I've got two '08 Sierras. Almost identical. But... One gas, one diesel. Yes, the 6.6 is of course a lot (~1000lbs) heavier. But the power difference is INSANE. You're forced to rev the 5.3, slipping in/out of the converter happy zone. The 6.6, you just pick an RPM (anywhere above idle) and it just stays there. I put a 4K lb trailer behind it, and had to keep checking the rear view to make sure it was still there!
@james107392 күн бұрын
Well if you got a 5.3l gas and a 6.6l diesel they really are not almost the same one is a 1/2 ton and the other is a 3/4 ton or more i guess they probably look similar

Lt! You’ve gotta do a gmt800 off road build! I feel like the Yukon/ Tahoe platform is slept on as a cheap 4wd to get your foot in the door. But with your expertise I bet you could snag a 6.0 2500 (they’ve already got a disc brake 14b) and then just replicate the diesel sport truck build with a frame chop and do a linked Dana 60 up front. The thing would be a monster!

I don't think i have ever witnessed you build a custom, non commercial, rig. All kidding aside, anything you decide on works for me... just can't get enough of your honesty and craftsmanship!

For a souped up Duramax , check out Gale Banks. He builds the motors for the US Army JLTV You cant really compare a 5.3 V8 with a 3 liter EPA compliant 3 liter four banger with half the horsepower. A series turbo setup can give instant throttle response. The 220hp version of 2.4 liter Volvo D5 has a switch valve that switches airflow from the small turbo to the big one when enough flow is generated to drive the big turbo. Response is instant and torque blows you away.

pretty sure I talked about that engine when I visited: OM606 (around 500lbs fully dressed) Mechanical Fuelpump from Diesel Pumps UK and a Supercharger. There's plenty of aftermarket support, talking mounting plates for different transmissions, manifolds etc and with a stock bottom end you could get yourself easily a lightweight 400+HP power plant. Don't know if the inline design makes a huge difference in keeping most of the weight in the center but any way I'm excited to see what you'll come up with! And happy new years from Germany!

I don't agree. A non turbo diesel engine with the throttle on the pump has as much response as a gas engine. It just has no horse power (but torque). I've driven more then a 500k miles in a 1905cc diesel with a whole 72 horses from Citroën. The best and civilized diesel from the 80s and 90s. Performed really well in the slick mud road conditions here. Man, I loved that Citroën BX. Have a lot of fun building one, will be awesome to see!

I was watching a youtube video with people 4wheelin & one guy had a newer wrangler that he put a cummins 4bt in it & that jeep scaled a boulder that was bigger than the jeep! He had suspension with all kinds of flex & he went up & over that huge boulder with no problems! On one of the car shows on tv I saw a guy build a cummins 4bt & it had 430hp & a little over 1,000lb ft of torque, that's a lot of hp from a 4 banger & a huge load of torque & it's lighter weight than one of those really heavy 6 or 8 cylinder diesels but still puts out the same amount of torque. Put a 4l80 behind it & when you need instant response like when you're climbing one of those straight up walls, hold the brake pedal down, give it some gas so that the motor is making some torque, release the brake & let that torquey little engine pull right up the incline! I think you should build an s10 single cab so it has that short wheelbase with a cummins 4bt in it with a suspension that can flex to Canada & back & you will have a ton of fun!! Oh and put some great brakes on it, like 6 to 8 piston calipers & drilled & slotted rotors, you will definitely need great brakes for climbing them steep rock walls.
@MikeLewis-ot6qhКүн бұрын
I believe the delays are caused by the gas pedal being electronic in the computer purposely delaying reaction if the gas pedal was originally a throttle cable that is direct input, and those issues will go away

you need to out wagon Matt... when you build your off roader make it from an epic wagon for a classic look a late 50's for rambler wagon on a custom tube frame. for an 80's nostalgia get and ford LTD wagon on a superduty frame for 90's flare a caprice wagon on a suburban running gear or a 2000's junk and dodge magnum wagon body setting on a ram chassis

I have a diesel gladiator on 37's. The throttle response sucks stock. It needs to be tuned. I've had it off road all over the country. 40k miles now. Hasn't let me down yet and gets 22 mpg. It's a modern diesel though. You can't just abuse it like an old Cummins and expect it to last forever. They need to kept up with on maintenance and can't be short cycled.
@jeffmcdonald101Күн бұрын
I think you'd be crazy to go against the sheer experience and knowledge of Matt and the rest of the serious rock crawling mob and go diesel. Check out mischief maker, trailmater, robby, fab rats etc etc etc. Look at motorsport. From go-carts to motorcycles, to formula cars, to nascar and all the other series. There's a good reason maybe? If you want to overland or tow, go diesel. That's what they are for. If you want responsiveness, it's really a no brainer (though MANY die hards will argue). Cheers, mech eng and life long racer.

It really depends on the diesel. An lb7 has pretty good throtrle response because the static compression ratio is a lot higher than later diesels, small fixed turbo. They are heavier but only a few hundred lbs. Low to midrange power, and something that will stay cool is what you want.
@all.how.actual2 күн бұрын
My ‘17 Silverado was the same as yours on throttle response. I put a Pedal Commander on it and removed the DBW lag
@CrinosAD22 сағат бұрын
I get the throttle response is better in a gas NA engine. I will be slower with a airfeeder in line, but...not as slow as a diesel. but. what all gas engines lack, even with seriously amounts of forced air. Torque. The diesel does not even have to work while hauling, while the gas would run alot harder. Consuming more fuel, and in all cost more to operate. (at least if gas prices are as here in Norway, crazy expensive in relative to diesel). You might say that you need a tad more skill and planning as you mentioned, to run a diesel rig, but. I still believe it's better than gas for towing, in all conditions. And I'm not even a super hard fanboy of diesel... I run EV 98% of the time. (after all, I live in Norway). I do have a '03 2500 RAM with a 5.9 Cummins with a mild tune of aprox 450HP and 800 Lbft of torque, if I mount my compound turbo kit, I get about 800HP and 1200 lbft of torque. (but still slower than a gas engine on throttle response) And I guess that Gail Banks have something to say about proper tuning of a diesel and how to make it outperform many gas equivalents in build cost.

Dull throttle tip-in is my least favorite thing about electronic throttles. On manual cars it's even worse because they are often programmed to ignore blips entirely.
@turnquistpeКүн бұрын
The delay isn't from the fuel type it is from throttle being mechanical linkage on the morvair and drive by wire on the jeep. That being said, a diesel will take longer to move up the rpm range simply because they are built heavier. But unlike in a gasoline engine you do not need the rpm to put down the torque
@TimoastraКүн бұрын
The issue is likely that a disel needs to be turbocharged to have any reasonable power, and the turbo introduces quite a bit of lag. A supercharged diesel should be fine, but since diesels burn with much leaner mixture compared to gasoline, the supercharger would need to be large, expensive and heavy to make torque that can compete with gasoline.

So it seems to me Matt and LT should perhaps build a “responsive” diesel. As I like both! A diesel mated to an auto box keeps throttle and torque up, so would a more flexible programme keep the diesel working, or rip all that stuff off and make an old-fashioned stamp-and-go type? And why not supercharge the race car Corvair

Diesel is awesome, but due to the expense of maintaining the late model diesels and their dumb environmental requirements, gas is cheaper, and the performance gap is narrowing. I don't know if the regulators are trying to wipe out diesel or not, but they are doing a good job of it either way.
