China's political ambitions might soon begin to expand their territories externally, perhaps not through warfare, but by gradually asserting control over lands of other nations, as seen with initiatives like the "Belt and Road." However, do you think the United States would allow China to become 10 times stronger than itself? Well, I'm not sure about the future, but presently it seems that the U.S. has become aware of China's ambitions. And also China's economy is showing signs of decline, and Xi Jinping based on what he did these 10 years, it might find it difficult to adopt appropriate measures, and many experts are also pessimistic about this aspect. Therefore, with these dual pressures, it might take a while before China could become the world's leader@@Rob-iz6nm
@Kennyk522 Жыл бұрын
@@Rob-iz6nm Also, from a historical perspective, the concept of "used to belong" doesn't hold much ground. Territories have been continuously changing for hundreds, even thousands of years. Present-day China is just a country of around 70 years, 70 years ago, that piece of territory belonged to another nation. Moreover, the term "China" was coined only 100 years ago by the Republic of China (previously dynasties like the Qing Dynasty, Tang Dynasty, etc.). Nixon's memoirs wrote "politician of LKY calibre appears once in a century, he had the breadth and depth of political issues. He is a big man on a small stage." Many Singaporeans of my generation can truly appreciate him because we have gone through the hardships of a poor country when he took over. The Singapore then was malaria infested, dirty with poor living conditions and without hopes. In some areas of Singapore, as early as 1970s' 200 people shared ONE water tap and water had to be carried on buckets to the house. Unlike many politicians whether western or those from global south, LKY didn't promise the ordinary folks the moon. In one election rally, he told the electorates that he would deliver clean water to their houses. The great difference between LKY and other politicians, he would deliver on his promises but he never said it was free. He was a pragmatic politician who was never bound by ideology. Many Singaporeans argued that he was surrounded by capable people who helped him which was true. An orchestra with good musicians need a great conductor to bring out the best music. After Singapore independence, we used to pay more S$1 for 1 Malaysia Ringgit (about S$1.05 to MR1) till the early 1970s. The present exchange rate is about S$1=MR3.4, this is the reason that many Malaysians work in Singapore.

It's interesting how many of the hot topics we're grappling with today were already being discussed decades ago. Although Lee said in a speech that he doesn't have the qualities to be an entrepreneur, I believe he would have made a great startup founder/entrepreneur if he were born in a different period. While many admire the legacies of entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs, nation-building (in my mind) is also building something from nothing, but on steroids - think geopolitics, national security, infrastructure and other societal needs. Yes, Singapore is a small country and yes, he didn't start from absolutely nothing and yes he didn't do it all himself (no one does). But after travelling to many countries, you can't help but admire what has happened in 1 generation - it could have ended up much worse. And like many startups and companies, there will be uncertainty, ups & downs and even failures, so it will be interesting to see how Singapore navigates the next 60 years. It's a shame that the nation can't relax and has to keep fighting for survival (no natural resources, small population, etc)... playing life on hard mode. Some audio & video glitches that I couldn't rectify, unfortunately. This will be my last video on LKY for a while (if not forever). Simple because majority of people are driven by too much personal emotions, too much ideologies, too much opinionated view. Late Mr Lee Kuan Yew are very very very pragmatic. Practical minded. Even if the rest of world see the move is inhumane, is too harsh. If its pragmatic, he will do it! Solid pragmatic thinking is something very very very rare in modern politicans; regardless in any country. East or West. Which made Mr Lee stands out. This culture pass here in present day Singapore. Admired-and envied-by all Asians. Thailand strived to be like Singapore, Malaysia tried to blackmail Singapore out of spite by threatening to raise water rates or it would halt supply to tiny Singapore. President Duterte of the Philippines promised to make his country another Singapore within his term but failed misserably through his incompetence and corruption. Even El Salvadorean President Nayib Bukele admires Lee Kuan Yew and is known as the Lee Kuan Yew of Latin America.

haha sorry but its really easy to lead a country as large as a small city. Wonder how LKY will do when singapore is as large as japan, US or china. Leading a small country with small population is different from leading a country with a large size, large population, complex geopolitical circumstances

@@albertteng1191LKY said many times that he wouldn't be in the top 100 leaders if he was in China. Plus plenty of other small countries with lots of natural resources that are still currently failures.
@PhiloSurfer Жыл бұрын
@@albertteng1191 This is the usual unthinking trope. You know how many small countries and cities are failed states or failing states? If you think small country is easy to manage, then the solution is simple - just govern at the city level, district level, provincial level. Carve out your country into small regions like Singapore and voila - miracles can happen. In fact, that is precisely how China was able to develop so spectacularly by adopting the Singapore approach. Deng XiaoPing visited Singapore and decided to adopt its development strategy. Goh Keng Swee was dispatched to China as economic advisor. China started to experiment with free trade at the coastal cities (Singapore sized or thereabout) and designated them as Special Economic Zones. Once these cities have proven successful and prospered, the strategy was carried out in other first-tier cities, then second-tier cities, third-tier cities, and now slowly moving westward into the rural areas.

