I remember my granpa would start his old diesel tractor in sub zero temps with a news paper :) .... he would roll them up like torch, light them up with lighter :) .. and hold them burning close to intake while cranking , worked every time

@benz merc diesel runs on heat.... heating up the cylinders quicker by allowing it to take in hot smoke.... cummings still uses air intake heaters to start ( maybe have switched to glow plugs at this rate though.. haven't kept up to date..)

@benz merc because the hot air make the fuel combust better a diesel engine heats fuel vaper threw compression but when the air is really cold or your compression is too low the ambient air needs to me warmer so when the engine sucks in the already warm air it can make it even hotter and then the fuel can ignite

I have two IDI’s, turbo and non-turbo. I have not been able to cold-start either engine with WD40 even when spraying a nice fine mist directly into intake manifold. I have rebuilt my NA and now with good glow plugs and 475 psi in each cylinder, no issue starting in 10 degrees Fahrenheit without plugging in.

Now-A-Day's all the Old stuff SUCK❕ I've been try'n to start a '85 6.9 diesel and a '92 6.9 model as well. and hell, Noth'n is work'n except Start'n Fluid. Which I refuse to use, I've seen what it will do to an Diesel engine in the Cylinder's and Piston's and Piston Wall's..............Also, 0ur Diesel Now-A-Days IS Awful also.

Hey Mike - I have been researching getting my 7.3 IDI NA on my 94 F350 started after sitting for a few months. How are you bumping that starter on the passenger side? I am troubleshooting solo, and climbing in and out of the truck to crank doesn't let me check for fuel/air leaks!

Hey man, I need to replace fuel lines on my 7.3 idi, 1992. Do you know what type and size line I can use? I want to just run rubber/ plastic lines. Alot of forums say that if I use the wrong line it will get ate up by diesel. I guess since in 1993 they switched to metal lines there's not alot of info on lines for a 1992

High pressure feed lines are from the IP to the injectors and need to be steel. Low pressure return lines come in a kit from most auto parts/ diesel parts stores. I use to buy all my diesel parts from the local diesel shop since they also sold parts as well as work on diesels.

Using wd40 helps when you have fuel issues such as dirty or clogged injectors or a bubble in the fuel lines...etc. It's not really going to help with cold weather or bad glow plugs. To start a diesel in that situation, try blowing hot air down the intake while cranking. Either a heat gun or even a hair dryer will work.

I still don't have a direct answer for that as I have heard of so many methods it's not even funny. The general consensus seems to be one with a cylinder lubricant I think is how it's advertised. It's what I now use as a last resort.
