You, my dear Sir, are a whole bunch of wonderful. I'm a crafty mom with a hefty bunch of talent, but sewing with a machine always threw me for a loop. Thank you for the no muss, fuss or frivilous hewy. From a girl raised in a scrapyard with hunters and no mum to show me this kinda of thing, thank you!

I am impressed! For a man, you did a great job! I'm finding out more and more that patterns don't need to be bought. All one needs to do is fit fabrics to themselves making their own patterns and that saves time and money. Thanks for the video.

Thank you so much! I started making things in my teens, initially I bought kits, like for a down parka, snowshoes, etc. Once I saw the patterns I realized I could just make my own. Now here I am making a living at it, who knew?

This is perfect! I’m making some moose hide mittens with a long coyote cuff and I need longer liners inside. This will do the trick nicely! Thank you!
@wildernessinnovation
@wildernessinnovation 5 жыл бұрын
You may want to modify the thumb area with moose hide, it is not stretchy like the fleece is. Simple to do. Instead of the thumb on the side, you move it in by making the thumb a third piece. Look at gloves as an example. Thanks for the comments.

THIS MAN IS A BLESSING I've had a Halloween costume I've been working on (the red guy from dhmis) and I've been trying to make the hand glove things which are basically felt mittens. My first try with it i thought was a complete failure. I used hot glue and staples because I dint know how to sow. The hot glue is NOT a good idea at all and the staples poked out like a sore thumb (it gave me some sore thumbs too). Then I saw this and realized I just needed to turn mine inside out. Now it looks like how I wanted it. To avoid the uncomfortable feeling of staples and hot glue, I wore a red glove under the actual Mitten too. Hope this finds someone who really needs it. I'm definitely gonna want to learn how to sow for this next time.

@MrNOOBISHNOOB Sure you can make the mittens with just a needle and thread. I've made lots of things that way when I'm sitting around doing nothing else. I would do a locking spiral stitch, where you are stitching in spiral along the edge, but as you do each stitch before you pull it tight, stick the needle through the loop, this will be a little sturdier..thanks for watching

these are perfect. I have a lot of sewing to do for Christmas, and a lot of fleece, so thinking how to use up the left over fabric. I thought I could make mitts from them, for the homeless in our town. I would line them if I could, as our winters are -45 or worse, so single layers wouldn't be thick enough, I don't think
@wildernessinnovation
@wildernessinnovation 4 жыл бұрын
Wonderful!, thank you for your comments. We have made them in the past for those in need, a llot for children, they are so simple.. Our fleece was 300 weight so it was good in single layer. They are amazingly warm really. Another nice thing is they are warm when pretty damp or wet too. If they get soaked, take them off and wring them out, put them back on and warm in no time. Good luck. If you need we can send you some fleece scraps.

Going to try this with waterproofed canvas duck cloth on the outside and the fleece on the inside. Or maybe wool on the inside.
@wildernessinnovation
@wildernessinnovation 5 жыл бұрын
jerry glass canvas is nice, I think you’ll like that. You may need to modify the pattern though, this one works for materials that are really stretchy. You’ll probably want to make a two piece thumb so you can bring it in a little. But hey give it a try, testing is part of the adventure.

@jessiemcclure2456
@jessiemcclure2456 4 жыл бұрын
This comment is only 8 years late! If you were to hem the end of the mitten, you would then have a loop to run elastic through. So right before you turn them right side out hem the edge by folding it (outside material should be flipped on the inside) and then run the elastic between where you sewed the hem and the fold of the hem

I have just come across your video, I have a old sheepskin coat that I am hoping to make into mittens, after watching this video I have more confidence in making them
@wildernessinnovation
@wildernessinnovation 4 жыл бұрын
You can surely make your own. The method I show here works really well for stretchy fabric like fleece. For leather and sheepskin which are more rigid you need to use a three piece pattern where the thumb takes about 1/3rd of the palm piece, this places the thumb on the underside allowing a good grip. You can easily get a pattern by taking apart an old pair of gloves or buy a cheap pair that fits well. It's pretty easy you just need to get the thumb part and you can then fit that to the other two pieces like I show in the video...Hope this helps. You may want to make a couple pair of mittens from fleece for practice before doing the sheepskin.

What would really be cool is if you could show me how to make some mittens with a slit between the palm and the fingers that would open and close with velcro. That way you could get your fingers out such as pulling a trigger. I had a pair of mitten like that for duck hunting, but I can't find them anymore. They also had a wide elastic band on the wrist to keep the cold out.

Nice and easy, but I would have made a tad larger seam allowence in the thumb area. I always feel colder in my thumbs if the mittens thumb is kind of skin tight. But I also got an idea of how to use my scraps of all the fleeces I've got lyng in my sewing room......Perhaps use it for a lining inside oil skin cloth.......

yes this is a very simplified way of making a mitten and the thumb really needs to be rotated towards the palm, which is done in a three piece pattern. The intention here is to show a way to make mittens that anyone can do. When using material like fleece which has lots of stretch, this method works perfectly well, however if using leather or something similar that does not have lots of stretch to it, this will be very unsatisfactory. I've made fleece mittens that I used for a whole winter as my primary gear and found them able to perform whatever I needed to have done. Thanks for the comment. Perhaps I should do a video with a three piece pattern to show that...
