by a bit of coal or forge scale sticking to the steel and getting fold inside, as you probably guessed, you've included something foreign, in this case a small amount of carbon. While steel contains carbon already it's an admixture, not a solid pocket of it. The second problem is that the pepper burning will create a void inside the steel where it doesn't weld. This cab cause the weld to come apart, that's called 'delamination'. Either way, it's a weak point in the knife. That can cause it to break which is not only undesirable, as any manufacturing defect is, but when a knife breaks it's when you're using it. A sharp piece of metal is now going... somewhere. Maybe on the floor, maybe into your arm or throat. It's very dangerous. So, maybe it was a joke. Maybe he didn't mind throwing away the material. I sure hope he didn't sell it.

Yeah it's nuts.. that's one of the "eyeball" tricks of the trade.. gotta "see" how much is going to be lost so you don't cut yourself short... most my scrap is billets I kept beating on and ended up to small for what I was trying to accomplish ...

To be fair, gloves are usually bad in these environments. If you touch a piece of metal and realize it's hot, without gloves you may still get some burns, but with gloves that aren't designed for blacksmithing, even when you let go of the burning hot metal, that glove will now be the thing burning your hand

Спасибо, принципиально нет разницы как резать, просто японцы сталь таким способом рафинируют и избавляются от непроваров. Тянут как бы в разные стороны. Если тянуть в одну то непровар только увеличится. В моём же случае это не имеет смысла, изначально сталь качественная.

shurap так это понятно....более того они перегибаниями формируют рисунок стали 1 бруска, в котором % углерода един, у вас же в заготовке 2 марки стали, скорее всего с разным % углерода...я писал про то, что резом заготовки вдоль либо по диоганали, с последующей сваркой можно добится другого рисунка стали

Xx_neat-beat: It's pattern-welded steel. The original process for making Damascus steel was lost some centuries ago. Pattern-welding produces a similar pattern and properties, but it's an incomplete revival at best.
