Don't put rubberized undercoat on the truck. It locks in a lot of moisture in between the frame and actual undercoating and makes your truck rust even quicker. My suggestion to you is to bedline the under-carrage or just use fluid film and coat the underside of the truck every year or two.

Excellent cross country run. My 16 yr old Son bought exact truck just over a year ago. It didn’t drive and puffed stinky white smoke. He fixed lots and has been his daily for a year now. We are amazing you made it without issue.

Your comment about Motel 6 being the cheapest place you ever stayed made me laugh. My wife and I drove cross country and stayed at Motel 6 every night because we had our mini pig with us(actually made the trip to get her spayed) and Motel 6 has a very lenient pet policy. Every one was very clean and had very nice staff. One of the best motel experiences I’ve had.

@HenryScored with regard to the stigma you mentioned, never heard of it. Grew up in a major tourist area with many hotels and the national chains like Motel 6 were generally all similarly clean and safe if mundane and budget-friendly. The only lasting idea of Motel 6 I've ever had is their Tom Bodett commercials where he said they'd "leave the light on for ya."

Only bad experience I've had in a Motel 6 was because the previous guest smoked in the room when they shouldn't have. It was the one in Fife, WA right outside Seattle. Other than that, no complaints.

Get KBS coating for anything you can see and then put Cor Ban 35 on it(used in aircraft corrosion prevention). After that you'll be set and never see rust again.

98 has variable power steering like a modern truck and a little better tune on the engine. It feels a bit more sporty and GM tends to get things right in their last model years.

Coming from Minnesota, I'm with ARV as a seasoned winter driver. My approach on slippery roads is to pay attention to how my truck is handling, leave lots of following distance and no sudden moves when turning or braking.

I love these trucks. Swap on the 3/4 ton calipers, get the 0411 ECU, electric fans, and the fuel injection upgrade kit that replaces the factory poppet valve injectors.

FYI Nebraska is not actually flat. I-80 follows several rivers and hence the flat ground all around. Most of Nebraska is very hilly.

Being in the US and Canada six times (relatives in TX and BC) I'd really injoy to cross the country to experience the vastness. Once we traveled from Houston, TX to Florida. Somewhere in the Mississippi delta I took over the steering wheel after fueling. Travelling on cruise control we soaked up the landscape and I watched the fuel gauge to drop. Wait! What? Wow that truck is a museum piece. you should consider oiling it periodically instead of undercoating, my understanding is undercoat can trap the rust in and do more harm.

Great video! I've driven that route from Seattle to PDX, Boise, SLC, Evanston, Cheyenne, etc... several times. The drive can be pretty challenging in the winter, especially between Rock Springs & Rawlins Wyoming. Thanks for sharing your road trip!

Can confirm, that stretch of road is horrible. I can't count the amount of wrecks that happen there, but it doesn't help that this year the DOT here is HIGHLY understaffed..... and the wind just kept blowing away any sand/salt they try to put down.

That was fun, always love a good road trip. Driving through the mountains in winter is no joke. I have lived in MT and ID for 32 of my 52 years, and still get surprised by the road conditions at times. I have a similar truck that I bought 6 years ago with under 50K on the odo. I love it. One piece of advice with reviving these low mileage trucks. You probably already know about the GM fuel pump issue where it is cooled by fuel so it's best to not let the tank get below 1/2 or so. But, I was in the middle of a 3K mile road trip with mine when I started experiencing a stumble under load. Long story short, I was having fuel pressure issues caused by a split in the 3" long chunk of rubber fuel hose that connects the pump to the metal lines exiting the tank. This took a long time and much head scratching to figure out. With age and modern fuel blends, that hose had swollen, hardened and split. The earlier trucks (mine is a 91) had no fuel pressure test port or OBD, so I took a gamble and pulled the fuel pump. New pump and MODERN hose chunk installed and the problem was gone. Didn't really need the new pump, but it was relatively cheap, and I did not want to do that swap again anytime soon.

