As an animator and character designer myself, this is actually something I've spent quite a LOT of time both learning about and teaching my own staff. How to design a character with specific considerations in mind, making sure that their designs make sense in 3D space, embracing that headache earlier ON, to avoid having it cause headaches later down the road, if and when we need to construct 3D models for the characters, and depict them in CG. This video, like SO many others you have done, is something I will no doubt find useful for referencing in the future, when explaining this phenomenon.

Rightfully so. Any sane person would react negatively about the new dragon ball movie being CGI specially because 90% of cgi in anime is absolutely horrible. Who would want their favorite show to go through such a risky route? Its stupid. They should’ve released an ACTUAL teaser, if they’ve been working on the movie since broly then there’s no way that they dont have any footage they could’ve used for a teaser but instead they gave us this “teaser” who just left a horrible taste in many. Goku’s hair looked like a piece of plastic and the frame rate was really bad, CG and low frames usually dont go well but in some cases like Into the Spiderverse it can work out, but this is anime, not a comic/cartoon art style and like i said earlier, a HUGE majority of studios have not perfected 3d animation.

This trailer brought out just as much reaction from me as the first broly trailer did 100% As an animator who has experimented with both 3d and 2d, and has been experimenting with combining the two to make em stronger together, the trailer opened my eyes to another beautiful way to reach that end. I do, of course, have minor gripes or things I would change, but they're only that, minor. While, perhaps their isn't as much practical room for 3d animators to put their own spin on how unique an individual frame can look, their is still plenty of room for that individuality in the movement. This is assuming no elements will be drawn onto the frame itself, but I suspect that was done in the teaser by looking at the knuckles and face. If there are things drawn over the model, the amount of ways to express individuality will increase. Plus, there are other ways to bring more variety to the 3d look too. For instance, doing different models based on different ways to draw goku. A shintani approach and then a Takahashi approach. Not saying that will be or is even likely to be. It's far more likely to have that one model the whole time. Just saying that there are ways to bring some more variety to the 3d world.

@MajoraZ3 жыл бұрын
I completely disagree. While there's tons of things Spiderverse does right, like an incredible cel shaded style and 2d overlay effects for smears and a perspective heavy look normally only 2d animation can do; Spiderverse also needlessly limits the animation of the 3d so movement doesn't happen every single frame (like in 2d, where movement is on twos, or on threes, etc), which ends up looking choppy: The fact that 3d software automatically CAN show movement every single frame with no extra effort is one of the advantages the medium has: Why not combine the best of both worlds where you have the butter smooth animation with movement on every frame that 3d offers, and then just do the cel shading and hand drawn smear overlays?

3D and 2D both have things the other struggles with, for example doing rotations and having wilder camera angles is harder when the camera simply is the drawings. To see what I mean you could look at the second part of the DB Legends intro and compare how the camera follows the action compared to some 2D intros of older games. 3D and 2D are usually used together if a scene wants to have a lot of camera movement like in Demon Slayer for example. The main benefit of 2D is that you are not working with a model thus giving the animator more freedom. There are obviously other differences but you get the point.

There this notion that 3D CGI is better than traditional 2D animation. Which is like saying sculptures are better than paintings. They're just two different forms of art conveying an image. Japan mastered the traditional art of animation decades ago in the 1980s. I see no reason to relinquish the medium because we're not doing it as much in the West anymore. The truth is the only company that abandoned traditional animation was Disney. That wasn't necessarily a good thing because it simply made traditional animation more of a lost art. Less and less people out there do it anymore. Which is a real shame.

I dont intrinsically hate 3d anime. I think, if given enough love, care, and time. it can even be better then 2d animation. Look at a lot of pixars movies, and at things like Beaststars for a more anime centric example. But the problem is that a lot of productions don't get the required time and care they required, or they get handled by more inexperienced studios (like beserk 2016). The end result just ends up looking so much worse then traditional 2d. Its just so easy to screw up 3d animation if you dont know what your doing, and it worries me whenever a new 3d animated series or film comes out because the track record for these sorts of things arnt great. Bug yeah, it looks like this Dragon Ball movie knows what its doing for the most part (minus the camera, really hope they fix that). And this video really did a good job explaining to me why I shouldnt worry as much about this production. So thanks for the great vid Ajay.

Although I don't like the issue with some of the artistic charm lost in relying solely on 3d assets, judging by the high bar set by the DB Legends trailer I have confidence that they can make quality content. The Piccolo pic is definitely an example of the 3d render in action, that "character sheet" is definitely the new 3d model in practice. As long as we fine-tune and correct a lot of the art like you said the movie has extremely high potential to surpass our wildest dreams for consistent and quality fast-paced animation without budgeting issues.

I think anime execs think we (IE western anime fans) see 2D animation as some sort of compromise, when if anything it's a huge part of the appeal of anime. I love 2D animation no matter where it's from, but America has almost completely abandoned it, at least when it comes to cinema. Anime and especially anime films are some of the last refuges where we get to see 2D animation on such a scale and I'd hate to see that phased out. Like, Lupin the Third: The First was absolutely fantastic, and I'm glad it showed that Japanese animation studios can make a 3D film every bit as stunning and vibrant as Disney or Pixar can make, but that's almost to a fault; visually speaking it wasn't all too different experience from the films those two studios put out, and I'd hate to see animated films get completely homogenised like that. Getting to see films like Broly or Promare on the big screen is a rare enough experience as is; I'd hate to see it go completely extinct.

I've learned to see, though far from master din my own drawings, the understanding that inconsistencies and variations in shape structure and rhythm can bring a still image alive that I don't think I would ever have been able to see if I had never started drawing. It's the same principle with 2D versus 3D animation. Your mind starts to tune out all of the things that are consistent across shots and frames, but the inherent variations put in by hand-drawn frames continually revivifies the experience.

the intro though... nice! I am curious how the movie will look for real I think it looks quite impressive it's mix of 2D & 3D animation I am willing to give this movie a shot then

Ajay, i used to believe that the issue with the camera had to do with timing, not spacing. The camera was moving at variable framerates, a spacing issue for me would be for example if the framerate was stable but the distance in space was uneven. You still feel a jankiness and pull even with perfect framerate. That's why it was so easy to fix in a fan edit

Great video! Was scrolling through your twitter a few days back so all of this isn't news to me, but condensing it into a video is really the way to bring that information to the confused dragonball masses

I’d much rather the film be 100% CGI than to switch between 2D for low key moments and 3D for action as that would be really distracting for me. It’s like I’d rather it look consistent

The biggest turn-off I have with CGI anime is how robotic character expressions tend to be. Without breaking the model, they are much less expressive than 2D counterparts, and I have yet to see anime CGI that overcomes that.
