Interesting take. I had some similar observation during that dreadful first half. It looks quite 4-4-2 to my eye, and there was an absence of refinement in their tactical approach, almost going man for man all over the pitch, and hoping to overturn Southampton by the sheer quality Chelsea players have over their counterpart. It might have worked the other day, but the state of Chelsea was so fragile, and they were on the backfoot from Minute-one.
@arpansagar6453 Жыл бұрын
The problem is the sheer lack of squad harmony. It's something that happens when you don't have a lot of vocal leaders and instead of grooming academy youngsters you decide to bring in a dozen new players which combined with a completely new project manager is a not a good mix. Honestly feel like they should've bought experienced players (23-27) instead of this random mish mash of young attackers.

Our shape when we have the ball is so basic and it makes our build up so crap. Why are our full backs in line with our CBs in possession? Why is Enzo isolated in the middle? I dunno why we have gone away from the back 3. It’s the best formation for the squad. Tuchel realised that and went straight to a back 3. Potter main system was exactly that at Brighton, so why is he deviating from it?
@arpansagar6453 Жыл бұрын
@@newrecruit100 they mentioned the reason why I guess. Potter plays a fluid system and the back three should've worked but the players probably didn't respond. As for Enzo, I think that's by design ( like a single pivot). They're highly disorganized for sure but it's not just Potter s issue tbh. He's shown that he can coach players that are much worse in terms of ability. It's not as if there's no plan, sometimes players just don't respond to it and that's a cultural issue. Honestly, he needs a core group of leaders. Any good team has that but at Chelsea you'd be hard pressed to find it. Azpi rarely plays and without him there's 0 leadership on the pitch let alone off the pitch.

Totally agree. I’m willing to lose a few more games and let him work it out. He inherited a disjointed team of players that even Tuchel was struggling with towards the end of his tenure. Ppl seem to forget that there were already fans asking for Tuchel to go towards the end. Because of the sanctions that were imposed we couldnt buy early in summer and eventually made knee jerk buys like cucurella, Koulibaly Aubameyang. We then had a series of injuries to chillwell, James, Forfana, Sterling, Pulasic, and RLC. Who let’s face it not all have returned to their full fitness. James doesn’t look like he’s playing back to 100% yet. Potters now been given a load of new players who have just come from different leagues, countries, personalities and playing systems. And we’re all expected for all these new players to hit the ground running…. Get real ppl. It ain’t going to happen for some time. Most managers need a whole close season plus half a season just to get a team playing to his way…. It happened at Forrest with Steve Cooper. Too many players at once and he’d struggled but he’s slowing turning it around. As much as Abramovich gave us huge silverware the constant hiring and firing of managers has caught up with us and we still have players who played under Di Matteo. That was 8 managers ago… crazy! And even if they sack Potter. Who’ll will replace him…. Some ppl are saying Tuchel? The same guy who back in September I was reading plenty of fans saying he’s ‘gotta go’. I wish real fans would back their team through thick and thin and show support for any manager.

My issue with XG/XA is that it's become a measuring stick to beat/support players/teams, and you can pretty much get them to say anything you want. Striker Z hasn't hit his XG? Well, he's either just having a bad run of form, or he's not good enough to put away changes he should be able to. And this depends on the narrative the person wants to tell. He’s clearly a great coach, but not an elite one. That for me is the simple difference. As a Chelsea fan, I’m used to seeing elite mangers come and go. I’d LOVE to see a homegrown coach succeed here. And I also know, having an elite coach doesn’t always work out. There’s no guarantee of success… but my word, there’s a much bigger chance, right? With Potter, it feels he’ll fall into the category of a “nearly world class” manager. The ones like Moyes, Rodgers, Martinez, Redknapp (just a few off top of my head) who we all respect, acknowledge they’ve done a great job wherever they go but seem to lack whatever is needed at the very, very top. Chelsea is an elite club. It needs an elite coach. Especially now with all these new players in, the level of talent is incredible rn. He lacks an aura that I’d associate with a Chelsea coach. I appreciate that might sound weird. A few more of these performances, and I think he’s done. I hope he can turn it around, but I have little faith.

