Yeah, one of the things that is bugging me most about Nintendo lately is how they pick and choose who to go after. As you said, they didn't care about Craftopia. There are so many they don't care about. They go after the successful ones, i.e. Palworld. And this is coming from a Nintendo fangirl, although I'm not sure I can still honestly call myself that at this point 😞

I wouldn’t necessarily say I was ever a Nintendo fanboy since I play Xbox mostly, but Pokèmon holds a special place in my heart for being such a huge part of my childhood and the Smash games have been some of my favorites since I was young. It had the mechanics before the patents. Craftopia released in 2020, a year before the patent in 2021 and 2 years before PLA's release in 2022. Has nothing to do with if they care about craftopia or not. The fact is is that pocketpair has been using this capture mechanic for longer than pokemon, so they shouldn't be able to sue pocketpair at all.

They did for both accounts. The first time was that their "Legends Arceus Mechanics Patent" was filed in _DECEMBER_ of 2021. Palworld briefly released in _JUNE_ of 2021, only being taken down a few hours later to change to Unreal Engine 5. There was a Half-year's difference between the Arceus Mechanic's Patent, and the release of Palworld.

Even if the GTA5 mod is a mod, it still counts as prior art, and can therefore be used against Nintendo's patent claims. Even if it doesn't, there are still examples from past games that existed before they were filed. Since these patent claims are so broad, Pocketpair does have a good chance at winning this case.

@@heapofrocks If the GTA5 mod is proven to be prior art, then Pocketpair can use it to refute Nintendo's claims over the first patent. Plus, Palworld has its own ways of capturing Pals aside from throwing a Pal Sphere; you can fire them from weapons, and you can even capture people. Although it appears similar, it's distinctive enough to challenge Nintendo's claims. Plus, since the patent is so broad, there's a possibility other monster-capturing games could be included.

If terraria got palworld raids that would be crazy. I just don't think it fits much with the vanilla experience, but it's possible, and if they build a framework for extra dimensions then that'll do a lot for the modding scene, which has always had to find workarounds. I think some pal pets, accessories, and an event would be cool. (They better give us Chillet!) As for the palworld side I can think of nothing better than a few boss fights, maybe even something unique like fighting the terrarian (player character) with all sorts of weapons. Pal skins would be really nice, but I'd really love it if they add terraria weapons like the night's edge, minishark, and maybe an enchanted sword in a hidden sword shrine. I doubt they'd do armor, but if they do I hope they add molten armor. I want to see how it'd look in palworld. An NPC like the guide would also be kinda cool to see in palworld. You could even "invite" him to live at your base ^^

From what I have heard about it, Japan is a First-to-File not a First-to-Demonstrate patent system so unless the GTA mod filed for that mechanic in Japan it might not matter in Japanese courts. Internationally however Palworld shouldn't have any issue. The Blue-green Faleris morph is almost certainly Faleris Aqua and if the stats from the regular are to be transferred over we can expect to see level 3 Watering and level 3 Transporting with a fast fly speed and a partner skill reading "Can be ridden as a flying mount. While fighting together, Fire Pals drop more items when defeated". If its not Faleris Aqua it will be Cryst but with all the ice pals already in the game I'm doubtful the devs would do that. I'm stoked for it as Faleris is pretty easy to breed to in-game, has endgame stat totals, and with Watering 3 will help cover a niche for mid-game waterers that currently is only filled by Azurobe before you breed up your Jorm. this update is going to be pretty sick.

Yeah no Minecraft has Pixalmon starting back in 2013 and its still going strong and being a pokemon fan mod had this exact stuff in, open world pokemon, throwing balls to capture or starting a battle. Why the heck is this GTA mod that don't even capture pokemon, they are just picked up and viewed as grenades going to somehow 'save' palworld when there have been plenty of other games, and pokemon fan games and mods that have existed far longer? That makes zero sense.

Because of how broad the wording of the patents are. They literally patent throwing a object in an open world environment at a creature and affecting it. It doesn't mention capturing, balls, or even monsters specifically. They also patent throwing a "battle character", which I'm still hoping is a mistranslation because no way they're being that general without an agenda, and not just against palworld

I want Japanese style roof and also railing. Better head gears for each Armors and new Armors+Guns. Better looking walls, better looking windows types for each walls. more food types, more hairs and faces, more fast flying mounts like Jet Dragon speed. the ability to sit down in chairs, use things in the bathroom like sinks,toilet, baths and shower. Better emote, go fishing and swim underwater.

Ark Survival Evolved has a cryo ball item that lets you catch and store your creature. Also you can ride them. Ark has been out way longer than legends Arceus and I dont see anyone bringing this up.

It's not an open world creature capture mechanic because they must already be tamed to use the cryopods. If I could throw a cryopod at a theri and not have to sit there while it tamed for 45 minutes, I might go back to Ark 🤣

This has been available as a mod on minecraft for over a decade, surpassing GTA as far as a timeline of events goes. No entity has the right to patent mechanics, its like yahtzee saying they have the only rights to throw dice. I believe these mechanics were used in games, even earlier than that. Can't remember the name of the game, I remember doing these types of things in games 30+ years ago.

The pal launcher should be safe tbh, since another mod added the SAME functions long before the Nintendo patents or GTA mod. Specifically the Safari Net Launcher from... The Minefactory Reloaded mod for Minecraft, added to the mod in... 2013 or earlier. 3 years before the GTA mod.

Mods do not count unless they have a patent. They do not own the rights to a game. Unless there is some kind of contract that names them as the creator of the mod/mechanic. That doesn't happen in most cases. Just ban nintendo and any pokemon game/product. nintendo is crap for doing what they are doing. Nintendo is just super mad that an indy company made a pokemon type game way better than they ever had or will.

The odds that the court case is over before the Switch is out are extremely slim. It could be years before it's concluded. And even if Nintendo wins, which they probably will "win" many of their points, they won't destroy Pocket Pair. They have too many backers and have made enough money to ride this out. There will be more gameplay changes, I'm sure, but other than taking money, all they can do is block the sale in Japan. 🫤

My disdain and dislike for Nintendo at this point is on par with Rayquaza's for Deoxys. Malignant Nintendo. Unfortunately, you can, that's what patents are, we'll not just game mechanics, patents cover all fields, however patents are suppose to be specific, most the time very generic patents like the ones nintendos are trying to use are denied because they are two broad, but yes there are many game mechanics that are patented, however, I can't create a game mechanic, then you patented it, and then you sue me, any use of things patented prior to the patent are grandfathered in.
