Will the AFRICAN PRIDE PRE-POO detangle MY DENSE WAISTLENGTH 4C hair?

Two months ago, I experimented with Nappyheadedjojoba's detangling concoction. Things didn't work out, partly because of my poor planning and likely also because the mixture wasn't suited to my hair.
Under that video you all left tonnes of comments offering your advice and support. It was all thoroughly appreciated. What many of you don't know is that I already have a solid routine for detangling my hair. It actually works really well. I only wanted to use Nappyheadedjojba's mixture because it had the promise of being even faster. In today's video, I wanted to show you my OWN detangling routine on one side of my head, and the African Pride Moisture Miracle Pre poo, a widely recommended alternative, on the other.

I don't think this was a fair review. The instructions say to leave it on for 20mins max and she left it for way more than that. Also, she caked coconut oil in her hair the night before which may have affected the product. I'm not saying that the product may not agree with her hair but it needs a retry.

Sharon Burton Sharon Burton thanks for your comment. It wasn’t an objective review. It allowed me to see that this product is not suitable for my routine. I use coconut oil as a pre-poo due to its small and polar structure which allows it to penetrate the cuticle and sit in the cortex. This ability reduces the amount of water that enters the cortex during washing, thereby mitigating hygral fatigue. I ascribe a major portion of my hair’s success to this practice and would be very reluctant to cease this practice. In addition, I’ve seen another KZbinr apply the product directly over coconut oil and get fantastic results. As to your point about time, I’d be wary about any product which could turn destructive/counterproductive after sitting for a while. To date, I have never favoured such a product. Have you? Moreover, I imagine that this is not typically the case for those who actually like the product. A fair number of commenters have said that they let it sit for a while, apply it to damp hair or otherwise disregard the instructions. I may try again but not anytime soon, especially since I’m satisfied with my routine.

I definitely disagree this is about her hair in particular in her routine and even if she did it correctly I still don’t think it would’ve worked it’s a little bit of coconut oil and putting it in for too long makes it not work. Kind of Pre-shampoo treatment has a maximum time limit that’s a little ridiculous it just seems like something that would not work into most peoples routines

That pre-poo detangler is AMAZING!!! I had to skip a wash-day and was dreading dealing with my hair as I knew that just makes it even harder to deal with due to all the shed hairs stuck in it which is the biggest cause of tangles. When I applied this product to my very dry tangled hair I was struck by how much moisture and slip it had... I was also amazed as the shed hairs started coming out as I smoothed it into my hair. I just wish the styling product had that much moisture and slip.

What I noticed with this detangler is that you have to detangle right away with it, not let it sit because it starts drying and getting sticky and not as slippery. I detangle as soon as I put it on and it has super slip which amazes me but I noticed I have to work kinda fast with it. This may not work for your detangle regimen but yea you have to start detangling as soon as you put it on, it starts to dry quickly.

That’s because there is more to hair than just curl type? Like y’all still don’t get it. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Is your hair just as dense as hers? Do you have same texture (strand size)? Do you have the same porosity? Do you have the same length? If you answered no to any of these questions then you two do NOT have the same hair type. This is why so many people just can’t find what works for them because they stay focused on a chart that does not work on its own.

That reverse-comb-detangling makes a lot of sense! I think it works for you bc you keep your hair sectioned and detangled at the roots by clumping. Since watching your vids, I’ve done clumping and have found that it is the best way to avoid tangle hair. My mom who is a stylist uses the “picking” method you used while combing but she start at the ends like most. I’ve found that adopted that has made detangling much easier. I’m going to try your reverse method. Thank you for your enlightenment.

My hair is nowhere near as long but I know it can look similar to yours when I stretch my twists at night and loose the next day. You're very brave trying other concoctions on your hair. I don't think it's something I'd do... Or I might try it on a small section to test it out first... You're good. I already follow you on Instagram so I'll check out your giveaway. Really???? That's cool to know. It's actually originally from Natural85's 25-minute detangling technique adapted for 4C hair. Before I tried her method, I used to use oil and water alone. Naturally High I first divide my hair in four sections. I use my oil mix or sometimes it’s just sweet almond, and apply a generous amount on each section. Then I apply my cheap conditioner (my conditioner is a good mixture of being runny enough) to each section. Keeping the sections divided place my shower caps on and let sit for at least an hour. Then I can go section by section gently pulling it apart to release shed hairs. Then proceed to washing then deep conditioning. I do want to say in the comments some people say just rinse it out don’t get frustrated. I would have said the same thing years ago when my hair was much shorter. From my experience detangling very long type 4 hair is just much more difficult than my shorter hair.