Any coach coming into Chelsea had the worst possible job to come into. Hes been at the club for 5 months. Realistically his time with the majority of players is significantly less than that though. The ripple effect from the sanctions has been huge with no club structure for half a season and limited time to really work with players because of an international break before the world cup, massive fixture congestion, then the world cup, then the worst injury crisis the clubs faced yet. For the last few months theres been very limited tactical flexibility because of the injuries. He was moving things around but not because be had a choice to move things in ways that would be optimal for results. He just had to bend the team around what was available and was having to pull players out of the academy clearly before they were really ready for 1st team football. Now there are options but the cohesion needs far more time than hes had to develop. Half the squad has been injured for half the time hes been at the club. You have a player like Wesley Fofana coming back that has as many games played for Chelsea as the January signings. Then half the available squad was bought in January. Thats 7 players hes only had since January to really work with on the pitch. Then you've still got a load of other injured players gradually making their way back that hes not had the chance to work with much or at all in the case of Kante. Some of these players under Potter will be lucky to have had a months worth of his coaching in the 5 months Potter has been in.

Sounds to me like he's been given all these players but didn't really ask for them,and is fumbling desperately to find a way to get the best out of them in any way he can,rather than have a clear identity and have the players fit that system. He inherited a poor squad flirting with relegation, so it's to be expected that his win percentage at Brighton was poor, especially in his first 2 seasons. One thing adjacent to one of your point here: the reason potter plays in a more traditional set up, without the early flexibility, could be that he has tons of new players and wants them to gel before trying to get them playing with more fluidity. However it is sort of difficult to do when you have 31 players in your squad. If potter stays on, I do believe following a summer squad trim, Chelsea will still have difficulties for a few weeks because the real work will start then

I think it’s fair to say that Potter can be both a good coach (which he is) but also he isn’t good enough for Chelsea (which he isn’t.) Not one player has improved for working under him, and arguably some have regressed. His “achievements” at Brighton were over egged, when in reality he did less than someone like Michael Laudrup did with Swansea.

i am a chelsea fan. and having seen chelsea was absolutely destroyed by brighton under de zerbi, i think people already spotted that potter's flexibilty philosophy has so many weaknesses. to be honest i think he and the management staff should've already seen this happening by the abysmal form before the world cup. i don't know if potter already knew that his flexibilty didn't work or not, but in my optimism (or delusional) view, he knew but he can't solve the tactical problem and weaknesses due to injury. so when the winter transfer window is closed and many quality players are brought in, potter change his philosphy to be more standard one it takes time for this fundamental change to work but he is running out of time. both fans and boehly should expect some improvements in form sooner

When the underlying numbers were so bad compared to the previous two managers, any modest improvement is an upward trajectory. The sad reality though is the more simple the tactic Potter uses, the less coaching influence he has on the game and the more he has to rely on player talent to carry him because he’s not a fiery motivator. He’s not an Ancelotti or Mourinho who can rely on talented players to carry out a simple vision. Nor does he have the gravitas to carry a culture change at Chelsea. Every one pointing at Arteta as an example of sticking with needs to remember 1) Arteta won the FA Cup his first season, 2) came from a team who won the EPL, 3) has a clear vision of wanting to develop monsters and a history of doing that. Potter has a history of middling performances, no trophies of note, and developing underperformance. If his tactical nous was so crucial for Brighton’s success under him, why are they doing better after he left? Why are their players so sought after by other clubs? Were we all wrong and he was actually holding back a good side? Maybe. Everyday he’s there he looks more like Niko Kovic at Bayern than Julian Nagglesmann.

