Or if you “find god”. Like I don’t care if someone is religious or not, that’s their life not mine. But I do care when they try pushing it on you or say “well your life wouldn’t be like this if you let god into your life” or “you wouldn’t feel this way if you had god”. I was religious for a while, I even attended different religious churches. But that never did anything for me and if anything pushed me away. I attended youth groups and occasionally read some of the stories in the Bible, but now I just want to learn about other religions, and have some knowledge from the book to refute crazy religious people twisting the Bible’s words.

Once, I got a text from a scammer saying that my car was stolen. I responded with "Oh yeah, that makes complete sense despite the fact that I've never owned a car and the cars my family does own are both in the garage." But the wierdest part is that they requested I buy a car and give it to them so they could get my non-existent car back. Worst scammer ever.

Funny enough, the tea house scam seems like a genuinely nice service you can provide. Like, tourists able to meet with a nice local and ask a bunch of questions while having traditional tea sounds kind of nice
@FunkyLittlePoptart
@FunkyLittlePoptart 7 ай бұрын
I don't see how it's actually a scam. They have to take extra time to explain things to tourists and give them a nicer experience than they would get somewhere that caters to locals. To me, that means you pay a little more.
@qwinlyn
@qwinlyn 7 ай бұрын
@@FunkyLittlePoptartit’s usually not a little. I’ve read stories about people falling for this scam at bars instead of tea houses and ending up with hundreds of dollars worth of debt.

@@qwinlyn That's not tourists. That's drunk idiots. I had a badly behaved friend who thought she was hot poo who used to do this sort of thing to men. They ask to buy her a drink and she'd order a bottle of champagne. It backfired on her one night when she pulled the scam without bothering to think that maybe the dude didn't have the $80 for her bottle. He said he offered to buy her a drink, not a bottle and refused to pay. Her friends all wound up chipping to cover it, and everyone was pissed about it.
@qwinlyn
@qwinlyn 7 ай бұрын
@@FunkyLittlePoptart yes, this also happens to drunk people in their own area. But once you add in a language barrier, exchange rates and “I’m on vacation” feelings, the scale increases. $80 is a very big amount of money, and I’m not discounting it, but you’ll notice I mentioned hundreds of dollars. That’s a bit different.
@TheBluestflamingos
@TheBluestflamingos 7 ай бұрын
@@FunkyLittlePoptart the main problem is the dishonesty. If the woman introduced herself as an representative of the tea house or tour guide, no scam. If she lies to you and pretends to be a new friend, scam. Also, it doesn't strike me as a coincidence that they sent a pretty young woman and she chose to single out a man traveling solo. So, the con would probably usally be inviting the man on a date so he will feel pressured to act cool and not make a fuss when they surprise him with the bill. Plus, in most primarily English speaking countries, it's customary for the man to pay when he's on a date, especially a first date. So now thats an extra $40 to the teashop that he wouldn't have paid if he wasn't lied to.

My dad’s favorite technique for dealing with scam callers is to mess with them. One of his personal favorites is posing as a old German girl named “Ima Fraud”, and he gets the scammer to say that name, and he responds with “yes, I know you’re a fraud.” It is always hilarious.

It needs to be said, ANYONE can fall victim to a scam, no matter how smart or aware you are. They just have to catch you at the right time, when your guard is down. People who deal with scammers and know their tricks have gotten scammed, myself included. We can laugh at how silly they are all day, but their scams work for a reason. If you fall victim, don't feel dumb or ashamed. It happens. Just take the steps necessary to get your life and finances back in order.

You are absolutely right. I partially fell for a scam, even when I was aware of scams like them going around. I fell for it because I had just linked a card to my Amazon account and they called me the next day saying my account was hacked and a large purchase was made. It was just the timing. I'm just glad I wised up (and calmed down a bit) before I did anything too damaging and irreversible. Like you said, it happens. Even to the best of us. The shame is all theirs.