I hope this helps: I tried this product. I realize that it works extremely well if I start detangling with it the INSTANT it hits my strands. But if I wait any length of time (like 20 seconds even), and the product starts to dry even a little bit, then it has the OPPOSITE DESIRED EFFECT on my hair -- it makes my hair strands cling to one another. Hair details: I have fine, natural, 4b hair (and maybe some 4a sections), and at the time I tried the product my hair was bra strep length.
@NaturallyHigh
@NaturallyHigh 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. That's a little unexpected since the instructions tell you to leave it in for 20 minutes. I also find it a bit worrying that leaving it in for some time could make it prove counterproductive. What if you're applying it and get interrupted? It's useful to hear advice to use it instantly, though. Strangely enough, some people have come on and said it works better with oil, or when left to sit for a while. It seems unpredictable :/

@@NaturallyHigh, wow. That's so interesting that some people have gotten great results with it by leaving it in for 20 minutes. Eek! Maybe it is just my hair to which my tip applies -- I don't know. I have had the best results detangling with water plus one of the following products: (1) Shea Moisture's High Porosity masque, (2) Uncle Funky's Daughter's Heal and Renew deep conditioner, and (3) Soultanicals Knot Glide. It could be that the coconut oil is breaking down the pre shampoo product. Sometimes it's good to use products in isolation so you can judge them in their own rite and then combine things in different combinations adding only one new ingredient at a time. These things are still chemicals (even natural things have chemicals) and different chemicals react differently with one another.
@NaturallyHigh
@NaturallyHigh 4 жыл бұрын
Hey! You're entirely right, that certainly could have been a factor. That said, I've seen another KZbinr work with it successfully on top of coconut-oil coated strands. She also pre-poos with coconut oil to mitigate hygral fatigue. In addition, other commenters (under my last video) have admitted to using the product in combination with oil. While it's possible the coconut oil could've hampered the detangling potency of the product, it is difficult to blame it solely without disregarding the success other naturals have had with the combination. In addition, I'm reluctant to skip my pre-pooing step since I believe it's been instrumental in reducing the amount of damage I sustain when washing. However, you're right. It wasn't the fairest of tests.

A million times over people have promised me that if I only used X product, it would change the game for me for detangling, which takes me too long (3 hours at a time, even if it is once a month, is too much time for me). What I've learned is, no matter how earnestly people insist that X product, or even X method, is going to change the fundamental nature, they are incorrect. No, it's not. After many years' experience and experimentation, we know what our hair is, and a product is not going to change its fundamental nature.

I agree with this. Like it doesn't seem like she honestly gave this product a fair shot. She seems like a stubborn person (this comes from a stubborn person, so this is said with kindness) who just likes to stick to her routines. Seems a bit over-dramatic in personality to me. Not trying to rag on her though. I've watched two of her videos and got the same vibe. Sometimes it's best to try new things because you may find something that works better for your hair than usually. However, in the end, if her hair is growing then she's good.

Tshepiso Bogatsu hey Love! Glad to hear you like it so much. I hear you. You think it would’ve been fairer of me to apply the product on dry hair and leave it on for 20 minutes before styling. I get that. My thing is that I always pre-poo with coconut oil to mitigate hygral fatigue. I’ve seen another KZbinr do this, follow up with the African Pride Pre-poo and get fantastic results. This leads me to think that the coconut oil was not the problem.

I reinforce detangling by adding product and acv/water directly on the tangled parts and on my fingertips and slide my fingers downwards rapidly over that tangled area all the way down to the ends then comb. On small sections I may do that then use a small tooth comb to get rid of the knots, which usually shrink into tiny little, annoying fairy knots that cause such problems. I then cut those suckers off. You should keep adding water/acv for slip.

I love this product i had my hair in micro braids for 4 months and I tried this for the 1st time 4 days ago on my take down I took my sweet time and slowly take down over 3 days this product made the process easier than ever but I put it on the dry braid am working on and unravel it right away once it starts to dry it does get kind of tacky and I have to add a little water to get it slippery again I also added olive oil only at the root where the build up is....... you cant let the product just sit you should take down once you put in your hair and in smaller section so that it does not beginning to dry out while you are working on another part of that section.