I absolutely love road trips, but they can be exhausting, especially for the driver. I love the scenery on that part of the country. We were actually in Seattle at the end of May and went on an Alaska cruise. Nice video as always, Waldo!! 👌

I owned a 96 and 98’ 1500 both with the 5.7. Mechanics dream truck. Parts availability is high at junk yards and auto parts stores. Very reliable if you don’t get rough with the transmission. Easy to work on a lot of room under the hood. Fuel injection system give the 94-98s better power and reliability than the carbureted 88-93 trucks (look for the chrome side mirrors to know the difference from a glance). I know a Native American man that works as a train mechanic. He travels all over the country for his work in a 96 with 5.0 and manual transmission. The truck looks pretty good for a truck with 3,000,000 miles on it. (Yes he’s had to replace major components over the years.) it has some big dents and paint is wind sanded off.

Technically a grandpa top is a high-rise top where the roofline of the shell is several inches higher than the roof of the truck. The farther back and higher up the more grandpa-ish it is.

I own one just like it with two exceptions. 1. Mine is a K2500 2. Mine is white. It spent the majority of its life out in Arizona and has been in my possession since 2012. As far as I know it’s never seen road salt. The seats are probably the most comfortable of any car or truck that I have owned. Parts are relatively cheap and it’s a simple truck to repair. 14mpg is about as good as it gets in the K1500s. A C1500 with the same engine can get as high as 17mpg.

Noooo, not undercoat (if we're talking bed liner/rubberized undercoat). Use something like fluid film.. or even used motor oil (although that one has its environmental issues). Aside from that. One of these days I want to make a family tip out west. All the pictures/videos I see, its beautiful out there.

Kept up the great work. Favorite project was your flatbed bed rebuild. This truck is one of GM best ever made . What’s known as hard to kill. Won’t be disappointed once you get her back home! Had a GMC 1995 2500 Suburban and a Toyota 1989 4Runner Both are still running strong. Amazing what consistent maintenance will do for a vehicles longevity with 7k oil changes. Dont forget to change out your transfer case fluids they get neglected so often been my experience. Great find kept up the great work. Your explanations are second to none.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Elk Mountain as you drove through Wyoming. I used to own 5 acres at the bottom east side of the mountain. I worked both underground and pit coal mines 10-15 miles north of Elk Mtn for 15 years. My son was born in Laramie. Loving your channel.

Check out using cavity wax, for rust interdiction. In my experience with undercoating paints are OK untill a layer gets compromised by a road stone. Once water gets inside the layer of undercoating and frame... kiss that sweet ride away in just a few winters.

I just restored my original 1992 GMT - 400. I definitely understand why he wants to use the every day truck. These are absolutely the work horses of the Chevy line compared to anything that’s come after. And I say that because I also have a 2003 Z 71 and a 2010 Z 71.

My favorite truck i've owned was my 96 Silverado 2500 long bed. Chevy got it right finally imo, interior was very nice, towing package perfect and motor/trans were very well made. 300k still original drivetrain, no rust and drives great. I will say not very good in the snow or mud with rwd and it's light back there unless the tank is full...

Wow that brings back memories. I’ve made that east to west and west to east cross country trip so many times. First was on Route 2 in an old ‘74 Series III 109”. Ran into three major blizzards that time.

I drove I-80 with a friend in 1976, in the early summer. Nebraska was boring then, and covered in corn; we drove non-stop from Palo Alto to Chicago (taking turns sleeping, sometimes while not driving). My wife lived in Omaha at the time, but she was 15 at the time, and we didn't meet for 7 years. A couple of years later, a friend of mine drove from Palo Alto to his soon-to-be-in-laws house non-stop, by himself. Took him 66 hours, and I never heard what he thought of Nebraska; he was hallucinating a little, from lack of sleep and a diet of Mountain Dew and chocolate, by the time he got there.

It's a nice truck. I have 2 wheel drive and I was terrified of going sideways into a car or a solid object. They do very little salting or plowing here. I got tired of being snowed in so dug out the car, aired down a lot and filled the tank for weight.
