This truly is amazing. They need each other, they love each other, and their differences are insignificant. This is an unexplained relationship that people can learn from. I had a squirrel with no tail - we called him Stumpy - who lived in our yard for five or six years. Ruled the yard. Refused almonds, hazelnuts, pecans - would only eat (i.e., demand) walnuts. He would literally ignore anything but walnuts. After 5 or 6 years, he disappeared. We all miss Stumpy, but I assume he went to the Great Walnut Bin in the Sky…..

It is so very sad when you loose a beloved pet like your tailless squirrel, Stumpy, who lived in your yard for five long years. You obviously developed a close and intimate relationship with him. I can imagine the pain that you must have gone through after his departure. God in HIS infinite wisdom has given us the pain of suffering to make us more loving and sensitive human beings. I lost my female cat, Fluffy, after three years...she left our house one afternoon and never returned. I still miss her and mourn for her.

@@rolandfernandez9529 Stumpy was a hoot - he would actually push his way into the house to demand walnuts if there only almonds, peanuts and hazelnuts in the squirrel platforms. And he was very gentle; he would take the walnut very slowly, and gently, unlike some squirrels who will whip the nut out of your hand and god forbid you flinch: you get a small set of razor blades across your hand. Like a mini-Wolverine from the X-Men. Miss the little guy, but we had a good number of years to play with him and watch him boss around the other squirrels. Had a vet call once and ask how Stumpy got around with out a tail. I said, “like any other squirrel, but with more chutzpah and less hesitation!”

Squirrels are very intelligent and affectionate. They really respond to kind human contact and I'm sure that would be the case for a kind k9 soul as well. You should let Helen come inside. I grew up with a pet squirrel named Frisky. She was my best little buddy as a child and lived almost 14 years. I learned a lot about Squirrels from her and others I raised, rehabbed and released. Great little animals!

@@rolandfernandez9529 - thank you for the kind words. Absolutely growing up with Frisky most certainly contributed to my nature though I was already an animal lover from birth it seems. I could write a book about all the animals I've rescued, rehabbed, raised, released or had as pets over the years. Squirrels, chipmunks, a skunk, lizards, turtles, frogs, snakes, hawks, owls, whatever found its way to me. But Frisky was special. My little furry buddy that slept curled into a ball in the corner of my pillow case. You'd be amazed by how truly loving and affectionate they are. If you saw how excited she got when she saw me getting off the bus after school and how she would race up my leg, onto my shoulder and literally hug my face with one paw in my ear and the other in my mouth as she would kiss and nibble at me as a greeting. She truly missed me all day and was beside herself with excitement and happiness when I returned from school. ALL animals are much more intelligent and similar to us than most know. Even tiny animals and insects. And they all respond to kind human contact and affection. But Squirrels especially really love to love. They love each other and they love their humans and it's obvious. If you ever have the opportunity to rescue a baby squirrel, don't hesitate! You'll make a dear friend and companion that you'll never forget!

I am having a kind of war with gray squirrels that want to eat out of our bird feeders. It is difficult to stay mad at them because they are so cute and extremely talented at finding ways up to the bird feeder. I tried leaving food down for the two squirrels that were going after the feeders but they turned into seven squirrels when they all found out that there was free food nearby. I swear that they must meet and discuss where the best eats are.

I have 6 pet squirrels in my yard. I adore them and they trust me. Even during windy winter snow storms they come to my sliding back door to eat. I slide the door open so they can sit inside on the enclosed porch and eat from from the bitter cold. When they're done they pack their cheeks and head home😘!
