Stephen Fry stars as playwright and larger-than-life personality Oscar Wilde in this lush historical drama based on the late Richard Ellmann's definitive biography of one of London's most prolific writers and orators. The story traces Wilde's rise to fame -- from his marriage to Constance (Jennifer Ehle) to his sweeping, torrid affair with a young Oxford graduate, Lord Alfred Douglas (Jude Law), that brought about his imprisonment and downfall.

They're still focusing for the same amount of time, just without a voice over. Needing some voice over guy to explain everything in the movie sounds more like they are dense and can't work it out with a trailer that doesn't directly tell them everything. In reality though, it's just because that's how they made trailers back then since they probably didn't know how to say what the movie was about without directly telling people in the trailer with a voice over.. Now we use parts from the movie itself to explain the movie which is better and more smart and creative (unless they show way too much like they often do lately.. I always stop trailers early as soon as I know I wanna watch it). I'm very glad they don't ruin most trailers with shitty voice overs these days. Especially the ones back then! my god they were bad lol.

@ahoghill54
@ahoghill54 9 жыл бұрын
To those who say that Oscar Wilde's marriage was 'fictitious' I suggest you read about his life rather than just watching a film. He was passionately in love with his wife and also sexually attracted to young men. His wife and mother absolutely supported him and his mother warned him to leave England before the trial. Had he done so he would have been able to live out his life with his family. Tragically his wife and mother both died while he was in prison and he was never allowed to see his children again. Lord Alfred Douglas also abandoned him.
@mariwittenbreer6865
@mariwittenbreer6865 8 жыл бұрын
No his mother told him to stay and that she would never speak to again if he fled. Constance died after he was out of prison. And she divorced him after prison b/c he would not stay away from Bosie. She died shortly thereafter while being operated on. Wilde fairly well abandoned Constance though she did not ever really give up on him. He is claimed to have siad that women were like old dishrag to him sexually, when a friend Frank Hariis suggested he take up with a few whores after prison. Wilde is a very complex character: genius, artist and poseur, it is hard to say just one thing about him.
@spookyben

Wilde also told his friends that once his wife had children, he found her repulsive. And oh yeah he spent gobs of money on Bosie and young men but left his wife and children destitute......great husband and father.

I happened to watch the movie for the first time today, November 30, 2020 --the 120th Anniversary of Oscar Wilde's death. It was by complete chance. The movie, I thought, was so very different from all its predecessors because Stephen Fry looked so much like Wilde and maybe even sounded like him. Certainly a more sonorous voice than his is hard to come by. The acting was superb all round, and the script, cinematography, music, direction and editing were all masterful. Thanks for uploading. Oscar Wilde's tragedy, I believe, was not his being gay at a time when many other men (and women) were also gay in closeted, but in his inability to see the vacuity of Bosie and the destructiveness of his conduct & history. One cannot imagine what Oscar Wilde found so wonderful about him. More importantly, Wilde, -- who was a master of observing society and many of its ridiculous quirks-- could not step aside for one moment and see that Bosie was exactly as ridiculous as all the others but with a mean streak to boot. This is really what Greek Tragedies are in essence. The movie truly brought forth this tragedy to near perfection.

I am very fond of Oscar Wilde, he's my favorite writer. I have nothing against Stephen Fry but I can't see Oscar Wilde in him, and his hairstyle makes his head look too big to be Oscar Wilde especially as a young man before his marriage. Apart from that I think he wrote the Picture of Dorian Grey before getting married. We are also not sure about his being seduced at the time and the manner presented in the movie, I just feel that the scene was just inserted in the movie for commercial reasons. I also know from De Profound, in Wilde's own writing that his wife visited him only to break the news of his mother's death, but he never mentioned that they spoke about being together again nor about his nature as a gay. There is also a lack of sympathy for Oscar Wilde the person, how much he suffered after his release. This part is so abrupt, ending the movie with a clumsy happy ending that he and Douglas are back together and writing down the rest in a line. Oscar actually suffered from being alone and living under a fake name and being deprived of seeing his boys and then his tragic illness that caused his death.

Joe Byrne He was largely Anglo-Irish, which is, quite namely, Irish of English descent. For most of his ancestors were of English origin who settled Ireland around the Dublin region, back all throughout the end of the 1600's till the very end of the 1700's, granted one of his great grandmother's was an Irish Catholic of ancient Gaelic blood, while one of his other grandparents was of mostly Scottish Lowland origin, thus making Oscar at least one third Celtic. Yet much of his bloodlines and lineage could be traced right back to England, yet his famed and rapier styled wit was Irish, along with his outlook on many things. And his heart beat green!!

DrZaius75 ""Upon entering Oxford the first thing I forgot was my Irish accent."" And lest you forget, Oscar Wilde came from the Anglo-Irish bastions of Dublin, and was no doubt as heavily influenced by certain English ways and English culture as he was deeply immersed in Irish culture, lore and customs, granted his wit and sense of ironic and paradoxical humor was Irish all the way, while his heart beat green. Though within the Dublin environs of his youth English as much as Irish culture was quite prominent, and much of Oscar's lineage and heritage could be traced right back to England, of the largely landed gentry style, back all throughout the latter half of the 1600's till the very end of the 1700's. Yet as I typed above, Oscar was Irish first and foremost, his unique, quirky and brilliant sense of humor, his general outlook on things, his nationalistic sense of pride, and in how he truly felt about himself. This amazingly brilliant, flamboyantly iconoclastic and hilariously witty Irish lad of mostly English blood running through his veins (with some Scots and a tad of ancient Irish blood as well). Irish heart, Irish sensibilities, Irish pride, Irish perspective, yet English DNA, not that that greatly influenced or affected his raging, surging, green drenched Irishness one iota, as in spirit Oscar was as Irish as the land itself.

I think it's one of the greatest movie with good acting and music and everything. Though, I still can't believe Oscar Wilde was gay, for some reasons... I would say Michael Sheen was brilliant playing Robbie and I adore him (and his smile^^). By the way, I read somewhere that it was the first appearance of Orlando Bloom... Who could ever think that his début would be a rent boy! :D
