Will Pharrell Last At Louis Vuitton?

In today's video we discuss Pharrell Williams' new louis vuitton collection (Louis Vuitton Fall Winter 2024 Menswear)
The day after Pharrell Williams’s first rodeo for Louis Vuitton-that extravaganza of a show on Pont Neuf last June-the studio he leads began work on this collection. Now that you can begin to join the dots, it appears that he is taking the house (via an ocean crossing) on something of an odyssey. The four LV trunks wheeled down the runway tonight strongly suggest he’s still en route to somewhere, but for fall ’24 his LV caravanserai moved into what is home territory for Williams: the USA and its heritage of Western wear and workwear.
Speaking to the press during a post-show howdy, he said: “When you see cowboys portrayed you see only a few versions. You never really get to see what some of the original cowboys looked like. They looked like us, they looked like me. They looked Black. They looked Native American.”
The native peoples of what became the United States were respected and represented in tonight’s telling via participation and acknowledgement. The house said that artists from the Dakota and Lakota tribes contributed to the accessories; these included hand-paintings and beautiful desert flower embroideries on several versions of the Speedy bag. The opening and closing music was co-composed by Williams and Lakota “Hokie” Clairmont and performed by a group named Native Voices of Resistance, who along with the models and the studio team took a bow with Williams at the end. Amongst the models was Lakota musician Gunner Jules, who carried a painted Keepall above his hand-tooled Goodyear welted cowboy boots, jeans, LV cowboy buckle belt, and patched shearling jacket.
Still, though: American history is so fraught, freighted, and subject to fiery debate in the battleground of contemporary cultural identity. The year Louis Vuitton founded his start-up workshop by the Place Vendome, 1854, was also the year of the Achulet massacre, the First Sioux War, and the capture and re-enslavement of Anthony Burns in Virginia. Williams said: “We’re expressing ourselves from a place of love, no judgment. Just think about telling your story and telling your people’s story as best you can and doing it candidly and with love-that’s the overwhelming feeling.”
The storytelling achieved by the studio and artisan teams of the house though the execution of their craft under Williams’s direction was often outstanding. Lace shirts were embroidered with lasso-throwing cowboys and denim jackets with yellow desert flowers. Chaps in leather or denim-possibly a first for the house-were embroidered in saddlery patterns or fringed and flowered. Suiting-including the collarless Pont Neuf jacket that is becoming a Williams LV emblem-and denim was riveted with turquoise, which was also tooled into belts, collar tips, bolos, jewelry, and bags.
The first rodeo’s “Damoflage” was reinterpreted into a pixelated “Cowmooflage” on printed calfskin trucker jackets and trunks. There was an amazing black bomber in silk satin that had been in parts stripped away then over-embroidered with more Western florals. This was accessorized with a black Speedy 40 set with studs and fringing. Another bag, a compact doctor’s satchel in a dusty-effect monogram, was framed with horseshoes at each side panel while a Speedy in the same suite came with a key upon which was etched “Louis Vuitton’s Motor Trunks.”
This pointed to the timespan covered by this collection: In terms of Western dress it included items that were more akin to cinematic or performance cowboy costume, including a flame red rancher suit in leather, complete with lasso, and a black leather blouson decorated with ersatz Las Vegas style Western signage. The generous selection of workwear included double-fronted work pants riveted with turquoise in croc print nubuck and a cotton duck chore jacket printed with cowboys. Two models in matching monogrammed tracksuits pulled us forward even further towards contemporary streetwear, which is effectively what Western wear was before the streets were laid. - VIA VOGUE RUNWAY, WRITTEN BY LUKE LEITCH

Im so happy he reduced the use of monograms in the ready to wear. I understand the bags need to sell, and I hope he and his team really push the monogram innovation more, seasonally. But the clothes are actual clothes and not giant brand-billboards. Those suede jackets? AMAZING. you have to be able to enter the store and be able to get " a really nice jacket" that helps bolster the brand value.

i just realized why lvmh put non-designers in the drivers seat. It's the marvel studios method of control. if you are unfamiliar with the concept, there is a theory going around that many of the MCU movie directors were picked not because their films and artistic voice lined up with what the producers wanted, but that due to their relative inexperience (most of the directors previous work were small indie movies) the marvel producers could overwhelm them with the resources of titanic scale plus enormous post production VFX work they would have zero experience with. You take a director used to maybe $1mil to $5 mil budgets and you put them in the drivers seat of a $100mil behemoth. They tried early on to get established directors that would have made sense for each movie but what would happen is that they would be let go due to "creative differences" (ie not doing exactly what marvel wanted). The objective by doing this is to get a certain level of guaranteed consistency in product while having some degree of hollywood cred with talent. this worked for like a decade, so, credit where its due i guess. we're moving on from them now but the damage done to the movie business (studios yolo-ing billion dollar bets on tentpoles instead of across many smaller productions) may be irreversible.

I can't speak for other LVMH brands but they haven't put a "marvel director" in the driver's seat for LV for a long time and certainly haven't now. In fact, this partnership/directorship goes as far back as 2005 with his sunglasses collab so the seed of the idea has existed for at least a 15 years, if not longer. Pharell has headed multiple brands from Human Made/Race, Billionaire Boys Club, Bape(unofficial but Nigo cites his influence), and notably Adidas for footwear. He isn't a non-designer nor is he inexperienced within fashion. He has been quite the opposite, professionally, especially within the last decade alone. I urge anyone who doesn't know their history to check Pharell's pedigree pre 2000s. It runs deeper than most would have you believe.

