Underselling how he took a Swedish team from the fourth division to the knockout stages of the europa league where he won against Arsenal at the Emirates. Potter is a real life FM manager.

My thoughts exactly, like Swedish teams are usually very bad compared to the rest of Europe. Yet, he was able to take one of the worst teams to the top league, into the Europe league, and win against Arsenal with those players. Let me remind you that most Swedish football players have a market cap under 1 million euros.

Brighton should go for Pochettino. Why not. He did an amazing job at Southampton and arguably at my club Spurs (I say arguably, because we should have won at least 1 trophy under him). But damn Chelsea seem to change their manager all the time and still win stuff...just proves their players turn it on when they feel like it, ever since Frank and JT that squad has been toxic, and Graham most likely won't last more than a couple seasons. Maybe you'll get him back again who knows..

@@bretton_woods I like Pochettino, but I think that would be a bad move for both parties. You suspect that Pochettino backs himself at a higher level than Brighton in terms of club power, and that sort of gap can create an uneasy relationship. The manager thinks he should be managing higher and gets frustrated, other big clubs are always circling, waiting to poach them, and some fan's get miffed that the manager doesn't appreciate the club as much as they do. Trust me, you don't want that. I'm an Everton fan, and a Carlo Ancelotti fan, yet I never wanted Ancelotti at Everton. Just look how that turned out. I agree with you and definitely think tuchel deserved more time but this seemed like a long time coming. He always hinted that he was worried about his job when Chelsea first got hit with the sanctions. The last few months I just feels likes Tuchels mindset has been deteriorating. He was running out of solutions and trying too many formations without success. Other clubs seemed to have started figuring out his play as well. He just looked lost in his last few press conferences. I'm sure his messy divorce clouded his mind to an extent to. I almost wonder if he's just been too hard on the players as multiple relationships were seemingly souring around him.

Of course the question is whether he can translate his success to a big team where the pressure and demands are at their highest but I believe his philosophies will translate well to our squad. Will miss Tuchel a lot but I look forward to Potter's reign as manager.

As a neutral from a club perspective (though still English), I hope he does well. Other than Lampard getting the same job, largely from association from his playing days, I can't remember the last time an English manager was appointed by one of the top clubs in the country. With those teams traditionally only wanting 'proven winners', it meant importing from La Liga, Serie A & the Bundesliga in particular, so English managers were kind of boxed out, shy of somehow landing a job abroad with a realistic title contender - though I suppose British managers Moyes and Rodgers similarly bucked this trend. Aside from the nationalistic reasons, he seems a nice guy & has done tremendously well at his previous clubs. Granted, dealing with the egos of top players will be a unique challenge, though the perception from the outside looking in is that Chelsea don't suffer from this too badly, whether that be by accident or successful implementation of a 'no dickheads' policy.

It’s a good deal yet slightly odd for Chelsea and Potter. No one really expected the Tuchel sacking, at least not yet. And apart from his first managerial job, Potter has always taken over at the end of the season where he has time to implement his plan and system as well as the ability to buy and sell players. Now he’s in the deep end, where he has limited time and he’s stuck with the squad (and who knows whether Boehly will be willing to spend again in January). I’m sure he will succeed as he’s a great manager but he may not be given the time if he needs it.

I think Chelsea under Boehly will be a lot more stable and analytical in their decision making. Football changed a lot over the last few years. In 2004 Roman could come in as an oligarch and spend massively on the club while rivals ManU and Arsenal went into debt. His big pockets allowed to club to spend its ways to titles. Now a lot more teams have billionaire owners and the ability to spend. Chelsea's transfer policies have been quite bizarre and inefficient over the last few years. They failed to capitalize on their UCL title and other teams financial woes last year and it cost them dearly. Tuchel was a very good coach but inflexible and has a history of burning bridges in other clubs. So I'm sure Boehly and co. didn't want to spend massive money to build a squad that suits only one manager's style. Potter is a very progressive coach. He's flexible and malleable. He truly turned Brighton into a team you didn't want to face if you were a big club. I loved his adjustment and I think he has the temperament and comes from a more American model of running franchises with Brighton. In the MLB there's teams like the Oakland Rays and Tampa Bay Rays who have very small budgets relative to the Dodgers and they consistently produce good talent and good results and have managers in place who can deal with constant roster turnover and down years. They trade their players at their peak value and continually reload their squads with talented young players. I think the appeal to have a coach who can work with a DoF and the board will make Chelsea a lot more efficient in their transfer policies and their ultimate long term health. With Newcastle and Arsenal ascending and other clubs have access to funds, you can't consistently expect to win the league every year and spend as if it's league title or bust. Man City has shown what a smooth sailing operation can look like if you have the patience and continuity in place.