The Philippines could never fathom what transitional justice really means, let alone justice itself as a general concept. "A soft and forgiving culture" is simply the toxicity that kept us all mediocre, and docile towards injustice. "Forgive and forget" is what kept us repeating the same mistakes over and over and over again. We make ourselves incapable of LEARNING just so we get along with our oppressors. Remember, it took over 300 years before we tried freeing ourselves from colonial rule only to replace our colonizers with the same homegrown elite collaborators ruling over us that only end up with them allowing American imperialism to take over and then repeating yet again the same so-called liberation story almost 50 years later (bonus: the only interruption to it also involved the same elite collaborators that also collaborated with the Japanese occupiers). Quite funny that even the so-called "revolutionaries" and "secessionists" that passed are also led by some of the same elite collaborators. And where we are now? We can't even call out certain toxic family cultures and members because of whatever harmony no matter the suffering!

Tyvm for putting together part 1 and 2 very refreshing to look back and appreciate the vision of one man that can look into the future. People should not be surprise because LKY was able to do this because he does due diligence to understand all the surrounding parameters, circumstances, etc.. of an issue and look at it without emotional attachments without bias and come to the conclusion and he was proven right most of the time. It is very rare for a person that is so settle in his own skin and understanding issues in a logical and systematic way and coming out the right conclusion, than u add in his impressive intellect and ability to understand human nature. It is really a hard act to follow, his son LHL has his intellect but not the complete package of LKY.

Agreed. He could have easily lived a comfortable life abroad being a lawyer or businessman since he was bright and spoke English but decided there was more important things to fight for. His understanding of the world was pretty incredible. Most people today in Asia would struggle to know anything beyond their region...yet Lee was well travelled and saw what worked & didn't work - from Africa to Europe to the Americas. LHL is a product of a different time. No WW2, Japanese Occupation or British Occupation to go through. It's difficult to create great leaders without something great to fight for. Pressure really does create diamonds.

I was just sad that Filipino leaders are not heeding on Lee's advise. Instead, they concentrated on politics and let economics be handled among those who are economically advantaged already. The banking system has been monopolized by the oligarchs and thus creating a monopolistic flow of the money supply (most of the oligarchs own banks). There are oligarchs turning politicians and politicians turning oligarchs without any regard to the common Filipino people who are either living in slums or the remotest part with no access to decent living and basic needs. Lately, they're making cities unlivable with real estate prices skyrocketing. But wages are low and infrastructures like mass transport is not even being considered. In Cebu, for example, a politically active business man maneuvered everything in his power just to derail what could have been a major mass rapid transit in this city. Although the project went through, but it was cut into half and has been rerouted to support the businesses of the oligarchs. What's worse, the electorate are at large uneducated. The sadder state is that it cannot be helped at all as politicians took advantage of their economic situation by buying their votes and derailing their opportunity to select those who may be at better position to help them. Such is the sad state of the Philippines.

Lee Kuan Yew one of the few respected politicians, he surely hit the bullseye regarding the Philippines. As I grew older I always wonder why the news never have good news it's always bad, and even if it had one it's trivial. The people here Loves politics so much that they neglect their basic rights and needs over it. Conglomerates have more power in the country as they often dictates what will and will not pass into legislations. And even if the legislations were to pass they always have a bug and holes placed into it. A good example was the big water concessionaires placed a section on the contract that they are not to be audit by any regulatory agency of the government and even sued the Philippines gov't in Singapore. How messed up is that? If the people remain ignorant well may God help us all.

At 10:45, "The other Europeans will realise that... they need the Americans against contingencies, (like) Russia becomes aggressive once again..." This was in 2005. Nine years later, Russia bloodlessly annexed Crimea. Eight years after that, Russia has a "Special Military Operation" in Ukraine. At 12:32, he gives a primer on governance (to the Philippines): "concentrate on economics, not politics. Politics is not simply elections, the singing, and fiestas, and giveaways, but that it is about their lives, their jobs, their wages, their homes, schools for their children, hospitals..." (from 1992). At 27:53 he shows the fondness a grandfather has for his grandchildren. (As a Singaporean, I am touched.) But he also has the wariness (and weariness) of a wise grandfather who knows that whatever he knows, he cannot impart his wisdom and his life experiences to his grandchildren. That his warnings will fall on deaf ears, that the children think that they have arrived, that it is not necessary to strive anymore, to try so hard... and that may well be the reason for Singapore's decline. Camelot cannot last forever. I hope it can. Not for me. I have had the benefit of Camelot.