Hi there. I have hair similar to yours . Try castor oil and a regular conditioner. I used the giovanni 2chic ultra luxurious conditioner. I sladdered it all over and wow. Tangles slid out. I also used a paddle brush from revlon to detangle using the brush vertically. Best thing to cut down on time.

You really have a particular hair .I always enjoy watching your videos .Seeing the knots and your pain( because I got similar knots) give me strength to continue do my hair even it takes quite a lot of time.I'm so afraid of combs that I exclusively finger detangling .I'm actually trying to incorporate the comb. While you were detangling with the african Pride you said that your hair was wet and the big knot when you try to pull hair out of it you felt that you were actually breaking your hair and that your hair was shrinking that's how I feel with my hair when I try to detangle it wet even with the product has slip in it ( I can't understand how youtubers manage to detangle their hair with conditioner AFTER shampoing ..too much water and my hair just shrunk at this time even with a slippery conditioner in).I really want to know what is particular with your detangling routine using the tresemmé and that allow you to use a comb whithout all the issue that I stated below. Please your detailed detangling technique tips and routine will be really helpful .Thanks for your videos!

Hi Love, I second Katmahasti's comment. Check out my detangling videos. The method I showed in this video first (applying coconut oil and water the night before) is the most effective for me. Your hair sounds very similar to mine so try this. If this video has taught me anything, it's to do patch tests before really committing to a product/method. For this reason, I'd advise you to try out this technique on a small portion of your hair and see how it fares. Best of luck!

Its possible that the coconut oil which retains protein is combining with the protein in the aloe prepoo and holding it to the hair making this like a protein treatment..hence tge difficulty separating the hair strands....i dont deviate from my regime...i mix olive oil and conditioner and that gives me perfect slip each time so i need not have to leave it in for hours i can use that simple mixture right away...even suave and olive oil mixed together works just as well...i run from anything with protein and aloe has protein

I'll add that alot of people are using this as a treatment but its not really great at that. First and foremost, it's a detangler. When I use it immediately on my hair, wet or dry for detangling, it has so much slip and my fingers just glide. If I let it sit for too long, mainly when I put it on dry, my hair dries up and may even starts to tangle a bit if not in twists. This doesn't happen much on wet hair, but again, the slip is best when I detangling with it immediately. It works for me because outside of hot oil treatments specifically, pre pooing is all about detangling for me.

Your observations are always spot on. The formula is too wet, too sticky and not as lubricant as the slimey appearance makes it seem. I used to mix this and the Tresseme Moisture Rich conditioner to try and make it work too - the latter worked better exclusively always. There is definitely a benefit to limiting the water your hair absorbs during detangling. Those knots especially looked like shrunk up shed hair. I think if you ever decided to experiment again (though please give yourself a break - we see the effort you've put in these last couple of videos!), perhaps a much smaller trial section would be better. That way you can protect your hair and still try new things, almost like a skin patch test??? Thanks for sharing, love your vids and routine x

@@NaturallyHigh It is completely deserved, honestly. And I'm so glad to hear that, if just for your well-being, wash-day shouldn't be any more stressful than it needs to be. And it was exactly the same for me. Clumpage but no adequate separation, the water content then started to make my hair shrink and snap. The part you were saying about it being 'squeaky clean' was also the same, it felt like a surfactant on my hair. All in all, if it works for others great but conditioner can do the job and for much cheaper.

Thanks for saving me some coin. I'll stick with Aunt Jackie's Knot on my Watch. It's a perfect detangler. I wonder if it was the combo of the coconut oil before the product that caused the tangling you got? It may be that you need something with more water as your next step after the oil, which is why using the conditioner worked better than the gel form of the African Pride one. Knot on my Watch is very easy to spread and melts knots, though not as much slip as just 'knot gone.'

I have the African Pride Moisture Miracle Leave-In Cream with Coconut and Baobab Oil. It smells nice, but makes my scalp EXTREMELY itchy and somewhat stings. 😱 It also seems to have a drying effect on my hair. I was super impressed with the African Pride pre-poo. I wonder if you're having weird results because it's going on top of the coconut oil. I also use it with coconut oil, but I put the coconut oil on after the pre-poo. It is true that it's probably causing some shrinkage, but the Treseme has water in it too. I wonder if you would have better results by just putting the pre-poo on before the coconut oil the night before, then detangle the next day.