As someone who used to work at a blue store with a yellow spark, we are actually trained to keep an eye out for scams. The training video basically says that people, especially elderly people, who are buying multiple gift cards or gift cards of large amounts, we are to ask what they are for. If they say that they're buying it for family, we are safe to proceed. But if they basically say anything else, we are to send them to customer service, get a manager, or straight up deny the purchase. Granted, this was several years ago, so things might have changed, but this was how I was trained.

My partner's mother had a scam call recently (in Germany). She got a call from a woman crying hysterically claiming to be her daughter (or rather calling her mama) and pretending to be in trouble and with the police. The phone was then handed to another woman who claimed to be police. Thankfully my partner's mum had her wits about her and kept asking what happened and if she needed to come over, which they couldn't properly answer. After the call was over she immediately called her actual daughter to confirm her suspicions of it being a scam (and to process the scare).

Well done. Both of your mums. My grandmother (Bavaria) had a similar call at year. She too didn't fall for it, but she had some fun wasting the scammers time, asking irritating questions etc, before she hung up and informed the police. The police part also is my advice to anyone experiencing that kind of scam attempt. Do it, call the police, let them know that there's [specific] scam going on right now in X area (it's often certain areas at a time), so they have it easier to warn people and look out for the scammers. Which they both actually do, with the first being more successful than the second. Neither is super successful, but heck, if it saves just one person from falling for it it's worthwhile.

Those scammers often look up names that sound like they're from an older generation and then go with it. My little brother (20M) literally fell victim to a scam last Thursday. They told him they wanted to make a painting of a picture he'd posted of our family dog, and in order to do that they needed money from him to pay the "art fee" without showing they were working on it. They sent money over to his account, he tried sending two payments over, second one got rejected, person on the other end told him to go to an ATM and follow their instructions. When me and my folks put a stop to it, they sent him the edgiest threats imaginable. People like this are disgusting. I'd hate them, if they weren't so pathetic that they're not worth the energy.

One thing I think is a very telltale sign of a scam is someone being weirdly specific about the proof of whatever. Like, with the paypal thing, if they specifically mention getting an email (easily faked) and not, ya know, receiving the money, probably a scam. Similarly if they insist on one specific method of handling things, be it payment or something else. Like, someone that's not trying to scam you will generally be fine with you checking your account or handling things whichever way gets the job done.

As an artist to other artists: do not tell them the information in the chat. Make them search for the information and have them tell you what they want. Scammers won't look it up even if you send them the link, real people will. You can also set up a Google form for your commissions. I've gotten the commission scam too many times and I've gotten really good at spotting it. Luckily I've never gotten scammed though.

I had someone offering me 300$ on Instagram for a commission of a dog. Their English was broken ( which was what ticked me off that something was up because their pfp was a redneck as fuck guy and his golden retriever ) I checked their profile and they only had one picture ( their pfp ) They kept asking for my email, even after I sent them the link to pay me through cashapp. So I thought ok. I’ll just send them a screenshot of my cashapp name. Maybe that’ll work They kept saying it wouldn’t work and they needed my email to send the money. I didn’t feel comfortable at this point so I politely told them I wouldn’t be doing a commission for them. Not sure if it was a scam but I think it’s highly likely.

I once did a big commission (figurine) for for a guy that set off all the red flags of a scammer. (poor spelling, over complicated paypal hijinks, "I'm a bit short this month because [dramadump]", "here $13 it all I got", "Can u front the shipping cost, u know I'm good 4 it bro" etc.) So I figured I had basically wasted my time and materials, but he HAD sent me his shipping address, and it was relatively close to me so I just decided to DM him and ask if I could come over. And much to my surprise, he agreed. And to my even greater surprise, I didn't get mugged in a dark alley but he really just was the brokest-ass mofo you've ever met. And a pretty chill dude. We actually became friends and we would sometimes just hang out at his place and play old videogames on his potato pc in like 15fps and watch pirated anime. It took him almost 3 years to pay off his commission in installments, and it was probably the most expensive thing in his one room apartment. What can I say? In the end the guy was just a cultured patron of the arts.

