To be fair, Opels were pretty good until they became simply rebadged Vauxhalls. Back then, they made it to the Hong Kong market and were noted, which was a great achievement that Skoda, Vauxhall and pretty much every American brand never had. They did a lot better than Rover, Citroen, FIAT and Saab in that competitive market too, because I never saw a Rover outside a picture, and have only heard of SAABs and being sold there in many years of living there, while Citroens and DS's became manager cars due to hopeless sales figures, and FIAT 500s are still stuck in warehouses in the hundreds. I do remember Opels roaming about in the early-mid 2000s though, so they at least made it out there.

I collect Opels... My father was a engineer at Opel and my mother's family owns several dealerships in Bavaria. In 2017 I purchased a 69 coupe that Major in the United States Army bought for his wife to drive while stationed in Germany. They brought it home with them. When I bought it it had 38k. It even had ice cold air installed by the Buick dealership. I drove it 1050 miles home without a single issue.

Opel is part of the automobile history. Here in Brazil its models were made under Chevrolet brand. Remarkable models as Opala, Chevette, Kadett and others, were, during decades, over the Brazilian's prefered automobiles. Most of them can't, even today, figure they were driving an Opel instead a Chevrolet piece of engineering.

I was stationed in Germany 80-85. Had a 72 Opel record 4 door. great car and never had a problem with her. Over the years as I've gone back, I've always rented the newer Opel Diesels. Great cars.

In the late 1960s I had two Opel's, both Kapitan's. One in Germany a 1960 model and one in the UK, a 1959 model with right hand drive. They had 6 volt batteries originally but I converted them both with an extra 6 volt battery for starting power. The '59 model had rounded bodywork which looked like a Chevy. The '60 model had angular bodywork. Loved them both.

Opel was Germany's GM subsidiary. The same thing happened to British Vauxhall and Australian Holden. That one is an Opel Kadett and it's a damn good car!

Vauxhall's version of the Kadett was the Viva. Holden's Torana was based on the Viva. The Torana started with a 1200cc four and grew up into the GTR XU1 variant - with a 3.3litre triple carb six.

I bought a 1970 Opel Kadette LS Fastback, in 1971, it was my first car. Up to that point I borrowed my Dad's work car, on weekends and sometimes during the week. I was in high school and I still rode my 10 speed bike. I loved my car, it was a light blue metallic, with a sloped rear window. I altered the rear seat so I could fold it upward, and pass larger objects from the trunk through the opening. It was a 4 on-the-floor manual shifter, it had mellow humming engine & rack and pinion steering. It was the LS model,...and had some minor upgrades. I bought it in my home town, Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland processed iron ore for steel production, so there were many airborne corrosive pollutants, plus they heavily salted their roads in the winter. That was a lethal mix that contributed to our cars rusting out quickly. Even with undercoating, which was a popular add-on, to any new car. I drove it in high school, for 3 years, then drove it to my college, for 4 more years, and another year in half, then onto graduate school for 2 years. I had to sell it in 1979, because the floor boards had completely rusted out. And the door hinges were also rusted, in such away, that the doors had to be lifted into place, each time. A mechanic gave me $450.00, for it, and that seemed fair.

Those cars were built to be inexpensive, entry level transportation. No frills, no comfort, just a little better than riding the bus. My family had one, purchased new. I remember one day the axle came out of the differential housing in a left turn, with the tire and wheel still attached to the brake drum and axle! That said, it did teach me how to shift gears and lasted quite a few years. It met its demise after 8 years of faithful service when a drunk ran a red light.

Who knows. Sometimes life happens. Maybe the owner had a new kid , or passed away. Or the owner could have had disease or mental health issues. My first car was a 1986 Plymouth Reliant LE (bought in 2016) . I loved that car ..... hated fixing it up all the time. Sold it and got me a 2000 Saturn SL2 so I could learn to drive stick. Boy oh boy, going from OHC to DOHC. Wooowwee. Bring the Power. Haha. This old Opel here has, 60 hp? My old Plymouth I believe had 86 HP and let me tell you.....driving up a steep incline I had the pedal to the floor hopin an prayin she go.