The English has no top coach.... Don't expect Potter to be one. Potter is a midtable coach.... Jumping from Brighton to Chelsea is a big ask, similar to Lampard jumping from Derby to Chelsea... Chelsea is not a small club, don't get a small coach to lead them. There are elite coaches....there are midtable coaches.. Don't force Potter to become elite. To be a top and elite coach is much more than playing good football which is what Potter has done in Swansea and Brighton.... At Brighton, here and there, he got wins against Arsenal, City, Liverpool, Tottenham... But you have to check these matches to know the situations around it.... Even at Brighton he went about 8 games winless run several times, but no one cared because it's Brighton....

It’s mind numbing to see someone try to justify Potter keeping his job after 6 months of poor results. He has been given every excuse in the book, some valid some not but no amount of statistics can justify keeping him on at this point because the results are not coming. Losing at home to 20th placed mangerless Southampton convincingly is unforgivable. This team had not kept a clean sheet in 26 games. Forest, Fulham, 4-1 to Brighton! 2 wins in the last 15 games?! Even when we win we don’t look convincing. I don’t expect Chelsea to win ever game but atleast show some fight. With potter in charge we are toothless. The players have just been given a day off instead of training today, such a weak mentality after a disappointing loss. My question is what does success under potter even look like? Top 4 (which should be the bare minimum), an FA cup in the next couple years? Right now it’s avoiding slipping into the bottom half of the table. What a joke. I’m not sure if the guy in the video even watches Chelsea. Azpi over Reece James in our best line up? Mount has been terrible all season yet he makes our best line up? POTTER OUT. He has lost the fans and soon will lose the players.

There’s a lot of tactics missing here which I’ll breakdown 1. Potter is coaching this side like a mid table team. Meaning when we defend we sit very far back with our CMs at the top of our box, and our wingers almost playing as a wingback. Issue with this is we are Chelsea a so called big club. 95% of the teams we play aren’t going to treat us like a mid table team when attacking us, they are going to treat us like a top team. While we defend with 9-10 players behind the ball, the opposing team is only attacking with 5-7 players. Great in terms of we don’t give up loads of chances but we have no ability to quickly get on the front foot and counter attack bc teams will always have the numbers against us when trying to progress the ball forward, which leads to a lot of sideways and backwards passes that allow the other team to drop and set up defensively against us. 2. Once again we are attacking like a mid table side. Under Potter even with Reece back in the food our fullbacks aren’t nearly getting high enough and usually one stays back while the other defends. Meaning we only usually attack with 5-6 players against teams who have 9-10 behind the ball. Which doesn’t allow us to create 1v1s and never any overload situations due to slow build up play. If Potter wants to see a turn around he has to start taking risks and trust the players bc 95% of the teams Chelsea face they will have the better quality of the players. The 4-2-3-1 system is a great formation when issued properly. If you are worried about conceding that fine, but there’s much better ways in defending while attacking that would help the team greatly and the main two options are 1. Have both fullbacks push up high and wide and play as wingers, the RM and LM tuck in and play as attacking mids, while the two CBs and CMs hold to give cover. That will allow a CM to cover the wide area if the ball is played out and still give you a CM holding the middle with two CBs. Shape will look like a 2-2-3-2-1. 2. Have one fullback and CM hold, while the other CM and fullback push forward. You get the same numbers going forward but just in a different shape now where the team looks like a 3-1-4-2. If Potter wants to succeed at Chelsea he has to change his mentality on how they approach game, meaning you think about dominating the game and creating loads of chances as the first and most important aspect, then possession, then defending. Right now it’s completely opposite where we think about defending first, then possession, then creating chances which is not a winning mentality but getting results mentality meaning a lot for 0-0, 1-1, 1-0 etc
@bgrg Жыл бұрын
Top 4 was going to be a struggle when the owners decided to bring Potter into the club. It was obvious from the start that Potter was going to need more time. It didn't help that players like Kante, Kovacic, James and Chilwell has all been missing because of injuries. Players like RLC or whoever comes into fill in for these players just aren't good enough and as good as Tuchel is, even he struggled in absence of these players. The new set of players look very exciting to watch and just shows the mediocracy Chelsea has had these past few years. Westham first half and Dortmund were positive except for the result. Partly because the underlying problem of players not being able to put the ball in the net still exists. I thought Potter should have won the Southampton game. Especially since they are bottom of the league. But its very clear now that the owners are willing to give Potter more time than the fans are willing to and rightly so I think. Although personally, that Southampton loss was inexcusable. Prior to the Southampton game, I felt he had good reasons for the way the team has performed so far. imvho.

