I think part of the reason kobe wasn't initially selected was because he was such a loner. For a big portion of his career he was a pain in the ass as a teammate. Extremely aloof, critical of teammates, generally not that fun to play with. Colangelo's main focus was chemistry, and at that time kobe was DEFINITELY not someone you brought in to fix a team's chemistry. He didn't have the image we now have of him until quite a bit later in his career. In fact, in interviews with players from this team several of them had questions about the wisdom of adding kobe to the roster, and I think this experience was a part of Kobe changing for the better.

That Spain team was very good. The three players they mentioned, the Gasol brothers and Ricky Rubio, have all had at least very good nba careers. Pau Gasol was rookie of the year, a 6-time all-star, and a 4-time all-nba selection. Marc Gasol was also a 3-time all-star, 2-time all-nba selection, and he won defensive player of the Year. Ricky Rubio is not as decorated, but he had a similar amount of hype coming out of Spain. He has been playing professionally in Europe since he was 16, and while never an all-star, he is currently top 75 all-time in assists, top 25 all-time for assists per game, top 100 in career steals and top 50 all-time in steals per game. Rubio is only 32 and is technically still playing although he is away from the team indefinitely for mental health reasons.

One quick note, you guys mentioned how hes not mentioning Bird. At the point of the Dream Team Bird had already had tons of back problems and was on the decline for a few years at that point. He was still a good player but I think he was chosen in part to honor him more than they thought he was going to be a key player. Magic was a few years younger and although not at his peak, he was closer to his prime than Bird, and his Lakers were just in the finals with Jordan’s Bulls. I believe if it was just about which players would make the best team at that time, there’s a great argument that Bird shouldn’t have made the roster.

Both Bird and Magic were past their prime. Bird wasn't the charismatic, vocal leader though, Magic was.... that was the comparison being made. While Magic was more physically capable at the time (due to Birds bad back) It had nothing to do with current playing ability. He simply chose a clip that also had Bird in it. Also keep in mind, Magic hadn't even played in the NBA for 9 months when the Olympics started due to his HIV.

But he didnt even mention that Bird and Magic were the team captains. He said Magic and Jordan were but Jordan turned down being a team captain so it could be Bird and Magic

Na there is nobody who would deny Bird on the dream team, the only player that was ever denied on the dream team was Isaiah Thomas only because of the drama between him and MJ and that bad back Larry Bird can still score 8 or more shots in a raw by himself against another prime NBA star's that they practice against, cause they a little shit talk shit about him not scoring, and then he do something just to show them you don't talk trash on Larry just to teach them a lesson, yeah and he cook them, they call Larry Legend for a good reason. And the dream teams captains are Magic and Bird and Jordan but it's Magic the main captain, that is where they literally both pass the torch to MJ, yeah they are great but if we see all the players, non of the three are the not the one walk with some impressive thing it was Charles Barkley aka Chuck who scored the most point for the team, it's funny 😂, but if you gonna talk about the dream team you can't left out Larry Legend he is important as 2nd leader as well, because the team need him. All the players are important to their own roll but the real leader are the coach.

Most Americans feel like we must always be the best at basketball. And it seems we have become a victim of our own success. International teams have enough familiarity with us and have a number of NBA stars and are no long intimidated by us. In addition, many of the best American NBA players simply don't relish the opportunity to play for team USA. It is a huge commitment, and no longer just a, find any willing NBA players, show up and win! The other issue is the style of the international game vs the NBA. Europeans play the international style and rules which differ in some key ways from the NBA. And quite frankly, that style is proving to be superior than the NBA's style of play. Wouldn't be surprised if you start to see more foreign coaches headed to the NBA. Sometimes a fresh perspective is needed. After all didn't we have to bring in foreign coaches to teach us how to play soccer? Yeah, and we still suck, just not as much. USA basketball is in a bad place right now. We have fallen, but we will get up!

A bad place? 2004 was the most recent time USA men's team didn't win gold lol. They've been #1 in every olympics since. In international play, the US has only ever cared about getting gold in the olympics, they've never cared about these FIBA tournaments. I agree that the level of international play is steadily rising, which is a great thing for basketball and the US. But no other country comes close to US depth of talent still. Like Serbia might have Jokic who's the best player on the planet, but he alone isn't beating a team of KD, Steph, Bron, Tatum, Bam, Booker etc.

Kobe didn’t rebuild the Redeem Team. Based on what we saw in the documentary, he showed up last minute to help them win but completely isolated himself from the team. It was a mixed effort from Lebron and Kobe that created what became the Redeem Team. Kobe was the team leader by example (work ethic) but Lebron was their leader vocally and helped bridge the gap between Kobe and everyone else. Not enough people give Lebron credit for that and how much he impacted their team chemistry.

I don't think you should be allowed to go back to your country and represent them in the Olympics. Just like people that move to the USA and than try to ruin our country like theirs. If you want to play for your country than your country ought to be good enough to play in. They all come here to make our money and live the good life than to back and play for a country that was not good enough for them or they would have stayed. The USA has won every gold medal even if they lost since most of the players no matter which country that wins all play in the NBA. If your country was so great you would have stayed there and played. I am an immigrant and I moved to USA because all the countries my family has been through sucked. If I wanted to do something for any country it would be the country that made me successful and took me out of the countries that sucked. Pisses me off the two faced crap.