Back when I was a kid, my neighbor had several old cars parked in his field. I loved old cars. So after school I'd drag a battery that I had charged overnight over to my neighbors field and try to start one of the old cars. My neighbor didn't mind and I had a blast. One day I was trying to start a fifties Chrysler, Got it cranking good but it wouldn't start. I was only 11 or so. Well I'm cranking this huge Chrysler and I hear Mr Swan say with a chuckle, "You'll never get that one started".." She's jumped time" ! "Needs a new chain"!! He laughed, I was sad , but I thanked him for letting me mess around with his old cars. Never felt the need to go back after that. lol. I knew I had a lot to learn about the inner workings of an engine. lol.! Next day I delivered his paper as I always did. He gave me a smile. I waved and walked to the next house. Your channel brings me back to those wonderful days so many years ago. Sure miss those days.

Wow! You guys knew them as an Opel Kadett, I knew them as either an HB-model Vauxhall Viva or the first incarnation of the Holden Torana (we could get both of these models from our local GM dealer). In any guise, it's my favourite model of the three that carried the name Viva in the 60s and 70s. There's something about the swoop on the rear quarter panels and the backward rake of the rear panel that always makes me smile. That one doesn't look too bad either. A decent scrub inside and out and she'll go back on the road fine...!

Years ago, I had a friend give me for free an old Opel Record wagon. Those cars came with rectangular headlights but that one had round headlights just stuck into the sockets. Needless to say rough roads could get exciting! LOL!!!🤣 The real interesting thing about that car is that it had a 4spd. in the column. That was truly a fun car to drive.

I used to work on these in the early 70s in ireland. Used to be able to change a clutch in 20 minutes. At high milage the gearbox housing used to wear and the lay shaft would drop too low, end of gearbox. Great little cars though.

But not before having SO much fun trail blazing through the woods and fields around me. in the 70's I had a 69 Rally Sport and a 70 Rally Sport. Had LOTS of fun running the P-I double ss out of them. I know I'm commenting really late. Been laid up awhile and discovered this channel recently, so I'm catching up. Only comment i wanted to make, is i started out of tech school at this Buick dealership. Buick of course is the brand that GM sold Opels through. The dealership owner could have had about any Buick sold to drive, I would imagine. But he just loved the little Opels, he always had an Opel to drive around in. Funny. He was a real down to earth guy.

As an Opel owner myself (owning two of them: a 2001 Astra Convertible and a 2001 Vectra Wagon) i answered the "will it run" question with "yes" even before i started watching the video. They may have their little failures but the Opel Engines, especially the older and smaller ones like the 1.6 or 1.8 engines have their reputation as indestructible, if you change the timing belt regularly.

I bought the same model Opel in 1986 for $100. It was my first car. That one is in better condition than mine was back then. I'm pretty sure mine only had one carb though. The thing had a reputation for not wanting to shut off no matter what position the ley was in.

Yes, they did! And in america it was not sold as the Kadett, rather as simply the 'GM Opel'. I've wanted to get ahold of one to see how they compare to other small cars of their time, namely the Volvo 144, BMW 2002, etc.

@@theinstitute1324 Interesting. My gramps had a later model kadett (C model) but a coupé version with faux leather (which was TERRIBLE on a sunny day!). I think a 1.2l. I still remember the license plate. Those are pretty hard to find nowadays, they all seemed to suffer from poor body work and rusted as you watched. I mostly remember it as a very basic gets-the-job-done type of car, but certainly a step up from your beetles etc.

Opel sold many car-lines in the US from the early 1960-ies on. most of them under the Opel-label by Buick-dealers, some renamed as Buick, but GM had no luck with selling Opel-Limousines there. one popular car was the Opel 1900 around the 1970-ies, in central-Europe known as "Ascona-A". best known car was the Opel GT. more than 50% of the GT which were built are sold to the US, nicknamed "Baby-Corvette".

That's a funny mix. It's got the 1100cc "SR" double Solex carb (PDSI-T manual chocke IIRC) - but the long gear lever (non-Sport) gearbox along with the total basic instruments. Not even a clock given. The engine was rated 60 DIN-hp and was also used in the entry-level Opel GT 1100. Alternator is missing.

Back in 1976 my brother in law was considering buying one just like this, only thing was the rear axle was toast, the owner had a rear axle from an early Nova to go in it but for some reason he didn't buy it,was a nice little car though,his uncles owned several of the Rallye models and I think one wagon, what hurt them most was the branding of an Izuzu as an Opel starting in 1976.
