I remember back in the day cosmetics were unlocked through challenges and achievements that you accomplished to show off your character to other people. Now of days with micro transactions you just buy the cosmetics. These micro transactions make the base game more of a generic experience and strip a little of extra content that could have been in the game and instead sold them to people. In Halo 3 remember finding the skulls and beating the campaign on legendary to get the Katana for your character and everyone in multiplayer and all your friends were like "how did you get that?" & "can you help me get it?" So you helped some of your friends and people get it and had tons of laughs on the way. Well if they had Halo 3 released today a Katana now of days would be probably be in a pack where you have a chance to get it that cost $2.99 and there would be no skulls or side adventure for you to go on for sweet gear.

Bit of a huge post, but I hope you or somebody reads it. A lot of this reminds me of an old metaphor, the boiling frog, especially how you said publishers are taking baby steps so people are getting more 'use' too it slowly. "If you drop a frog in a pot of boiling water, it will of course frantically try to clamber out. But if you place it gently in a pot of tepid water and turn the heat on low, it will float there quite placidly. As the water gradually heats up, the frog will sink into a tranquil stupor, exactly like one of us in a hot bath, and before long, with a smile on its face, it will unresistingly allow itself to be boiled to death." I think we're already close to the point of the 'water boiling' so to speak especially in a world where even *Nintendo* is pushing microtransactions in their games. The usual defense you hear is "They're just cosmetic" or "They don't affect the core gameplay" or "Devs need the money to make post release content!" But I don't buy it. These things affect games in ways people don't appreciate Once upon a time you could earn things like skins through in game achievements, or goals. A perfect example is the gold weapon unlocks in CoD 4. I earned all of those things and it was a point of pride but nowadays you don't see anything like that, all cosmetics are gated behind microtransactions or even worse, gambling crate systems. You don't get anything for playing well anymore, or taking the time to complete challenges or the things you get are so shit compared to things you can simply buy that you wonder what the point of even earning them is. Once upon a time developers would release full fledged *expansions* to their games that gave almost entirely new gameplay experiences. Look at something like Bad Company 2: Vietnam which was a complete overhaul with new weapons, music, maps, gameplay, player models, completely new voice work and a bunch more awesome things. Nowadays you're lucky to get 4 weapons and 4 maps with nothing extra added on. Call of Duty 1 had an expansion, United Offensive which not only added new multiplayer maps and weapons, but an entire new singleplayer campaign. Grand Theft Auto V didn't release promised singleplayer expansions in favor of just churning out microtransactions for GTA: Online. When you consider that the 2 expansions for GTA 4 were fantastic experiences that had entire new vehicles, weapons, multiplayer content, characters and stories and even more it just makes me sad. Because it happens just a little bit more at a time you're completely right, people don't care and fanboys defend their favorite games while refusing to see the negative impact that microtransactions, and DLC has had on the entire industry. The days of games as a complete product are almost gone and we're teetering on the edge of full fledged games as a service now. Give it a few more years and people won't even react negatively to the idea of the xbox locking your games to your console, making it so you can't lend them like they did not long ago. A reaction so strong that Microsoft completely scrapped the idea. One day that will be the norm, one day you will have to drink the 'verification can'. Because we're already so close to boiling over in that pan and nobody even notices. Thanks if you took the time to read this.

In cod 4 remastered, the supply drops generally give you a lot of progress towards earning something. Yes, you can just pay for a gun, but the rate at which you earn a gun is actually solid. I get about 1 per prestige, and you can still get gold through challenges. I feel like it actually adds to the game. If anyone wants to step up and tell me I'm wrong, go ahead. I'm open to change my opinion.
@Spencer-mb6qi7 жыл бұрын
Levi F A perfect explanation for why it feels like games these days produce less and shitty quality content. There will probably be a day where it will all be too much and video games would just restart again like and be like they used to be.
@Jozombies1157 жыл бұрын
I get about one gun each prestige, I think that's pretty fair. You just have to focus on one kind of drop to maximize your duplicates, and makes sure that it's a rare.
@Jozombies1157 жыл бұрын
After the first couple prestiges, you build up a lot of duplicates, at this point I tend to get 150-200 parts on average, and about one in every ten supply drops I get over 800 parts in one drop. If you want any gun in that game, you can obtain it after 2 prestiges of saving for sure.

