A famous BJJ practitioner told me years ago, "You should to roll with everyone. Every person has value". I"m butchering his comment but it went something like this: People who are LESS skilled than you - They allow you to practice and refine your moves. They don't see what's coming so you can focus and really hone certain moves. People who are MORE skilled than you - They'll show how to improve your techniques as well as expose your weaknesses. People who are the SAME skill - They'll push your endurance and see how well you know your moves.

Hi, I heard this idea in martial arts and back when I played tennis we had this idea too. Let me know what you think of it: You want 3 training partners: 1 is your level, 1 is better than you, 1 is worse than you. This allows you to work strategy with one, defense with another, and experiment with another. But if you only have 1, it's the one that's better than you to push you. What do you think Chewie?

I spent my first year training with only three other guys; a black belt, a brown belt and a purple belt. Needless to say I got smashed every day. The first time I visited another gym that had other white belts, I remember realising that none of the other white belts were able to put me in any danger of getting submitted as I had spent a year trying to survive. It was easy to recover guard an get sweeps. At the same time though, I was also unable to set up any submission, as I hadn't been able to practice attacking people of my same level. After that, I improved very quickly as I wasn't worried of being swept or submitted by other white belts and could just focusing on attacking

I'm so glad you addressed this question. We're doing small groups at my gym as well due to Covid, I'm training twice a week. In one class, there's me (Gracie Combatives belt - sort of an intermediate step between white and blue), and then a handful of seasoned blue belts (2-3 stripes.) And while the others are super helpful and patient, when we roll, I'm on the defense and getting tapped. But then my other class, it's me and a couple of white belts who've just started, maybe a couple of months in, and it's the opposite experience - I'm able to keep the pressure on them and put them on the defensive. What Chewy is saying is absolutely my experience thus far. Thanks Chewy!

Sorry Nick but I have patterned my grappling game after Dean Lister, Jeff Glover, Priit Mikhelson and Ryron Gracie all highly defensive grapplers who spend a great deal of mat time asking/begging to be in defensive mode, and counter here and there for while. I've drilled and rolled offensively for my first 2 years (2002-2004), and got fed up with this same unic mindset. As a seasoned grappler, now, I make fun of defending with my eyes shut and my slow breathing like Lsiter, then once a while, boom counter and sub or catch and release.

Just work your A-game on higher belts and try new stuff on lower belts - that way it’s a win-win situation. In a gym with healthy environment higher belts always help lower belts so they get better faster and then because of it their own level will grow. A white belt from your gym may know how to defend even your best moves just because he rolls with you every time and you explain to him what you’re doing - thus you have to come up with new stuff to make it work. The beauty of it is that this process never stops 😊

Even though Im on surbival mode, when rolling with higher belts I conecentrate more in possition and escape. The cool rhing is every time I get submitted I can see better mi mistakes because their technic is more polished, also I ask what they did it or ask them where I left the opening for the attack. This help me tons and can roll longer and smarter, and the best thing is that even if I dont get a submission I am starting to give more trouble sorta speak to my other peers. I only a white belt bit did Boxing for 3 years and had the same expiriance when I sppared with more expiriance fighters. To me being precise and aware of what your ar doing while rolling is more important, the opening will appear eventually to attack, and rolling with higher belts helps recognizing these oppotunities.

A good idea is to secure the proper information. Learning will require you to be specific, and to address the areas of progression. You can only do that properly with introduction isolation, integration, progressuve resistance and positional sparring. Otherwise your learning will not be efficient. You will learn for sure but not in the optimal way.

Thank you chewy I'm also always rolling with higher belts so once again very insightful ✌️. Comforting to hear most people feel like you're just defending! Also , now that I've gotten a tiny bit better , my spazziness isn't funny anymore and I'm starting to p** higher belts off here and there. What's a good mindset? I'm a whitebelt and the only thing that ever works (for example as a sweep) is that simple on where you just trap the leg+arm on 1 side and like explode with the other leg for instance. Also felt really bad reading this qoute by j. Danaher:"sometimes a white belt with good intentions can be as dangerous as black belts with bad intentions" . Maybe you've got some insight sir? Love the channel. Also we don't have a big gym in my town in s.a. so I travel quite a bit and roll with alotta randoms and this has been happening lately , I feel like I've been spaz for a year and a half though so... 59 year old white belt at a Gracie school, and 4 months in, I only roll with colored belts. Yep, I’m getting crushed, but at my age I avoid spaz white belts that may injure me, not knowing what they are doing. I want to learn escapes, sweeps, defense. When I know I can escape…then I’ll worry about offense which seems to come to me much easier. The blues and purples tap me a lot but it is also like private lessons since they tell me what I did well and what was not great,

I've been training for a while, anticipating getting my Blue Belt in July (hinted at by my head coach lol). I primarily train with higher belts, mostly purples, every now and again I'll get the chance to roll with some newer Blue Belts. I find that my defense has gotten very good, I'm able to defend submissions very well against most guys I go with. Obviously I get caught sometimes just like everyone else but I'd say my defense is strong, my offense however is not nearly as strong as I hoped it'd be. I've started trying to take on more of a pure offense style against guys I roll with now, which has led me to getting subbed more often but actually getting to work my subs is so much more fun

