Thanks so much for this. Have my first 50K trail run next week & feeling unprepared as haven’t put in enough miles with the hot weather here in NY. Told my daughter my goals “finish, don’t come last & don’t get hurt”. I really find it hard to get going at the start - not sure if it’s because I’m old (63). After watching this; I won’t feel bad starting slowly & gradually upping the pace. Big boost for my confidence 👍🏻🏃🏻‍♂️!

Excellent video Claire , to have good advice from elite athletes on long distance racing is really brilliant , it gives people some good ideas for what to do in the next ultra , moderate speed in the first few miles it is really a wise thing to do .

I had two races this year where I just had to ignore the usual advice about not going too hard at the start; the first was 20 mile mountain race here in Ireland over very diffuclt terrain and on an unmarked course we were supposed to be able to navigate by map and compass; this was impractial for me for various reasons - I am 65 and need reading glasses- so I had to keep up with a small group of runners who were a bit faster than I would normally run at and it turned out to be one if my best races - the sheer fear of losing them meant I just had to keep chasing after them. The second race was a 47 KM in Austria with 4,200 metres in climbs - I had DNF'd lastyear at the final time check so this year I had trained with a view to go as hard as I could from the start and the result was I finished in 11 hours with an hour to spare before race finish and with 15 minutes to spare at the final checkpoint I had DNF'd at last year. Both those were learning experiences for me that following the usual advice about taking it easy early on may not always be the right advice. I suppose learning to train harder than I had been doing was also part of the learning experience.

Wow that's really interesting, everyone always says to go slow at the start but those are 2 times when you really can't do it, thanks for sharing some very valid reasons to ignore the otherwise sound advice from these pros! Claire

I'm a very slow runner and take ages to get going so I comfort myself that I must be a long distance runner (although possibly currently a long distance runner procrastinating on the couch). Great video, thank you

Thanks for these tips. I am not experienced in this, but I have a 60km trail race with an additional 3km ascend and 3km descend on the 27th. I will try to follow these tips. For me the biggest problem is starting too fast and food/drink intake. The fear of finishing last is for sure present. Hope things go well. Thank you!

you'll do great I'm sure. It's funny how a lot of us have the fear of coming last (me too) but at the end of the day someone has to come last and if you are last at a 60km you are still way ahead of what most people do, including myself. Have a great time

I managed to complete it in 9hr and 39 minutes. Good enough for 9th place out of 20 people. I was not ready for this, it was a real battle. Legs were so tired, even the slight 20k downhill to finish was tough. Thanks for the videos and looking forward to the next one!