This is one issue plaguing Halo, the most fun I had in Halo 5 was unlocking the Helioskrill armor. Which to achieve outside of req packs isn't even in Halo 5, I had more fun doing the 4 weekend grind of the MCC campaigns solo legendary to unlock the armor than opening stupid gold req packs. Look at Reach and H3 there was actual progress and achievement to getting armor. For example in Reach when you saw someone with Inclement Weather in the early days you knew how much that person played to get the credits to purchase that. There was no micro transaction shortcut.

CWDTrixie 100%. I have zero problems with microtransactions that actually make sense. tf2 makes absolute sense and you get real content for free. compare to the free "content" You get in say gta5. That's not real content and the micros are idiotically over priced. any time you need to buy game money with real money is always bad. 2k games all do this terrible practice and red dead online will too. Activision prefers the gambling micro method.
@cuddlecakes71537 жыл бұрын

AwesomeGoldenGamers I also love that with the second series of skins and all, they added a way to purchase with the in game currency. So that means you don't even have to pay money for some of it. People complain about free content saying it isn't significant or enough. Uh ok... jeep talking that shit while you buy your shark cards right in front of me. No one will admit that greedy companies are not ruining gaming. Gamers are ruining it. Companies will do whatever makes them money. That's capitalism which isn't evil. It's simple. Pay money for the right shit and don't pay money for cod, battlefield, rockstar and 2k games. Once, ea, and activision realize that their greedy dlc policies aren't lucrative, they'll abandon them. If tf2 continued and did extremely well like a damn near perfectly balanced fps mp shooter should, it would prove that the free content and the fairly priced skins etc works. But no... the idiotic and sheep like gamer community will continue to pre order the shit out if cod, battlefield, and 2k games regardless of how many times they are burned by them. It's why I feel humanity is doomed because most people are legitimately just that stupid.

i agree with you except for when it comes to skins. Microtransactions that have minimal impact on the gameplay (and quite honestly microtransactions in general) are the life blood that allows us to have these living and breathing games that can continually add content. Titanfall 2 is a perfect example. Sure thats one less skin to work for but as a trade off i get new maps, guns, and even entire titans to learn and master. when its all said and done microtransactions are good when they dont heavily effect gameplay and when that money is being cycled back into the game as free content.
@liam_28037 жыл бұрын
however what they should do is make say, prime titans something to work towards so it could be you need 500 kills with ronin plus 100 kills with his core and then 50 assassinations and take down 100 ronins. this would then make the prime ronin a status symbol. people would see a prime ronin and think "wow he's really good with ronin!" rather than he spent 5 dollars on that

I remember the days back during MW2, MW3, Bo1 and 2 when you had to work to get that special weapon and the level up system actually meant something.

This is 100% constructive criticism..... Keep making videos man you're content is such quality.

Micro Transactions were implemented and raked in more profit that expected.... they will stay forever. It will be like custom classes in FPS games. They were implemented as an experiment, and now they have become the standard....

The cost of making games has gone way up, but they still retail at $60. they don't want to raise the retail price because it'll push buyers away (people complain about the $60 price tag). I believe this is why micro transactions are becoming a big issue IMO.
@DanIsJustDan7 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised that people still buy games at $60 a pop. With Amazon Prime or Best Buys Gamers Unlocked, games are only cost $48.

A Duarte805 On Amazon Prime, it's 20% off when you pre-order (which you can usually still do on launch day) games. However, it usually doesn't apply for digital or pc version. With Best Buy Gamers Unlocked, you always get the 20% off all video games.