City are a Domestic power but nothing in Europe where it matters.... Abramovich went head to head vs Fergie's greatest teams & Man Utd were left in the mud & then have gone toe to toe w/ City crushing them for the 2015 Prem & smashing Pep for the 2017 Prem & 2021 CL.... Chelsea have Zero debt are completely FFP compliant, have one the great academies & women's teams in Europe ...... Boehly has zero experience running a Pro Sports team of any kind & it shows.... making remarks like "I'm sure Boehly did not want to do this or did not want to do that" is laughable b/c you're clearly imagining a scenario you wish to be true instead of dealing w/ facts Boehly just broke the transfer spending record at Chelsea after buying the club from Abramovich just 100 days ago - just let that sink in..... Boehly was prepared to spend up to 500M this summer & that is Only possible b/c Abramovich ran the club so well...... in the last 10 yrs Chelsea have the same Gross Spend as City & Man Utd bit a Net Spend that is 10th b/c of selling so many young players from the academy & players that do not fit the club that proves the development at the club is world class at multiple levels b/c Chelsea consistently Sell players for More than we buy them for.... Lukaku was a disaster on the pitch but he was literally FREE b/c Chelsea used the cash from other player sales to buy him - that's just One example Boehly publicly backed Tuchel, less than a month ago stated he was in contract negotiations to Extend Tuchel w/ a raise & wanted him to pick players & help choosing the new Scouting director To suddenly decide after spending all that cash for players to fit Tuchel's system & publicly back the manager only to sack him 6 games into the season b/c Tuchel can't stomach spending time w/ Boehly & listening to him pontificate on "Soccer" is utterly brainless no matter how you lay it out Tuchel was 10-3-1 top of the table w/ a 33-6 Goal Diff last Dec 1st before injuries ravaged the team & then sanctions ravaged the club..... All the controversy last spring clearly made up the minds of several players to leave - Christensen, Rudiger, Alono, Azpi, Lukaku - key members of the club in Leadership positions & their performance was Shocking as they allowed other clubs to romance them In spite of all this Tuchel's makes Top 4, wins a couple European Trophies, makes 2 Finals w/ back ups & youngsters on the back line holds a Monster Liverpool team to ZERO goals over 240 Min in 2 Domestic Finals, it took a Miracle in the final 5 min for Real Madrid to hold us off from progressing to the CL Semi's & he dragged us into Top 4 by the sheer force of his will the yr before, Tuchel took over the worst Chelsea team in 30 yrs - Frank had us in 9th place & falling & the yr before Lampard's team gave up the most goals by Any Chelsea team in 30 yrs Tuchel tool THAT team & proceeded to absolutely Destroy Real Madrid & City to win Abramovich's 2nd Champ League in 9 yrs & that team set the Champ League record for fewest goals allowed in the KO stages by a European Champion By contrast Potter started fast last yr - just like this yr - taking 12 of 15 pts in the first 5 PL games but the wheels fell off after that as Brighton won 3 of the next 25 matches - losing 6 in a row at one point while being outscored 13-1 during that stretch & scored only 42 goals on the season surrendering 44.... Potter is an avg manager w/ no accomplishments to speak of - anyone can be mediocre Potter's Brighton desperately struggled to finish chances even though they were able to enjoy nearly all counter attacking as clubs do not bunker in vs Brighton & still Potter has No answers Boehly has no exp running any type of Pro team - he is an investor in the Dodgers & Lakers & has Zero say in operations..... Marx Walter runs the Dodgers & that's why Walter's name was added to the Chelsea bid - to add weight b/c Boehly did not have enough Boehly handed Potter a 60M contract for 5 yrs is dumb & you comparing Chelsea to the Tampa Rays & Oakland Athletics - 2 broke teams that win nothing & expect to win nothing is even more dumb but the funniest thing you said was make Chelsea more like those joke franchises would be a more efficient club model Even comparing Chelsea to the Dodgers is laughable - bc the Dodgers have by far the highest payroll in baseball - so much for analytics right...... they buy the best - as all top clubs do........ but the Dodgers have just ONE Trophy since Walters took over 10+ years ago One Trophy at Chelsea in 2 or 3 yrs will get you run out of the country Finally. City were proven to be cheating & suspended by UEFA for 2 yrs in 2022 & 2023 - how do you not remember this? Maybe b/c you are too busy fantasizing that you can read Boehly's mind...... But City were suspended & in a Brilliant move I will Always respect City threatened to put their Lawyers on exposing UEFA's crimes & they immediately allowed an appeal to change the suspension to a fine I hope you forgive me for the length, but you made so many bone headed unsubstantiated points it requires time to correct them w/ facts..... So finally, I expect Potter will be gone by Spring but he'll be rich w/ Brainless Boehly's cash & it wont damage his reputation b/c Boehly is proving himself to be the typical American simpleton who thinks he can use "Soccer" as he calls it to make him into a celebrity that people will forgive Potter for failing at Chelsea And after the Chelsea fan base realizes he's more Sarri then Pep & drives him out they will turn their anger on Boehly & this is when it will truly grow ugly

