If you're confused why her wife being the sword saint didn't want to be one in the first place, it's because she was chosen. Even if you don't know shit about sword, it will forcefully making you the most powerful swordsman in the world. And only one sword saint can exist in the world at a time. So Theresia's rank is equal to that of a god among swordsmen. Currently Reinhardt holds the title.

Although being sword saint is a automatical guarantee to be at least top 3 strongest swordsman in your generation - hardly any generation of sword saints (even successful like Theresia) could be called "god", they're just really strong as swordsmen. There were only two generations of sword saints who are strong enough to be called gods among not only swordsmen, but all fighters in general. First generation and eighth generation, having world third strongest fighter and world strongest fighter positions respectively.