When I roll with my fellow white belts, I get so scared and tense because I feel like I’m gonna lose because that’s what I’m used to. Idk I just feel like since I’m not used to rolling with other people my skill level, I’m afraid to find out that they are better than me
@bragoen3 жыл бұрын
It's training, not competition, they should occasionally leave you openings for you to learn. I've always thought it was the higher belt's job to step back his ego and give you opportunities and guide you. It was an integral part of the culture where I trained but I haven't seen this kind of mentality in a lot of clubs since I've moved. While I've always believed that training with higher belts was the way to there is definitely a risk that it will delay or hinder your offensive game. If you're someone for whom offense isn't natural it will take you so much longer to develop good offensive instincts and the ability to effectively transform a dominating position.
@TJ-vl1ff3 жыл бұрын
As a white belt I have a allot of mental blocks when rolling with higher belts. I feel that when I try to play my game (and be assertive and go hard), they take it as disrespect and then go hard on me. I feel like I have to be timid around higher belts. I experience that when I simply think away belt rank I feel allot more confident and self-assured. Hence I actually question the belt ranking system.
@sbcbaits9943 жыл бұрын
I’m definitely less spazzy around purple and brown belts, but blue belts get the overly strong big guy white belt moves 😂. I’ve found that while I’m in pure survival mode against the higher belts, I’m 100% cognizant of what I’m doing with my arms and hands at all times. THAT makes me a better player than just smashing my peers.
@paisano3163 жыл бұрын
If you’re getting a mental block, maybe you’re thinking too hard? I’ve experienced the same thing, and what helped me was loosening up my mind and flowing more. I love the idea of only training with higher level people. Even when playing guitar it’s sooo beneficial to practice with more talented artists. But I am surprised that he is just getting smashed over and over. As the one white belt in the room wouldn’t you expect at least a couple of the upper belts to “grapple down” to his level to give him opportunities to work his offense in a live scenario? Obviously they don’t have to, but it’s surprising to think of an entire room of upper belts just beating up in the white belt.

Even if they aren't "smashing" him in a cruel way, he still isn't going to be able to compete with blue belts and higher unless he is much bigger or stronger. Maybe "imposing their will while stifling his" by wrapping him up in ways he hasn't been taught yet could be more accurate. Either way, when you can't do stuff and they can do stuff it can be frustrating. I'm a medium higher white belt in BJJ and made it to green in Judo and I love going against higher belts. He should stick it out and think about it like the hyperbolic time chamber. When he comes out whites belts won't be able to touch him.

Defensively rolling with higher belts is extremely beneficial! It sharpens your fundamentals so when you do roll with lower belts you D is solid and you can focus on offense with strong technique instead of a mussel based offense. In the beginning it’s better to get your ass kicked by higher belts and learn a lot vs doing the ass kicking and rolling with lower belts but learning very little!

There’s an old saying. The hottest fires forge the strongest blades. The reason you get better faster rolling with higher belts is the same reason you get better at anything if you crank the difficulty up from the get-go. It hones your muscle memory and reflexes because if you’re not perfect, you’re gonna get destroyed. It can be debilitating, but that’s where your love for BJJ comes into play. You learn the most being crushed by a black belt/red belt. But it’s a harder learning process.

There is a chapter in the Malcolm Gladwell book "David and Goliath" which talks about the importance not just what we learn but how we feel when we learn it. Sometimes, it is advantageous to have others who are at our similar level or below as it encourages us to continue. However, as long as the person isn't discouraged, better opponents will be better in the long run... the whole "iron sharpening iron" concept

I am like the only blue belt at my gym and every single practice is challenging but the brown belts can’t submit me at will anymore:)

I'm a 1stripe white belt and I roll with blue and purple belts and only get to go two days a week and most the time only half will show up feels like I'm not getting the experience cause I'm either rolling with some that is twice my weight or I'm out classed

Thats is exactly how it is for me my first year, I wanted a 145lb 40 year old white belt to start so bad lol, because everyone my age was either 50lbs or more heavier then me or if they were close to my weight way more skilled then me. It got frustrating from time to time that feeling goes away tho.... oss

The brown just let me just try and figure things out then smash me just to let me know my place

I love " rolling" with the black belts, I cant win but i can go hard and loose. If a move works then I know its based on the technique and not dumb luck.

I train with only higher belts because I'm the lowest belt in my adult class. I might not technically be the lowest belt because I have been training BJJ for about a month but I also have a wrestling background I never competed my dad used to and he thought me

One minute into the video I was thinking to myself, I would rather get smashed by higher belts than to get injured by white belts. Bye.

The best way I improved my game is when I rolled with white belts or people with less skill. You get more reps in that way.

would it be alright for a completely new white and i mean first day in to go to advanced classes or should i go a certain amount of time before attending the "advanced classes." And if so how long should i stay in fundamentals before joining advanced classes. I know it'll be tough and im prepared to get dunked on a lot but would it be smart to.

I was most lightest weigh in my class when i began bjj and the class was 90% blue belt so they kick me alot but when i was competing, i was the grinner in the tournaments.

Hey Nick, I'm 4 months in to BJJ and 60 lessons deep so far. I find higher belts avoid me (warm up drills, partnering up and rolling) or maybe it's white belts in general. It's actually quite frustrating as they all like to train among themselves. I often train with people on their first night and I'm getting frustrated by this and lack of progression. I understand fairness and it takes time. With someone of your experience, what should my mind-set be? Avoiding eye contact, suddenly needing water when nobody is left to paid with etc. Seems obvious it's avoidance but how should I approach this as a newbie? any tips would be appreciated!

I have no offense as it is so My only issue on the days i only roll with higher belts is the little i do have is now non-existent so i wouldnt mind even if i roll 6 rounds and only one is with one person my level at least maybe we could both work instead of just trying not to die haha.