I do think the collection could have had a better aesthetic than just an overall look. The bags are amazing but the clothes just lack a bit if not a lot.

Pharell AMERICANIZED the Brand. That's all. He brought the LVMH to the heart of American culture. Ode to the history and passages of time that Western wear has has on the culture. Using accuracy in this collection took courage and I'm glad he took the risk. All in all, I think the idea was to solidify and even reintroduce the LV brand as an American brand. Pharrell taking the hit after hit for a theme/trend collection, Is BONKERS. taking away the social history aspects of cowboys, and black and native Americans, he’s being vilified for being literal when NO ONE else is. If you look at the pieces individually they give that workwear, capsule collection (kinda also quieter luxury without everything being monogrammed to hell and back) where pieces could be mixed and matched. Also in the social ether Yellowstone the tv show blew the hell up, so taking a western aesthetic and running with it as a trend, was inspired. Game of thrones influenced the runways when it was at its peak. Cultural shifts are now more prevalent in the social ether due to social media. Pharrell also plays to his own people, music industry, celebrity, sports multi millionaires, that want luxury, that can afford luxury, that trust him as a person and he wants be successful in what ever he does, so obviously he’s gona pull a fashionable trend onto the runway. It doesn’t need to be so existential in the history of the American cowboy, the cultural heritage of native Americans, it doesn’t need to be THAT deep.

A native perspective? Louis Vuitton is a French fashion house exploiting native culture by marketing these south western native inspired products to the wealthy which typically isn't indigenous people. More so over, despite using some native models and co-collaborators, having these south western native inspired pieces be manufactured by those who aren't indigenous essentially takes away jobs from indigenous people. Not to mention the now increase in price of these materials that indigenous people have been using for generations. While Pharrell's attempt to offer indigenous peoples a platform to use as a foundation to build upon, he is also contributing to the struggle of indigenous creators who have been designing pieces like these all by themselves for generations. So although I and many other of my indigenous kins and companions are appreciative of the inclusion and recognition, we are also resentful of the system that has forced us to rely on other voices to advocate our stories. Kinda similar in concept to "Bamboozled" a movie Spike Lee made in reflection of his own experience becoming a black film maker in a white dominated industry, having to play along with the system in order to advance; but "at what cost?" 27:00; YES. I work for Louis Vuitton and said the same thing. I’m a 5’11”, size 30 178 pound man. I can wear these designs. I’ll do the skater jeans, and the bell bottoms and pearls. However it’s not selling super fast (in Chicago) because his taste isn’t unilateral. It ties into that idea of him being a bit of a voyeur in black culture, in that what Virgil sold to drug dealers and scammers and the rappers he can’t wear. They’re absolutely selling Pharrell to people from other cultures (particularly Asian!) that is more palatable. They’re selling Pharrell and I also love the commentary on saying, “Virgil is discussing these important ideals of blackness, where as Pharrell is trying to sell cool.”

I totally relate to what Caleb is saying! Womenswear sits. I heard that womenswear is about 3% of our sales for the US. Women would much rather do Dior or Chanel RTW. The signatures in women’s RTW isn’t amazing enough and it’s a category we push aggressively but people don’t want it. Again, agree with Roadman, as a fashion person we’re aware of Pharrell but the layman adores him and will try things he’s done that seem tame to us. Further agree shareholders are ruining everything. I see so many other brands and their staple products in this single LV show. Like they copied and just slapped their LV logo over it. They cast their net wide with topics to cover and should have narrowed in on just a couple and edit down the collection. I don’t look to LV for clothing. They are a brand who made luggage and travel related products and were one of the experts in that arena. But it seems that’s not who they want to be anymore and it’s not the customers they want anymore. The Native American thing I guess is a good nod but what happens after this collection ends? Are they going to keep using those Native American models? Are they going to keep collabing with NA? I mean if they kept a permanent collection that is NA and profits are donated to help that community then that would be a good thing.

Comments were made about Black Americans believing they have a right to Native American culture. If you research US History, you will realize it becomes extremely complicated. Many Black Americans are of Native American ancestry. Members of the FIVE TRIBES ( Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole) owned slaves. Also, when African slaves ran away, many lived amongst the Natives because they had similar beliefs and lifestyles before their enslavement. After Emancipation in 1865 many slaves decided to live among the Natives. Yes, we do have a right to express that side of our culture as well. Perfect example of this is the actor Don Cheadle.

I think it is considerate of the fact that Louis Vuitton is a French brand with a man designing for the line who excuses himself by saying I’m not a clothing designer in the first place. The only way Pharrell could have used indigenous designs correctly is by partnering with tribes directly to license their art so they can also profit. I live in phoenix and have native friends, they hate seeing brands rip off their culture; it's never done well nor with respect. Without a financial partnership, the collection just comes off as another western brand appropriating culture. Most of the clothing is gauche, there's a few bags and shoes which stand out but most of the collection feels too gimmicky. Also, in case your curioius: The real cowboys actually originated in Mexico , they go by Vaqueros. It would have been more authentic had also referenced this early chunk of cowboy history. Black cowboys didn't arrive till much later after the slave trade; it was one of the few decent jobs available at the time for black men who escaped west from southern slave states.