Then decrease the budget for god sake. Look at Hellblade, one of the most beautiful games ever made, and it's an indie title.

stop hiring celebrity voice actors because i don't give a shit stop focusing on advertising because i don't give a shit and most people don't give a shit dark souls is an 80+ hour rpg which is one of the greatest games of all time that managed to make a profit with only 1 million sales also dark souls has no microtransactions and one $20 DLC that adds hours of content so no, companies don't need microtransactions to make a profit

Good vid!!! I have had a similar experience as you but not at Chucky cheese. Mine was at a place that had a bowling alley, pizza, soda, and an arcade that gave you tickets. The fun part about that though is you couldn't buy the prize with real money.

the mood of this video seems like a mystery-solving TV show. like, unsolved mysteries of the universe, where there isnt an actual resolution at the end of the show, but more questions. but you're talking about chucky cheese lmfao

Thank you so much! I've been getting burned out on BF4 after 1500 hours, and I couldn't figure out why. I was kicking ass and had a high KD with like half of the weapons mastered, but it just wasn't as fun as when I was still working for the level cap. Now, after watching this, I realized that it isn't me or the game that's the issue. It's the fact that I've done everything to do in the game and there isn't anything left to complete.

Awesome vid Batman. I agree with you 100% , you're my favourite game critic and your commentary is flawless. I just watched your Battle Watch video and noticed how much you like competitive games and for this reason, I would really like you to do some vids on Rainbow Six Siege, it's a really competitive skill based game and I think you would like it. I'm addicted to it as I was so disappointed with BF1 I needed a new game to play and Siege is awesome. Really hope you play it if you haven't already and would love a review of it from you mate. Also loved the little speech at the end! Great vid man. Keep it up!

This is the same concept as using modded gear in the Borderlands and Diablo games. Invincibility and the ability to one-shot any enemy is fun for like...20-30 minutes. Fortunately for those games, the fun isn't _permanently_ ruined and returns once you unequip (or sell) that stuff.

Batman your videos are a breath of fresh fucking air. I missed you and your advanced commentary on problems people bitch about, but don't have any real solution. It would be amazing if you had time to do videos on mrw, maybe even after it releases as a standalone. Anyway love your videos and hope you post more often!

I remember me and my friend pocketing thousands of tickets from chucky cheeses on one day. We combined our tokens and played games with bigger rewards, but high risk. Like you said it took a lot of planning and math to figure out how to strike it rich. Pocketing all of those tickets in one day was so fun, I miss Chucky Cheeses. I'll never forget the childhood memories.

Its the frog in boiling water example. Its they slowly change things so that we rarely notice it. Then when we reach the end we say "wow it is so different now than it was in the past, how did we not notice it"?

I played the very first Call of Duty for two years without any microtransactions, without any level progression, and without any additional purchases. My reason to continually play was the friendships I made with the server players that I had come across who lived in the Netherlands (shout out to the XLR servers from Twente University). My best friend to this day is the same man I played with at the very beginning. That is back when the incentive to keep playing was to do good in individual matches, get better over time play with people you like, and other things such as that. Those were the days when the modding community extended the life of the game exponentially because they added new content for the love of the game. That is the one thing that the games today, at least Call of Duty, is missing.

I personally have no issues if the Micro-Transactions in games like ESO, you can get cool pets, and outfits, and little items like good poisons, and or consumables that temporarily increase overall stats, but a majority of items I'd assume 95% do not effect gameplay.

Skipping to the end is like the worst thing ever. To be honest, that happened to me on MW2, i was in a game and i knifed a player and it unlocked EVERYTHING all titles and banners and challenges, my game was ruined my account was ruined. It was all tainted. I have not gone back since.

That Chuck E. Cheese story/analogy was brilliant. You never fail to get your points across in the most eloquent ways Batman. This is the most powerful video about the negative effects of micro transactions I've ever seen. God bless.
