For side story reader, Its sad to see how Wilhelm changed over years, aging and becoming "blunt". He went from man capable of soloing all country best warriors together to man, who can't beat some big flying meatball. I mean, old Wil is still stronger than Elsa and stronger than all Roswaal's maids together, for example. But it's nothing more than a shadow of prime 20 y.o Wil, who killed characters of his old version level in seconds. It really stacks with narrative changes in his personality.

Wilhelm doesn't lose in fights because he's weak all the time now. He literally stopped getting stronger in his mind and sees it as half-assed because he's unable to abandon his connections with others in place of the sword. He can't be as strong as he wants because he's had Theresia, Bordeaux, Carol, Grimm and many more there to remind him that a human being requires other people to live, he cannot become a sword without abandoning those he loves and the deaths mounted up from the days he DID do that are far far too high for that to be acceptable.

So yeah I don't understand, I think the saddest version of Wilhelm was always his childhood /young adult years, and he himself constantly reiterates that he was not a good person back then. Feeling bad for a man with regrets over the man who created those regrets is strange to me.

@@siginotmylastname3969 is that so? In battle ballad it was demonstrated that he turned his burdens into his strengths, entering his peak state without need in giving all himself to swordsmaship. He didn't need to abandon beloved ones to enter his peak state, he entered his peak state thanks to the need to keep beloved ones. And the fact that he blunted, becoming weak compared to his prime is pretty clear. In arc 5 Wil mentioned that he doubted that he can win against Garf. Arc 5 Garf gets beaten like a child by zombie Kurgan, who himself is (stated by Wilhelm) just a shadow of former strength. And we have prime 21 y.o Wilhelm, who surpasses Kurgan. The difference is kinda solid, isn't it? Old Wil ≤ arc 5 Garf

Not true. Rem made a JOKE about being second wife BEFORE the battle. And Subaru said o Rem he loves her AFTER the battle.
