Besides that, the two groups are not even comparable by age, race or smoking. Also the entire study was based on "dietary recall on two 24 hour recall days". And by using the 12-16hr group as reference they have hidden the P-value for that groups results.

Some scientists are getting too involved in juggling numbers, they forget about real world. If that statistic finding was true, we would have seen fasting people or Muslims during Ramadan or generally people restricting calories trying to loose some weight,-dropping dead like flies or hospitals full of those people. This is not happening, it is not real. Although the data is the data, they should look where the error was introduced into the data set to give such an odd result. Perhaps this data tell some other connection they missed in questionnaire, the one that closely related to the e group of intermittent fasting people. Are they more dehydrated? Do they bing eating at the end of the day to the point eyes rolled out. Finding this link will help people to loose weight safely, it is well known restricting calories without proper approach may cause harm to people with certain chronic illnesses

I'm 70 years old and I have been practicing intermittent fasting for 16 plus hours every day for about 6 years now, and I never felt better. I don't believe any of all that garbage, all is to scare people, the more people stuffed their mouth with food the more fatter they get and the more health problems, and that of course benefits a lot of rich people that of course they want to get more and more. Thanks so much for this video, you were on point 👍

You had me at six sigma master black belt and regression analysis. 😂 You mentioned Harvard. This is the same school that has been long known for unethical behavior such as research dishonesty and falsification of data (can you say, Ansel Keys?). Now they're embroiled in a bribery scandal. But I digress. Your analysis was spot on. I especially appreciated the statistical geek speak. 😂 The other old saying you could have added was, "When all else fail, manipulate the data."

THANK YOU!!!! I am tired of people cherry picking data to push their agenda. Instead of giving all the data or looking at all the factors relevant, they focus on just what would push their agenda. Smoking, physical activity, what they were eating, family medical history are extremely relevant. 2 interviews in 8-17 years!!! You pointed out just how UNSCIENTIFIC this "study" is. Wonderful question about why the eliminated SOOOOOO many participants. I just LOVE it when people lecture about what in their opinion is wrong with other people's lives instead of focusing their own.

I’m glad you addressed this study for people, Steve, and I hope they listen. I taught research methods and statistics at a college for 30 years, and like you, I’d want people to know that they ought not to pay much attention to it. I’m glad the students (because that’s what they were-or I miss my guess) did the study, but I hope they keep going and have the equipment to do a real experimental study. This study is not that. First of all, it’s a poster, which means that it (a) either does not have sufficiently good results to get published (maybe ever), or (b) it’s preliminary and part of a bigger study or ongoing research. In short, it’s some little finding that was sufficient to help a beginning researcher get a notch in his or her belt. Second, and much more importantly, it’s essentially correlational (even though it “looks” like an experiment). You cannot draw inferences about causation from a correlational study. The researchers merely measured. The likelihood is that the people in their particular study were already coronary-prone. (I see, looking back, that you pointed that out in the comments.) And that makes perfect sense, since a lot of people who fast are doing it to lose weight! I would not expect any other finding, and it certainly would not prevent me from fasting. Let’s see some studies on the benefits of fasting-some good studies-and see who wins. I wish people, especially in the media, which loves to report this kind of stuff, would learn how research really works, and how to report it. (I wish everyone understood research methods!) I enjoyed hearing about your background, too-I suspected you did work like you described. It’s nice to hear the details. One last thing-looking at the abstract, it seemed to me that the researchers are not necessarily condemning fasting. Their conclusion seems to be, rather, that the 16:8 fasting schedule may not be sufficient. But it’s moot, if the study isn’t experimental.

From what I have heard previously the study looks at how people eat over many years... in the past BEFORE intermittent fasting was a thing. The people were asked when and how often they ate over that period. No other questions were asked... not WHAT they ate, whether they smoked, drank or used illicit drugs... Well I know that alcoholics I know eat rarely, they mostly drink their food... same with illicit drug users... Neither do people who work 12-16 hours a day... This "study" appears to be written in order to get names into publication so they do not lose funding...

Thank you for pointing out the statistics on the smokers in the study. I worked as an RN on a cardiothoracic surgery unit smf we would tell the patients that if they failed to quit smoking they would likely end up on the OR table having a second bypass surgery within five years. I actually did have a patient who had a triple bypass and two years later he was back and had a double bypass....he failed to quit smoking. The AHA is well versed in this and I have a theory that there are so many people reaping the benefits of the Keto and Carnivore lifestyles that they're losing customers. Afterall, cardiac surgery is big business. I love that there are MDs like Dr. Philip Ovedia who promote prevention instead of medicines and surgery.

(I am embarrassed that Harvard and UMass (my Alma Mater- though not the Lowell campus) would have their institutions associated with this "study".) And, why, knowing that the media will run with a story that is sensational, even if not strictly factual, would the AHA publish these "findings", even with the caveat that it wasn't coming from them? Indeed, I am now armed to refute the arguments of those who have made conclusions based on what they have seen in the media. For that, Steve, I thank you. I cannot afford to stop IM now. It sounds like they did adjust the NHANES data for a number of factors like smoking, drinking, education, income, BMI, diet quality score, and quite a few other factors. A channel called Nutrition Made Simple does a really good scientific breakdown of this study for anyone who wants to check it out. For me, the study just doesn't pass the common sense rule and a big part of that goes to your point that the majority of human history we had to be on time restricted eating due to a variety of factors that you mentioned and I will add to your list, often times we just didn't have food readily available all the time.

There are two sources I rely on for thoughtful insights, information, and product reviews related to a ketogenic lifestyle-- you and Thomas DeLauer. Oddly enough when I finished watching this post, Thomas had a similar post pop up on my feed which I plan to watch next. You basically say what I was thinking during your video related to what was being eaten by the participants, peer review, etc. I have a master's degree in a field heavily driven by scientific evidence-based practice which required two statistics courses and reading hundreds of studies each semester for the last three years of study. I'm troubled that information from sources which make dangerous and apparent ersatz assumptions which some people will pay attention to and believe...is just frightening. That being said thank you for your break down of this information, and diligence in bringing some common sense to what I see as attacks on our ketogenic lifestyle. Researchers know this kind of BS gets clicks because keto has blown up since 2015 and anything they can do to pony onto this population for attention is in my mind irresponsible.
