Will polishing your air rifle barrel increase velocity? Before and after test on Benjamin Trail NP2

Doing some testing on my Benjamin Trail NP2, we know bore cleaning and polishing can have a positive effect on air rifle accuracy, let's do some testing to see if there's any significant effect on velocity!

Same. Perhaps the result would be more dramatic in a barrel that was way more crusty. May do a similar test with my beater Gamo, it's in real bad shape haha

Why are these copper coated pellets for PCP rifles only? Is that just a manufacturers recommendation because of their heavier weight? Or perhaps their harder surface or factory lube makes them less suitable for springers? There didn't appear to be a problem.

Did you clean the barrel between batches of pellets ? If not, this won't give a true reading due to the fouling from the first batch 😊

That's one of the reasons I cleaned and polished. Even after a few hundred shots break in it was frustrating. It did indeed tighten my groups up nicely, and I found mine likes a tight hold rather than the artillery hold

I would not use a bronze brush through the barrel . it's not advisable can damage the bore Pull throught from the breech to the muzzle, nice video Cheers

'Most' air rifles have a 'choked' muzzle end for shooting pellets as that's what gives traditional pellets best results. Slugs don't do well from a choked barrel and prefer a none choked barrel. A bronze brush is quite harsh for a air rifle barrel so just using a pull through cord with a small patch cloth is best. Obviously a bronze brush is best for removing carbon (which you don't have from just shooting lead pellets being pushed out by air. You need to be careful to not damage your choked barrel end. Always pull through from the breach end so as not to damage the barrel end crown as this can be critical on a pellet gun for accuracy.

@@brynybach7741that's a great explanation, but the math isn't mathing. A few passes with something way softer than steel isn't going to damage. I guess I just don't subscribe to the "air rifle barrels are special" mentality. I've not seen any real evidence to support it. Feel free to judge me

When i polish the bores of my muzzle-loading rifles I use patches cut out of red 3m metal polishing pads. I run 4 pads in and out 50 times each for about 200 passes. The patches are quite thick. I use the slotted patch holder from a shotgun cleaning kit to hold those thick patches. I haven't tried to use them on anything smaller than 45 caliber. My point is that even with something that aggressive it takes a lot of passes through the bore to get the micro-burrs polished away. If I was going to use the Red 3m pad on a 22, I would probably cut it into strips and pull it through with fishing line. That was an interesting video. Thanks for doing it.
