Watched this video, tried it and immediately worked within 15 mins. My dog is now calmly laying down in the crate. I used to think he always hated the crate from all the crying and biting the crate, and I would go over to soothe him. Stopped soothing him and let him cry, and in 10 mins he was calm and playing with his toy inside. Will definitely be repeating this daily

Hey @@Alucard697! It's becoming better everyday but it definitely was not an easy process! We took a lot of time to be home with him and during the nights/afternoons the crate is always next to us. This way, he's not forced to sleep alone which is very hard in the beginning. Since we put the crate in our bedroom, literally next to us where he can see, he improved a lot. Everytime he cried we did what Will does, a loud noise on the top of the crate and he started to understand that whining for attention doesn't help. Next steps for us are to start leaving him alone for 15-30 minutes on the crate until he gets used to it and then when he does, we can start to take the crate further and further away during the nights. Also, one thing I understood from experience is that not all dogs will love the crate and maybe forcing them to always be there is not the best option. Our dog was abused before being with us so the crate doesn't bring to him the best memories, Patience and understanding is the key, good luck! 🙌

I used this training and it worked within a DAY. Our 4 month old puppy hated the crate at first! He would rip at it with his mouth and cry non stop. I sat down with him yesterday morning with this method and within an hour he was settled and sleeping. We have just had our first night in the crate and the house has visibly relaxed. I got a new puppy 2 weeks ago, and although having dogs for over 50 years. I watched this video a few times. Moved the crate next to my desk left the doors open followed your instructions and after 3 days, I had to close the front door on the crate to open the window. The puppy must have thought I was putting him in so went in the crate and laid down ❤😂. You know your stuff sir. Watched this video last night did like a 8 min crate train and that same night the puppy spend the entire night sleeping in it's crate. Quietly and only made a fuss when he really had to go, he went immediately off on his potty training pad and went back into the crate, no meltdown. I highly recommend anyone watching to complete the video. I've been trying to crate train my puppy for a week and just 1 of his exercises made my puppy crate trained. I thought it was a spoof but today as I did my chores a put the puppy in and it immediately understood to be calm and quiet and wait until I'm ready to let it out.

if my aussie went in the crate on his own i would have had a stroke and possible heart attack! But he runs free now but if i say crate my mutt goes in no problem.. the aussie takes off like he is in the kentucky derby.. he would outrun the fastest horse... but if i put his kong toy in with frozen peanut butter he goes in and waits till i say kong.. he turns around and i shut the door. he is quiet after that. We have a new mini aussie now almost 8 weeks old and he is ok in his crate but we tell alexia to play gentle dog music... he falls asleep.

We've got a golden retriever 1 week now. First night in the crate he struggled, since then we've cordoned off part of the room at night to give him space to leave the crate when he wants as we've been leaving the crate door open and he goes in voluntarily during the day and night when tired. We feed him just outside the crate door and he's been great, to the point I was concerned he liked the crate too much. In saying that, he chews everything, including fingers. Early days but long may it last

@@chro1843 i leave crate doors open but we have a bowl of water in the room and i have noticed that if something scares the 19 week old mini american shepard (mini aussie) he will sleep at the foot of the bed but never up towards the center of the bed. the mutt and big aussie are great but imma say 1 time a week the puppy ends up in the bed. he is NOT afraid of storms or anything.. i have found the puppy in my mutts crate and the mutt in the puppy's crate lol glad i looked before i put the food down lol

@@chro1843 ok finger biting can be done the nice way or the direct way.... nice way.. redirect with toys or snacks... direct way keep a leash and collar on him / her and when he/she chews anything give him a snap on the collar.. i have found the 2nd option works best but... positive training takes ALOT longer. dont get it wrong dont pull him / her off of their feet or anything..lol just a snap on the leash and a firm no works wonders. get the puppy under control now while he / she is young wont be an issue later... just my opinion.

I’m turning 30 and getting my first dog this summer. I’ve wanted one for 20 years. I have been looking for a puppy since January 2023. My entire life I haven’t had people around me with a good knowledge about dogs, but I feel like I have absorbed a lot of knowledge on my own. You, McCann dogs and Victoria Stilwell, and talking to people with a deep understanding of their dogs needs, being calm, assertive leaders. I have also been in treatment for PTSD. I have heard testimonies of people whose dogs were abused before they came into their forever home. I am so excited to see what he picks up and I will certainly make mistakes, but I will not take the squeaking as crying, like some owners tend to do. It’s very hard to let the puppy sit in their crate and whimper, if you interpret the whimper as crying, then it’s harder to help them calm down without giving in. Thank you!

