As others have said, always put some atf or marvel mystery oil in the cylinders and let it soak before turning it over it all. It's the best chance of saving the rings.

Always ...Always.... Always... when a motor has been sitting even a year ,you MUST take the sparkplugs out and put some type of oil into the plug holes, and then try and turn the motor over with the plugs out, first by HAND,then by using a wrench on the big nut on the harmonic balancer..You MUST get the motor turning over freely before trying to start it...and always check for spark before seriously trying to start it.

I had a 71 Mach 1 when I was young 351 Cleveland put a 429 Cobra Jet in it. It was badass. I'm 70 years old would like to have 1 again. One Last Ride LOL

Sounds like the rings are stuck pour a little oil down the cylinders to help free them up. They'll free up when you get the motor to fire and run. Also a tip for starting without a key. Look for the S on your starter relay and run a wire ot touch screwdriver to the positive battery terminal on the relay or the battery post itself. Also if without a key run a wire from the positive post on the coil to the positive terminal on the battery and it will run your coil Thus allowing you to fire the motor up but it will draw of the battery only so be prepared to charge it if you run it too long like that. You didn’t change oil - this oil have 20-25. Change him it is first what we should do after long stoppage. Additionally into the cylinders by plugs socket we need injection WD40 or ON. P.S. Your movies are great. Best Regards from Poland.

Growing up,one of my friend's older brothers had one nearly identical to that Mustang,it had a 351 Cleveland. One day we were riding our bikes on a dirt road with some huge mud puddles about 10in deep. He tried to go fast through this huge puddle and get us soaking wet. Instead it got out of control and smashed down the neighbor's fence. 🤣🤣

Hope you are able to get her running. I would also suggest cleaning some of the other connectors to the solenoid, starter, and ground. They all looked pretty corroded to me.

Everyone is so obsessed with starting a barn find. Don’t waste the time, tear it down and overhaul the top end , fuel system, etc and have a running rig from the get go

What state was it purchased in, you should definitely check the torque boxes and floor pans. I had a 71 4v Cleveland years ago.

Did you remove plugs and pour ATF fluid or Marvel Mystery in cylinders? Try that then after it soaks a while turn it over a few times with plugs removed (easier on starter).

I hope before you get this classic Mustang running you check the oil sir , the lifters will not pump up without it , just saying 😉

One thing you probably didnt even consider, is lifter bleed down. when a car sits for an extended period, the lifters can bleed down, so when you try and start it, theres excessive play in the rockers. So when you crank it over as you were doing, you bend pushrods, then it wont start. Looks like you damaged the steering column trying to remove the old key and tumbler. Why did you replace the solenoid? didnt see you test it, just say its bad. I need to start my own u tube channel...

Not sure you can blame the auto parts store here. You should when possible have the old part with you to verify the part matches that you are looking for.

That is a beautiful car if I had it like that take that car straight to extensive Bill Carlton shop I would tell him to work his magic with some nice deep tubs in the back slam down to the ground okay enough fantasizing you have a beautiful car I'm sure that one holds a good value in the ocean best of luck God bless