There's a reason why not a lot of clubs in the upper tiers of the Premier League (or even in the lower half) tend to take a punt on a young British manager. And it has nothing to do with a bias against youth or britishness. Look at all the young British coaches struggling or recently fired in the Premier League. Hell Howe and Dyche were both fired recently. Clubs at the top are looking for innovative coaches bringing fresh insight while struggling clubs are mainly looking for a safe bet to keep them up. Potter is such an outlier among young British coaches because he actually went abroad and opened himself to unconventional ideas (the kind that a Sam Allardyce would roll his eyes at). Coaches shouldn't get a big chance just because they are young and British, or a Chelsea or Liverpool legend. It should be on merit.

TT's doom came from his creative players that lack vision. Some times when chelsea were attacking, i saw him frustrated because the attacking mid was late to pass the ball, causing the 'hole' created to be closed again. Well, good luck with that, Potter!

One thing Chelsea would definitely improve in is ball possession and player on field rotation and yes the final third problems would still be there. But give the man some time and he'll create a really balanced team. Good thing Chelsea is already used to playing 3 at the back so it'll probably be easy for them to adapt Potter's way middle of the season. Potter is the next big manager. Don't worry Chelsea fans you're gonna see some beautiful football soon.

Something that can be overlooked is a managers training sessions. I think TT has a great mind for the game, but the more I watched his training sessions something really stuck out that showed on the pitch numerous times on the pitch. TT was very adamant on playing narrow in training sessions and you would see the longer we stayed with TT the more the wingbacks would tuck inside instead of staying wide and attacking the touchline to create more space for the front 3. That narrowness imo really effected players abilities to create 1v1 situations in the attacking third

Good analysis. But do you have any examples of how he solves the problem of a low block which Chelsea meet all the time? Its only against other top teams that we encounter more balanced opponent tactics - and since Fabregas left we have had no playmaker who can pick a medium length pass to that effect. RLC is probably the only one with it in his locker if he could be encouraged to be more adventurous..

Potter will have a difficult time getting our players to be able to trap a ball or not have their second touch be a tackle (Sterling). He will also find it difficult to get them to play with their head up when in possession (Mount) or have an ability to play out of the press (Jorgi). Additionally, he will find it difficult to get our players to press together (all) or to stop ball watching on set pieces (all). He has a massive task ahead of him and I wish him luck, but **he will need several transfer windows** to sort the issues at Chelsea as the problems are not tactical, but rather personnel based.

Being sacked by Chelsea isn't particularly damaging to your career. Ancelotti, Villas-Boas, Benitez, Mourinho, Conte, Sarri and Lampard all found good jobs not long after leaving Chelsea, and whenever the next time a European giant dismisses their head coach happens to be, you can bet that Tuchel will be right in the frame. He'll also get a belting pay raise, inherit a well-balanced squad stacked with exceptionally talented young players, a team that already plays quite similarly to his Brighton team, and the most productive academy in the world. Why would he turn it down? Opportunities like this are few and far between. If his Brighton team had had a rocky couple of months this autumn, he might never again have got the chance to take over a club the size of Chelsea.