I spent 3 hours trying to figure out what was wrong before I finally just retyped a bunch of the lines because it wouldn't put error lines under the specific character. It just noted that there was an issue in the line, or in a spot further down where the incorrect character caused a problem. Those kinds of switches can be so easily missed. I've worked for a sewage maintenance company on the planning department (planning the appointments for unclogging and repairing services and such). I've spoken to hundreds of people calling us saying they were scammed, in the two years I've worked there. Some got ripped off for thousands of euros and were blaming our company for it, even though we weren't involved at all. People really stop thinking rationally when there's a sense of urgency...

Honestly, I really admire your sympathies to scam victims. I haven't fallen to any serious scams, but I know there's a lot of shame and regret for scam victims, and it's not serving anyone good to start shaming them more because the scam "is so obvious" or something like that. Sometimes people have a bad day, aren't thinking clearly or aren't paying close attention and the scam happens at the right time. People getting shamed is making scams less reported, and makes them harder to be resisted since we don't have enough knowledge about them.

I had so many people approaching me in China and inviting me to a teahouse. Eventually I agreed to go for a beer with someone, because I knew it was a scam, and after following then and watching them go into a teahouse I said "I thought we were going for a beer; I hate tea", and walked off.

I got scammed at work and lost my job over it, so watching stuff like this is bittersweet. Thinking back when I was a teenager and young adult, the number of times I got scammed or just bought expensive products/services that I could have easily lived without disgusts me, both with myself for being gullible and with people for being so low down and scummy. I mostly just keep to myself and don’t answer the phone, email, or engage with strangers in general online or in person because so many times, people trying to take you for a ride in one way or another. I wish that I could completely shake the shame, but it lingers in the depths and resurfaces when I’m reminded of what happened.

A few years back there was a scam call where the person was trying to say my brother had gotten into a car accident ( there were details that didn't make sense and such that pointed to it being a scam ) I laid into the person and they tried to chastise me about cursing before i hung up

39:08 for any artists who are new to the commission game you NEED to have them pay before you give them the art I like to have them pay half before I send the sketch then the rest before the actually finished drawing this keeps people from stealing and scamming artists

Thank you for using your platform to cover such an important topic. It is good to familiarize people with scam techniques. I always tell people "Nobody is going to reach out to you to randomly help you. They will nearly always be trying to get something from you. There are very few exceptions."

45:04 Retail worker here. At least where I work we are required to have management come over and approve any gift card purchases over $25. Management is also instructed to conversationally ask what the gift cards are for if it is large amounts (but never push anyone for information). We also have to keep posted signage about gift card scams. I've never seen anyone in an active scam but hopefully some of these deterrents have helped someone.

LMAOOOO That's so funny. Last year, I got like 5 different messages about how my son/daughter had gotten a new number and I needed to text them over whatsapp. Mind you, I had only turned 20 and I literally can't have children (lesbian lol). Every time I got another one, I just went "Oh wow, I didn't even know I was a mom!" and blocked them

Side note for the commission one: Don't let people say your commissions should be cheap. If a skatch takes 1-3 days, the background and lighting likely take more, sure 100 for that small of a canvas is maybe too much, but like think of YOUR LABOR as well when pricing

Thanks for covering scams Click, being reminded of the case with the young lad getting affected by scammers was really sad. While these scams seems mostly harmless because they are frequent they do cause real world damage to vulnerable people.

I once bought a set of TMNT figures from a shady guy with "fart" in his username. Had one good review, probably a bot. Payed about 100 USD I think, together with the international shipping. It arrived, good condition, unboxed original and we even texted "thank you for the good business" to each other. I was both happy and shocked that it wasn't a scam. I needed my turtles, was just glad someone was selling a full set.
