Once all collectors from the baby boomers, Gen X, and Gen Y eras are gone, the toy industry will surely go downhill. Kids born from the 2000s onwards don't usually like to play toys because of their accesibility with smartphones and tablets, I even doubt if some of them know how to play street games with their friends

Yep there will be collectors in future generations but nothing like our generation

People forget that the older you get, the less fucks you actually give about other people's opinions. It's very common for seniors here to spend all their money on cigs and booze, so it could might as well be toys

That's cool you'll continue to collect new items well into the future. The area set aside just for collectibles is nearly maxed out, and I'm 99% satisfied at this point, so it's so much easier to pass on new collectibles these days, being able to appreciate what I already have, knowing there's no more room anyway. ;)
@tydiriumhanger13203 күн бұрын
Yep most of what we all want to collect has been made already and new stuff is replacement item with slight improvements

I won't stop. I'll just get pickier about what I buy as time goes on. As I find the balance of my displays and sell what I don't love, I'm sure it will get smaller and even more manageable. Eventually, it won't be nearly as much of a priority. Whatever I end up with, I will always keep my G1 optimus prime. I never had it as a kid and always wanted it. Got it in my early 20s, and to this day, it's still my favorite. It just brings all that nostalgia and fun back from the 80s when I look at it. I'll be sitting in my old folks' home room and watching g1 cartoons with Prime on the shelf:)

People will still collect what they love. They wont collect as much or multiple lines. The main issue won't be aged out as much as it forcefully priced out. The prices now are ridiculous. If this trend continues by the time in 15-20yrs a single 6" action figure will be $100+ each. Maybe toy companies need some type of market correction because toys could easily go the way baseball cards did in the 90's. Over priced, over saturated market and people will quit buying them because when you structure finances around a toy purchase is kind of makes it a job and not fun. All of these brands take for granted our generation and purchasing power we deliver on. If we stop buying there in big trouble.

I’m 48yo & have recently gone through a collection downsizing due to the cost of living crunch. My focus now are characters from the ‘86 movie in the Masterpiece scale, trying to keep the figures as G1 as possible. Have about 80% approximately, and apart from missing characters, will only replace an existing figure if a better one comes along. Yes it’s nostalgic. Yes I appreciate my collection. For anyone younger than 45 or with an incomplete collection, I would suggest to refine what you’re collection entails & roll from there 😊
@ravevolution3 күн бұрын
From my personal experience, I aged out of collecting due to a number of factors. One was not having the disposable income like when I was in college or limited income reasons. Another was the secondary market and prices for some items being set by scalpers. And there was just finding something else that peaked my interest in collecting.

Gonna be collecting until I die! Started as a kid in the 80s, collect what I think is neat, and I don’t see stopping. Just maybe the occasional downsizing of collected lines.

I knew an old man named Blair Cottrill that was 94 years old and still collected toys. He died in 2005, and had collected toys since he was a child, when toys were awful lumps of metal, plaster, porcelain, etc... He kept collecting until he died, and we all bought him toys that we knew he would like, especially anything that would move, light up or make sounds. So, aging out is a choice, if a 94 year old man born before toys were actually fun can stay in the game, then aging out is a choice. Many of us, most of us, collect on a tight budget to begin with, chasing sales and clearance. Only a goofball would throw $90 at a toy when the trend of going on sale for 30% to 70% is only a few weeks away. Only a few people can afford to pay full retail at the moment of release, those sales-sales are the meat and potatoes of the average collector.

I saw Deluxe's video. I'm 50. Its something that I've been thinking about myself over the past couple of years. I got rid of ton of action figures and going though things to get rid of so I can make space for the stuff I have. I will not stop collecting TFs but I buy only what I want. More selective. well, mostly. But I also taken to building diorama/world building for my TFs which is great way to interact/play with TFs. I do have my retirement in sight so I don't have to worry about money, I just wish I could retire now so I can just enjoy life more.

@4:27 To add to your point, I do think the pandemic increased the visibility of the toy community and the culture of adults who enjoy the hobby of toy, art in various forms. For example, I definitely didn’t know. There was an entire world of collectors until the pandemic sat me down in front of my computer every day with nothing to do. While I agree, some collectors came only because of the stimulus checks. I do know that many collectors came and are going to stay because of the enjoyment of the hobby itself. So while I agree that we’re going to lose the larger portion of pandemic, collectors… Some percentage of that group is going to remain and thereby grow the overall culture, even if only to a slight degree.

I freely admit that with that extra money I decided to rebuild my marvel legends that I sold off 8 years prior. It’s been a long road but my ML is more robust than ever. That lead me to several other lines but I’m slowing down. I don’t need everything released and really have learned how to mostly avoid needless purchases.

About to stop Transformers collecting but, only because the Glorious era of G1 2.0 in the mainlines, has been so GOOD to us. I've pretty much got modern representations of all the G1 characters i've ever wanted. Plus i'm very picky about what i grab altogether. I try to avoid hoarding at all costs. Having TOO much crap has the opposite effect of enjoyment, and becomes a pain in the arse. I strive to have a collection that feels modest and easy to manage, yet, comprehensive.
@HappyPursuits3 күн бұрын
Yeah, it’s definitely coming… If you were born, let’s say in the late 50s you are the toy generation. The toy era and everything about it happened during your life. You might be approaching 70. Those of us that lived through the 70s and 80s are likely going to be the last generation. They’ll be some ppl born in the 90s that’ll be into it but once they’re gone by about 2070… we’ll be part of history. And by 2070, most of us in these comments won’t be around and will be history already. Happy happy joy, joy thoughts, lol 😂😂😂

How many of us will get priced out by the carbon tax? And as VR gets cheaper / better, will owning real world items be a thing of the past? Will those that invested in NFTs now be tomorrows millionaires? Just look at past collecting; stamps, coins, model trains, they didn't seem to hold their popularity. And how far will wokeness go? How long until owning offensive figures becomes the new book burning? (Anything "male gaze" related will be first into the pile.)
