I knew this would start up almost straight away. My parents had one of these for eight years. It never didn't start, never broke down. Dad insisted on oil changes every three thousand miles. They sold well here in Ireland. Were known as the Datsun 140J (1.4 litre) and 160J (1.6 litre). Great cars.

I bought a 1974 Datson B210 brand new right out of the showroom. They told me it had the drive-train of the 1600 and a 1300cc. instead of the 1200cc. Well, I bought the worst damn lemon, ever !!! After 3 rear ends, 2 clutches, and when the transmission went I traded it in for an old Chevy flat glass van, that I drove for years. I only had the Datson for 10 months in 1974 and put 68,000 miles on it. I later found out that they had the 1200 drive train in them and it wasn't strong enough for the more powerful 1300 engine. The only good thing I can say is that, is a strong little engine.

Japanese Imports from the '80s into the mid-90s were some of the best ever made. Mechanically simple but extremely high quality. Long as you keep oil and coolant in them they run a long time. That thing lit off almost immediately. Which is absolutely astounding considering it's condition. I suspect it will move but you mentioned all four drums were locked up there's no way that little engine is going to overcome locked up brakes. I bet it'll drive. You could definitely hear the engine slow down when you went into gear so I'm suspecting it works.

I have experience to support that. My dad had a late 80s-early 90s Nissan Stanza he bought new. It had close to 300,000 miles but ran and looked like a normal car with 100,000 miles. Unfortunately he was driving it late at night across an Ag area and it developed a cooling leak, he filled it once from a ditch and almost made it home but the engine overheated and was shot. Car probably could have made 1/2 million miles easily otherwise.

I owned a Datsun 210 many years ago, and it ha well over 100,000 miles and ran perfectly. I drove it for another 100,000 + miles. The only thing I had to do to it was change the clutch. These cars are bulletproof as long as reg maint is done such as oil change etc.

Back in the early 80s, we would pick up these old Datsuns for $50 or less. My buddy literally bought one for $5...and it ran!. They wouldn't stop, but rusted up bad. I had a 1968 Datsun pickup. It had a 1300 cc straight four. It rusted to pieces but the little engine wouldn't stop running.

Those 210s weren't much to look at, but they were amazing dependable and got really good fuel economy. Pretty sure it's electronic ignition by that era. In my experience most cars were running electronic ignition by '75. And still have a traditional coil. The hei was a chevy thing in the early days.

HInt: on most of the older Datsuns you can remove the plastic clamshell around the ignition and access the switch section by removing 2 Philips screws from the back. Now you can run the ign / starter with a small screwdriver. To remove the wheel lock you can run a hacksaw blade across the fasteners that don't seem to have a head on them. IOW, create a bite for a screwdriver. They were originally bolts with a head that breaks for for anti-theft. BTW, that was electronic ignition with a module inside that plastic cover by the WW fluid.

I bought a 2 tone yellow and brown 1979 datsun pickup sitting in a guys yard for $400 put a battery on it and it fired right up and I drove the wheels off of it. In our family it was affectionately called the mustard wagon. Only thing that ever went wrong with it was the raidiater broke but rain or shine cold or hot I could hit the key and It would start. Mine also souded like a diesel but it was a hole in the exhaust. I wish I'd never gotten rid of it.

My 1st car, B210 (hatchback) 78/79 model. Tough little engine. I ran her with oil light on for 3:4 days. I dogged the crap out of it. Parents went Sunday grocery shopping n I knocked her in neutral and laid a brick on the gas pedal. Poor ole girl screamed for an hour before I heard something go. I was pretty happy with myself thinking I’d get something new n “cool” if it blew up. Brother came home pulled the head went to the garage he worked at and had it running in about 30 minutes. 1 warped push rod. Lol. I drove her another year till I got a job and bought an 86 grand am. She was still running the day I totaled it having some dirt road fun. Drove it home after the crash.

Couldn’t find a single one for sale other than some old adds. My uncle owned a VW/Diesel shop, everyone stripped the VW’s and made dune buggy’s, point is he had a little blue Datsun truck , it was his go to town truck, run up the junk hill and grab an engine truck and his go to church truck. He was driving it until he passed away in the mid 90’s. I bet if can be dug out of the woods it would run with little effort.

That 210 body style seen here replaced the B210. This body style ran from 1979 to 1982. In 1979 it had one year style front end, tail end and interior. For 1980 this is what you got til 1982. I had a 1980 2 door which looks like this one sans the two extra doors. So my guess is 1980/82 model. These cars were notoriously slow. Mine was a 5 speed, so I can imagine what a slug this one is with that automatic transmission transmission.