@@bgrg I actually don’t care too much about points when new managers come, just style of play. I’ll put it like this, when Klopp first game to Liverpool they finished 8th that season, but you could see the amazing football they played but just needed better players on both sides of the ball to get better results, especially defensively. I mean he got that side playing expansive attacking football that got you out of your seat with way less talent than we have in our roster. Too much tinkering didn't go well for a former Chelsea manager. Statistics are fine on paper, but you need confidence to be successful, and that confidence comes from a manager that makes the players and fans believe that they are going to win, not one that accepts defeat philosophically. However, I could be more philosophical about defeats if I was paid the fortune that Potter is getting.

Yes he’s out of his depth. No he won’t get sack because TB needs a docile employee. TB knows GP needs Chelsea, Chelsea doesn’t need GP; GP has no leverage. TB is not about creating a winning team. It’s about pumping valuations until he can flip the club for a massive profit, or leverage the club’s name to take out loans. Look at United, they’ve hardly won anything but yet remain one of the most commercially lucrative clubs. TB knows that winning trophies is just a nice to have. Especially so because it’s an expensive endeavour. Folks in the money game aren’t going to hinge upon how many trophies are there when valuating the club. It’s just not a significant determinant. It’s not a monetary asset because you can’t sell your trophies. What you can sell is players. You can see where TB has put his attention by looking at the money. The squad put together by TT is well strong enough. Surely it’s a stretch to think GP’s standards are so far beyond TT and what he can work with. There was no need for a “rebuild”. The spending spree is not about a squad rebuilds as much as it’s packing in hype (just look at who they’ve gone for). If trophies did matter, why would FP and co push for a non competitive ESL? If it were about testing one’s mantle, you won’t be fearful of entering the ring with the best. These folks just want more money. As long as there are players willing to sign to TB’s CFC for a fat pay cheque, it will keep TB’s plan going towards a fat exit. Trophies, wins are irrelevant. If it happens, great. TB could care less what comes of CFC once he gets his fat ROI.

Just accept it, Graham Potter is not an elite tactician. No structure and zero understanding of positional play which is essential to having a team create the best of chances and play efficient football in the modern game hence why he's struggling. Not surprising though because he has an "English" understanding of the game unlike Spanish or German coaches and even Dutch. No concept of a rest defence, positional play, stretching the opponents to create space, side overload and switches and add to that his defensive incapabilities. The English football education system is appalling. The only reason he's still at the helm is because he is English and nothing else. Any other manager from a different nationality would've been sacked by now. This English ego has to go. They simply don't produce coaches that are good enough especially for the modern game.

Boehly / Clearlake Cap have brought a private equity operating style to the Premier League. This means Boehly / Clearlake need to deliver ~20% ROI (I made up the number, but it’s a large number to attract investors no matter what) annually to investors. The typical PE investment period is 4 - 6 years with year 1 being the re-organization year, with mediocre returns. Year 2 and beyond are when superior results are expected. Private equity firms will challenge orthodoxy when they sees an opportunity. Thus the long contracts with young stars - in - the - making. Potter has a history of developing players, too. Potter has had to rebuild essentially from scratch mid - season and with players who likely won’t be around next year (e.g. Ziyech, Pulisic, Jorginho). I agree with Tifo’s analysis. It indicates that Boehly’s / Clearlake’s strategy is working. They are building for the future, and will earn substantial royalties once the team achieves pre - eminence again.
