A piece of advice - whether you are interested or not, no idea - but as a former bartender in a different life, cocktails are made with the ingredients mixed in order from cheapest to most expensive. The reason being that if you screw up, you can minimize the cost. Not that it matters for these kinds of contexts, but anyway, there you go.

The name of that Québécois gin you mentioned (its full name is "48 Chemin Price", or 48 Price Road) refers to the address of the distillery that makes it, in Saint-David-de-Falardeau, a few miles north of the city of Saguenay, in the Monts-Valin area, which is ski country for Saguenay folks. The Saguenay region is renowned for its blueberries - there's a saying in Québec that the blueberries are so big in Saguenay that you only need one to make a pie! -, so it's not surprising they would flavour their gin with blueberries. The name of the gin also refers to the number of herbs and flowers from the boreal forest that are used to flavour this particular spirit.

I have always been a potato vodka person...my mom loved a gin n tonic for very hot days and I did not like the taste..as I mixed it for her🤣. When I was younger I hated gin...Now that I am older my taste have changed a lot. I had someone who loved gin n tonics get one at a very high end restaurant(pre-pandemic), and they commented it was the best one they had tasted and let me taste it. It was so good I ordered one. I have learned that a very good dry gin tastes can be very refreshing. I have also learned to retry drinks and food of things I hated when I was younger. I now eat several things I went many years were I would not eat at all. Don't close your mine to retrying stuff.

Another great video. Regarding the comments made near the end of the video. As tried and trusted most established brands are, here in coastal Victoria we have access to products from some of the best independent breweries, winemakers, and distilleries in Australia. Sometimes you’ll find a something that doesn’t suit your tastes but it still feels good to support a local business and to try something new. I know I’d much rather throw my support behind a bloke and his family that I occasionally see around than a massive corporate entity without a face. Cheers!

I do like Gin, but have learned some things about it I didn't know. I thought gin was just gin. I knew I liked Tanqueray best (on the rocks, 2or 3 green olives), but just thought it was a better distillation process. Hadn't realized there were so many possible differences, based on intended character or style. I shall look at different gins now to broaden my scope. Thanks for this enlightenment. I hope you saw your dentist about your TMJ issue.

I love how you encourage people to step away from the big brands and search for local brews I don't know if I like gin... Never drink it. I think one of the cocktails I used to drink had gin in it. At my favorite pub 30 years ago. They called it 'hot lips' and it was brought over from a holiday destination. I don't remember exactly but ai think it was, gin, crème the cassis and southern comfort, filled up with 7up ( lemony sodadrink) I'm more of a wodkaperson now. So, more wodkaacocktails please haha.

The beauty of craft liquors is that the smaller distilleries offer samples or tastings, reasonably priced, so you can try before you buy. Alas, most of our locals make vodka, limoncello and moonshine only. I’d love to try an artisanal gin. I do have some Amaretto made in New Hampshire though!

Sounds like you need to do a drink matrix like on how to drink. It would be interesting to see recipe matrices from time to time, especially when your eyes light up during a taste test. In my limited experience, most folks who don't like an alcohol type were given something that the other person didn't care if they liked. I have seen a whiskey snob pressure a friend of ours into trying Laphroaig as his first scotch. He was later flabbergasted to learn that not all scotch tasted like seaweed smoked over tar. (His words.)

Gin is something I have to be in the right mood to drink. If I'm in the right mood, and if it's part of a cocktail like this one, I'm totally there! I also agree with supporting artisinal brands. There's a distillery around an hour from where I live that makes absinthe. I haven't had an excuse to go up there (I don't drink a lot of alcohol because I'm small, trying to lose weight, and have to watch my blood sugar), but if I get the chance, I DEFINITELY want to buy some of their stuff!

My favorite summer cocktail is an original 1919 White Lady which was created in 1919 by Harry MacElhone, at Ciro’s Club in London. In 1929 he created the other recipe at his own Harry’s New York bar in Paris replacing Triple Sec by Cointreau and Crème de Menthe by Gin. I ptrefer the lighter, lower alcohol 1919 White Lady as it reminds me of an adult mint lemonade.
@GlenAndFriendsCooking
@GlenAndFriendsCooking 2 жыл бұрын
That story about Harry inventing this drink is cut and pasted across multiple websites - I tend to believe that Harry didn't invent the cocktail that I made here - Even if he did invent a White Lady cocktail, he stuck to his guns with the Crème de Menthe and Brandy recipe to the bitter end. I have several printings of Harry's cocktail books from his earliest to the last ones printed in the 1950s and they all have the exact same White Lady Cocktail: 1/6 Brandy 1/6 Crème de Menthe ⅔ Cointreau As you can see Harry's cocktail is a completely different cocktail, and if he ever came around to Gin, Cointreau, and lemon juice it wasn't reflected in any of his cocktail books (that I own or can find in libraries or collections). Even other bartenders who worked with Harry at Ciro's in London (Jimmy for example) give a version of the White Lady with 'Harry's ingredients" but different proportions: 1 part Crème de Menthe 4 parts Cointreau 1 part Brandy They write about the two cocktails being two completely different drinks, that were unfortunately named the same thing. In the end Cointreau wasn't subbed in for Triple Sec - Cointreau IS a triple sec liqueur and for years it was printed on their label, until the makers wanted to elevate their brand and through marketing took the same liqueur they always made and tried to take it 'upscale' by dropping the triple sec moniker and confusing the marketplace.

Love love love gin! But not in a I'm a total lush way. So many variations to try. It really loves to be mixed up into a cocktail, and I've converted more than one person with something like a Jasmine, or a Last Word. Haters - give it a try in a citrusy cocktail - like the White Lady. I think a lot of folks have only had mediocre London Dry style in something like a Martini or G&T, and that's why they don't care for it. And, as full disclosure - I'm not a fan of the cucumber, rose, lavender & etc. gins. But, that is the beauty of it, so many types for so many tastes.

When it comes to gin, I have tried most of the usual suspects. I have tried one or two of the newer offerings. What works for me in a gin and tonic doesn't please as well in a martini. I wouldn't want too many botanicals in the gin for this White Lady due to the Cointreau and lime juice.
