I reckon they realised the production capacity required to design and deliver two brand new full armies for an uproven game system was too high risk so they canned them. It's one of the reasons most of the Old World stuff are older sculpts with some remasters and occassional new model. As you say though Deets - if Old World is successful I reckon they'll release them. THey've done the design work no doubt and probably some concept minis.
@Mikester889 ай бұрын
Totally agree, though if there is anything i'm not sure about is grand cathay. That has to be waaaaay down the line, or if they want to pivot to the chinese market a bit harder. At least kislev got a bunch of models already so they'll probably release them for the empire at a later date. Doing a complete new army seems very unlikely at this stage

I think people truly underestimate the divide within GW staffers, the use of AoS to appeal to their ESG Shareholders (BlackRock 2,225,114 shares @ 6.8% and Vanguard Group 1,547,368 shares @ 4.7), and the active suppression of Old World discourse by GW's social media team.
@dakotah76839 ай бұрын
@@CaptainFancyCatWhats the discourse,besides that one idiots ridiculous comp rule, and that one shitty book?
@unrealassasination9 ай бұрын
@@CaptainFancyCat First, how is AoS a vessel to appeal to ESG shareholders? If you're gonna argue the use of female models, then that argument falls apart because TOW has female models as well in units which you can argue are male only aka the new foot knights. Besides, the first TOW novel (Lords of the lance) has 4 pegasus knights which are female and a character which is gay. So no, AoS isn't what you make it out to be when it's company policy to push this kind of narrative. Secondly, you do know that the amount of shares both hold gives them little say in how the company is run? A 6% share, or 10% combined share doesn't make it possible for anyone to press such massive company changing policies through. At most suggest certain things, but in no way shape or form force GW to become more diverse, add more x models, design in x style etc. Thirdly, how is GW suppressing TOW discourse? If you're gonna argue that they delete any negative comment. Then no, that still doesn't count. Because they delete anything negative regardless of topic, be it AoS, 40K, HH or TOW.
@spnked95169 ай бұрын
This is partly my theory on the matter. It looks like TOW began as a much larger project before GW reneged on it's scope and massively downsized the entire project. The two major factors driving this, I feel, was the realities of GWs current manufacturing limitations and a general lack of faith in Fantasy on the part of management due to their prior mishandling of the property. I mean, look at the project on its most base terms. It spent more than 5 years in development. That's a ridiculous amount of time for an already mostly complete product to remain in the works and only produce two factions with a small handful of new models come it's release. Moreover, I don't believe the team tasked with handling the project ever exceeded more than 5 people - not a team large enough to handle the smaller faction list, let alone all the original factions and two (semi) new ones.

I think the key words in that statement were "for the foreseeable future". The most likely scenario (imo) is that they're going to do full releases for the current 9 armies and then look into expanding further. I can see Kislev, Cathay and some of the Legends armies getting some releases in a potential second edition of the game, especially considering how popular the game seems to be in its first few months when looking at the amount of time kits are spending out of stock.

Loving the clickbait masking a good, balanced take in the vid, dude :D Clearly GW, or some group within, got carried away in the pandemic-era boom and their positive comms were a little strong. It was never going to be that way. They need to work out if this is really going to fly, or if the market for the game mostly wants to play with armies we already have. The way forward is clear - if we want this to suceed and to see these armies eventually, we all need to dip into our pockets on this first round of 9 armies and make it a success. There's no use not buying anything over the next 18 months and then complaining if it dwindles away!

The base look is quite obvious: long haired warriors with hair bums and lamellar armor. Chinese fantasy doesn't have any way to deviate from that. The real creative recessions is stuff as the unit compassions the fantastical elements they be either based of sword fantasy or classic mythology and exact period they going to base their stuff off, but I expect a mix and match approach and some Mongolian elements such as light horseman since the name Cathay is more about proto Mongolia than proto China.
@livanbard9 ай бұрын
About Kislev the looks are set on stone too. They are polish hussar mixed with Streltsy and cossacks. The real challenge of this one is how they going to make them a heavy cavalry army without making than just bretonnians 2.0.
@Ultr4l0f9 ай бұрын
@@livanbardHeavy cav? Kislev feels more like Empire minus the black powder imho. Total Warhammer 3 is probably a good guide, as it is GW approved. I only played 1 and 2. But a glance at their roster seems to show 1 regular knight unit and then the bear-riders (so more like demi-gryphs?). But haveing them be separate from the feel of empire can be tricky. Ice magic, magic items and the ice-archers slowing the enemy down could open up some strategic novelty. Add the Move Trough Cover to large parts of the army and you will have something pretty nice. A more mobile, less shooty Empire
@JohnPC009 ай бұрын
Kislev and Cathay aren't cancelled, but they aren't going to show up before the 9 core factions have been released. Hell, I can barely buy any Bretonnians as it is. Kislev at the very least is required as the story trajectory is taking us to Kislev during the Great War Against Chaos. The Imperial civil war is the prelude, Prince Alexis is mentioned (who was the reigning Tzar during the Great War). This also applies to the Legacy armies, as Daemons obviously take part in the war, and Skaven reappear around this time as well. Malekith invades Ulthuan prior to the Great War, which means Dark Elves. So long as GW doesn't fuck everything up by giving a pittance of support when the demand is clearly here. Cathay is a bit harder to pin down, but seeing as how Kislev has a lot more territory at this point, pre war, they might release around the same time given that they trade with each other regularly. They may also get support around the same time with an invasion of the Great Bastion.
@Ultr4l0f9 ай бұрын
I think your speculations are correct. They will slowly build this up. And hopefully we will get a Old World 2.0 with more , or all, armies. Pretty much like how Total War Warhammer did. The game SEEMS like a great succes so far. But damn. GW is realy showing their production limits. What I would realy like is a more open roadmap. They probably have one. So knowing both what will be released, and how they will habdle the rules. By now we realy need a second FAQ. And I would also want to know if they have any plans to "patch" the armies. Like 40K 10th edition has quarterly adjustmenst. I wouldnt mind small tweaks to points atleast.
@ThorekIronbrow9 ай бұрын
I hope launching 2 out of 9 factions didn't affect sales to the point they're reconsidering support. Then again, I'd rather see Chorfs return before bringing it up to 4 human factions. Kickass paintjob, by the way.

Even with only 2/9 factions released, everything is sold out. They literally can't produce enough of ONLY 2 ARMIES. It's definitely very poor planning.

I know that Netflix is run by several executives who each manage their own portfolio and don't care about the others. A rather toxic way to run a company. I sometimes feel GW is run the same way. Different executives running different games, each who are in some faux competition with each other. Old World and AoS are fishing for the same customers. AoS is the dominant game obviously, but if the Old World takes off then it might be a disaster for whoever is running AoS which would create an incentive to sabotage the Old World.

You especially are gonna hate this but the reason old world is going to fail is because they are relying on old models. Most people don’t want to pay for skeleton molds from ‘96. They should rely on new models for the old world with fewer favorite classic minis for made-to-order.