Been a godsend for enforced naps when overtired and allowed me to get work done. I now work upstairs most of the day while he naps in his crate and I'm not sure we will ever stop having him sleep in his crate

My best tool for crate training my pup was my other dog who was already crate trained! Pup fell into the crate routine so easily with an adult example to follow. We have a few crate rules. Crate is for dogs only, so no kids etc. Dogs ALWAYS get a reward for going into crate. Crate door is only ever opened when dogs are calm. Crate is only mandatory at night and very occasionally during the day if we have to be out for more than about 15 mins. That’s about it I think. If you go to the treat jar, pup will anticipate and rush to the crate in case that is where I want her, and it’s the place she goes[ to eat high vale treats. Both my dogs love their crate. I was ignorant of how good crates were before I got my older dog. Now I wouldn’t have it any other way. There is always somewhere safe and calm for them to be if I have to know they are safe and contained for any reason.

Hi Will! Your advice was invaluable with my last foster pup. Question for you about potty training... The one difficulty I encountered last pup was potty training. There were several factors that made it hard to get to the potty area quickly. -he was very timid the first few weeks about leaving home and it took 1-2 weeks of carrying him around progressively wider areas to get him comfortable with 'outside'. (Hallway, stairwell, first floor, courtyard, alley, street, block, etc, one step at a time.) -It was the dead of winter so I had to bundle him up which slowed the process more. I let him wear his coat and leash around the house to get him comfortable with those things and not associate them with 'scary outside'. But yeah, this added more steps to the process. So basically it's just a slow an somewhat arduous process to do each potty break. I work from home so the frequency isn't the issue, it's just that it takes 10 minutes to get the puppy outside without scooping him up and manhandling him into a jacket and carrying him outside, which isn't how I want him to be accustomed to pottying obviously. Do you have any tips or videos for doing potty training in these kind of more challenging apartment living situations, where it's not as simple as opening the back door? Maybe tips on how to use a puppy patch or puppy pads more effectively, without creating bad habits? (I reorganized the apartment to control the environment better, which worked amazingly well, except it required moving the pee pads and we had a bunch of frustrating accidents because of my poor planning.) Every other facet of his training was A+, but the apartment potty training situation is something I want to figure out before my next foster pup, and I'm not really sure how to proceed. thanks!

I have never had a problem crate training my dogs in the past, until now! I brought home a beautiful Golden Retriever 3 days ago that had been flown from Chicago via LAX to Portland Oregon. All I can say is NEVER AGAIN. I believe in spite of the breeder stating the 23 week old puppy was partially crate trained, they lied and I think the outrageous itinerary helped traumatize this pup badly where she fights me the 2 times I have crated her so fiercely I’m afraid one of us is going to end up hurt. Once she is in she makes a fuss for a short time and I use your corrections to quiet her. Fortunately she gives up quickly and sleeps through the night. ANY ADVICE YOU MIGHT GIVE WILL BE APPRECIATED. I will heed the advice in this video but my biggest concern is her or myself getting hurt in the process. I’m sure we look like 2 cage fighters when I am trying to get her in the crate and the 2 times I have gotten her in the crate I was exhausted following the process and she looks like she could go on indefinitely. I should note I am 72 and never thought that crate training would be a issue but I think the trauma is the base of the problem and I don’t know how to undo that experience or create a positive experience but I will hope for the best with the new information in this video. You are so loving, and kind, and do positive training with a minimum amount of necessary corrections, and... The only thing that leaves me a bit confused is this crate thing. In my country, it is ILLEGAL to keep your dog closed in a crate. It is considered a violation of animal rights. They can be left in a safe room or pen, but they need to have enough space to walk around, and always have access to water. And if a crate is used as a safe den, it should always be kept open. my 3 month staffy still won’t go in to settle in her own, but she eventually settles and naps when I leave her in there or leave the house.. challenging my dog hates the crate is huge!!! We've been trying to get him trained to go outdoors but we've been ready to pull our hair out. What about a rescue dog that spent its entire early life (one to three years ) in their crate in a larger kennel in a warehouse of 200+ plus other dogs Ginger is approx. three and half years to four years old now and she has been acclimated to having her frozen kong or a frozen beef bone on an old dog bed on our sunporch (she does not sleep there. This bed is used only for "bone on the bed,.") She is not eliminating in the house,, she is not destructive in the house. She is fully trustworthy in our home. She has been trained to sit on the sunporch and watch the world and people go by. She has been trained to lay down, relax and watch the lawn mowing guys on the tractor go by, or the bikers ride by etc. She only barks when sounding an alarm. (She does get PLENTY of physical exercise, mental stimulation and physical fun throughout the day.) I am age 72, retired and I take my dog pretty much with me everywhere. Or my retired husband is home.

