You are absolutely right in this and I have been thinking that LKY's real difference from other leaders then and now was being able to put aside baggage about our colonial past and have an unemotional assessment of what we could stand to benefit from the West - namely a rules-based world order - while also keeping out negative things like unfettered freedom of press and freedom of speech. He also was able to engage the West on these disagreements rather than take offence and shut them out entirely - see his interviews with Western journalists.

@@SUNIT052 exactly... A lot of third world countries still blame their misery on western colonial powers... Without realizing they are already independent for as much as 50 to 80yrs depending on which country we are referring to. Lets be true to ourselves... Singapore is in a unique position to look at the world and make sense of it given that our strategy will determine our livelihood very strongly. Lee is a master at this, and can also look at the issue without any partisan bias or voter alignment in the US, nor be saddled with Chinese ideology to tow the governing party's line. As a Singaporean in the US, I am not sure how Lee managed to have such amazing insights on both US and China in that period, and they have been largely accurate till today. I think if Lee were still here, he would be a bridge for China and the US, together with other powers to get together to solve the world's problems instead of deciding who wants to be at the top of the world. With the melting ice caps in Antarctica and global warming and increased abnormal weather, or with the problems in the Gaza Strip and Ukraine, countries seem more keen to use these as chips in a political game rather than focus on cooperation. What will being at the top of the world do for a country when the entire human kind may be wiped out in another hundred years with environmental threats or contagious diseases?

Such great insight by LKY. What he didn't say though is "the more the US isolates China, the more it will hurt itself and elevate China". So the best strategy was for US to accept and get along with China. But instead, US chose to block China and experts predict China will soon surpass US much earlier than before. One example. If China had remained in NASA's space program, they would have made the greatest contribution, whilst US got most of the credit. With their confucian nature, they wouldn't complain when given a bad deal and happily take a smaller share. When they do ask for a bigger share, just give it to them, since US is still getting something for nothing. But when US kicked them out, NASA is basically stalled, whilst China's space program is being marvelled at. Mankind set to go to the moon in 2 years.

Singapore as a small country, its survival strategy is nothing new to Chinese people. Li as a Chinese descent, adopted Chinese ancient Wisdom from spring and autumn period and warring states period( 770bc-210bc) which were the small and vulnerable states in order to maintain independence, they have to be allies with neighboring powerful states and dancing between them. But true to be told, all those smaller states ended up disappearing. It just a matter of time. Li had seen the vital signs of weakness of United States from declining of British empire. Instead of pointing out, he praised and glorified American stupidity and ignorance. That is the Asian wisdom as well. Because, Singapore needs American military presence in the region for the time being. Keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer. Hats off to Mr Li. RIP.

Lol, those are just stories. Pretty sure Lee Kuan Yew didn’t even care about 3 kingdoms. Its Pragmatism, how to make a small island survive and do well, no lessons from China history can help him in that. Why do you think even deng xiaoping went to him? Don’t be too arrogant in putting your enemy down, when China haven’t even reached number 1 yet. Always respect your rival, don’t be blinded by your own arrogance. America still is the meta system which all countries still abide and use the technology stacks and infrastructure is based on their system and build over centuries on the backs of immigrant geniuses in US. China cannot beat it only with its own native scientists. Today USA is still the magnet for global talent. Don’t be arrogant, just learn to deal with having another super power who don’t like your country

(for now) mean until de-dollarization kicks in, which is more like 5-10 years than 50-100 years. America is at a point where it can no longer pay off it's debt unless the value of the dollar goes to zero
@trevor30133 ай бұрын
Lmao there is no de-dollarization. That was BRICS propaganda. Not only is the USD the most traded currency in the world, any replacement global currency would still have to pass the Euro, the Pound, and the Yen first, and even if they do, the USD accounts for over 60 percent of global trade. This isn't even taking into account the 50 trillion in US stocks that the world depends on. It's just not realistic or even necessary. Backed by gold? There isn't even enough gold in the world. US gold reserves are the most in the world and that doesn't even cover a trillion dollars.

Lee was a great man and world leader. In this video, Lee had forgotten that the American was bullying Japan into signing The Plaza Accord in 1985 thus causing Japan into deep recession when Japan at that time was seen to be catching up with the U.S. economy. The U.S. has not been just relying on innovation etc to stay at the top, it is also relying on its mafia tactics to rule the world. The Plaza Accord was to manipulate exchange rates by depreciating the U.S. dollar relative to the Japanese yen and the German Deutschmark. Accordingly, it triggered an exceptionally large appreciation of the yen, amounting to 46 percent against the dollar and 30 percent in real effective terms by the end of 1986. (The deutsche mark appreciated similarly.) As a result, Japan’s export and GDP growth essentially halted in the first half of 1986. Hence the American remains at the top.

Definitely not, he envisioned and saw with his own eyes the transformation China has created. Are you telling me he didn't know? Yet was ethnically Chinese, who often visited China yearly, learnt mandarin all his life and even said in his own election rallies; about how the Chinese will learn and then overtake the westerners. US will continue to be the premier super power, simply because they are far ahead, sure China will catch up, but geographically, the Chinese have an inferior position.

The country is very modern, organized and efficient now. I was only there for a very short time, but everyone I talked to seemed unhappy. I didn't get a chance to find out why. But I enjoyed my stay there and it was one of the best places I visited in Asia.
