Apparently the reason these commercials are so violent is because Jim Henson hated coffee and said he would only drink it if someone held a gun to his head so he made that the concept for the Wilkins coffee commercials.

TMNT was marketed to kids, is why he had problems. Back then, coffee was not thought of as something kid friendly. Henson had a lot of more grown-up humor going on that's often overlooked and gets his full career glossed over as child entertainment.

From TV Tropes: Ironically, it was actually quite easy for Jim Henson to come up with the many ridiculous ways to punish Wontkins, because like Wontkins, Henson himself never liked Wilkins coffee, either - or coffee at all, for that matter.