Pro active and reactive is something that people don’t bring up often. Right now in the Prem it’s soo hard to be proactive like man city,Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal would be some of the caliber of proactive focused sides. Meanwhile high efficiency reactive sides like Man U and Spurs can really punish the big proactive sides which can also lead to trouble to the lower sides in the prem.

I like Graham Potter and if it goes well I think Chelsea have a manager for the long term. However, Potter’s greatest challenge will be man management of bigger egos than he’s seen before. There might be some players in that Chelsea squad who aren’t happy to do the work that the system requires so how does he navigate that? He’s gonna have players there that prefer to play a certain way because they were bought by different managers. Plus the structure above him looks a little shaky compared to how stable Brighton’s is. I do hope he can progress to becoming England manager some day though.

One thing that I have felt about Tuchel's chelsea is the conservatism in possession and attack, the strikers have hardly combined together for a set of games. We have always been bailed out by the exceptional Reece James and Chilwell at wingback. Brighton's attack although not clicking looks like they know where their next pass is, this is from a limited set of games i have seen. Potter will have to fix the defence which looks like a collection of individuals and not a team like it was with Rudiger. There will be growing pains whether boehly/fans will have patience, remains to be seen.

Graham Potter is well suited to handle the big ego's in Chelsea. Why? He's an extremely well grounded individual who's not afraid of thinking out of the box. In Sweden he's held in the highest regard due to the way he made Östersund into a successful team and more specificlly, how he integrated "problem players" or players from "problem areas" fully integrated into the team and developed them. He has a university exam in sociologi and leadership, he's very secure in himself and his ability.

I don't think the choice of Potter is results oriented in the way it is explained in this video. They said both when Tüchel joined, and when he got sacked, and again when Potter got hired, that they want a manager that can control the entirety of their Football side, from youth up to main team and how they practice and train on the day-to-day work Considering they go for Mauricio Pochettino for main coach I am fairly certain Potter mainly will start with structure and get a main-line working order for all various parts of the club!

I think the big difference between Potter and Tuchel, rather than the tactics they use is their brilliance, I'd call Tuchel one of the best tactical managers in the world, whereas I'd call Potter a manager who first and foremost is a man manager, I think that's where he gets the positional flexibility out of his players from, the emotional intelligence, taking the player as a person, and team cohesion stuff is where he looks like he's better than Tuchel.

In the two Brighton games with Chelsea last season, the Seagulls created far more chances and tactically outmanoeuvred the more illustrious Blues both times. Should have been two Brighton wins (rather than two 1-1s) except they failed to put away the gilt-edged chances. I hadn't seen Tuchel so rattled before. From the refreshing and delightful demeanour when he started, TT cut a dejected and tetchy figure. On paper, Chelsea had the better players, but Potter was getting more out of the Brighton players than Tuchel was with his much bigger names.

The more I look into Potter's tactics and philosophy the less confident I am that he will be able to solve Chelsea's issues. Tuchel and Potter's playstyles are remarkably similar. This begs the question of how will Potter deal with Chelsea's creativity issues, especially considering that at Chelsea almost every team you play against will be in a low block while at Brighton teams would try to win the ball back creating that space in behind the defense. I don't think the creativity issue is a simple fix. Tuchel had some of the best attacks at Dortmund and PSG so it's not like he's a defensive manager and with more freedom, the players will do better. I'm not too confident that Chelsea will actually improve (other than the typical new manager bounce).

If you look at Graham Potter's setup this season, you'll notice he plays a 3-5-2 with his wing backs acting more as inverted wingers. Trossard is his left wing back but he is right footed, and March is his right wing back but is left footed. This does make me wonder what the future holds for Chillwell and Reece James. Also, Cucurella played as a left sided center back for the majority of last season. Seeing as Chelsea don't have a left footed center back in the first team, expect Cucurella to take up that role too. That leaves two spots likely to be filled by Silva and Koulibaly. Fofana was bought for so much money to sit on the bench. Worrying times for him too.