It seems to me that your dog makes the right choices anyway so crate training wouldn’t be be essay … it might be a good idea to train your dog not to associate a crate with bad things though… just imagine how awful it would be for him if he had to go to the vets overnight and the crate brings back terrible memories ?

This method just saved me with my puppy. she would whine and pounce on the crate trying to get out. At one point she bit the bars and somehow got her small jaw and teeth hooked onto the bars sideways and she couldn’t get her muzzle unstuck. I was terrified trying to figure out how to get her out potentially even needing to cut or pry open the crate bars because of how stuck she was. She got out safely on her own after calming down and wiggling herself out. Later after that I watched this video I learned what to do. But I decided to shush loudly instead of hitting the crate, it’s the same concept but she responded better to that. Shushing is also easier because I can do in from afar without needing to move to hit the crate. How this method worked so quickly? I don’t know, but It took only 3 minutes for her to understand. Like she actually stoped thrashing and crying like it was torture to be in her crate when it’s not. I’m relieved she’s safe and behaved now. Her Kong also played a role in helping her be distracted and settle. Will is definitely a great trainer with good experience who knows what to do. I’m so grateful she’s relaxed now and I’m learning how to be a good loving leader ❤

We have a whippet for 2 weeks now. She's 7months. She went in the crate without much problems from the first night. Wined 3 times and after soothing her for some minutes, she slept all night every night for 2 weeks. Last 3 days, she started wining to get out quite early in the morning. She bites in the door as well. There is drewl everywhere. Last night she started at 2.30 am wining loudly. I made the mistake letting her out and eventually crashed next to her all night: me in the couch and her next to me on her dog couch. She just wants to be near me. When I am home she follows me everywhere, fearing I will leave her. This surely doesn't help things. The crate is in the storage room next to the kitchen and it's a plastic carbench type with side entrance (doortype: rotates upward). She is rarely in the crate during the day. Only happened once for 4 hours and this went fine. My wife doesn't want the crate in the living room. Don't know how to proceed now.

Any advice on getting my dog to stop pooping in the cage?? She doesn’t go potty in the house but when I started crate training she has now pooped in cage 3 days in a row

Yes, but when you do that to get your dog into a crate with food,every time you want him to get into the crate he’s gonna expect food. How do you get him to just go into the crate without giving him food once he’s trained?

I've just got a lab - 8 weeks old. I slept on the sofa with him in the crate on the first day but he cried constantly 😭 I had no sleep and was exhausted all the next day but I left him in the crate again while I slept upstairs and he was crying again. Thought it would be best to just let him cry it out but now I think he hates his crate already. Anyway, I am going to try this again and use this method. Thanks for offering these great tips. Would it be best for me to move my work desk into the living room so he can see me? At the moment he's crying when I leave the room

I centralize really exciting things around the kennel. Food time, they have to go kennel and wait with the door open. Someone comes over, kennel and then the reward for being good in the kennel is the freedom to greet them. Going for a walk, they have to kennel before I take them and I will gather their things before calling them to get them hooked up. They offer the kennel as a behavior to get things very frequently, and they also assume treats like kongs and bully sticks are kennel designated areas. Also really important to kennel train in different situations. I had my dog kennel trained at work but the same thing at home was really difficult to train. They did not generalize well and I had to work each situation at its own separate pace like I was training two different things even though it was essentially the same. They may not behave the same at the vet, groomer or your families house because they don't really understand (especially at a young age) that it is the same exact ask for each situation.

what is the crate for? is it used until a certain age? or is it forever? Even as an adult, when the dog is left home alone, should it stay inside the crate?

The crate can be used all the dogs life if you want it to be. My dig is nearly two… she loves her crate and when she wants a bit of quiet time. She just goes in it herself. She always chooses to go in it at night . If your dog chooses not to go in it and never damages your house and always makes good choices, then you’d not have to use the crate anymore .. I had one dog who just stopped using it after a year or so and she was fine :-)

I have one crate trained dog (8 yrs old lab/boarder collie mix) and one who is not crate trained (13yrs old, lab/golden retriever mix-he didn't need to be IMO). When my crate trained dog got to the point where he could be left out of the crate while we were gone, we left the crate door open, and half of the time when we returned home, BOTH dogs were curled up in the crate. It really is a safe space for them until the end of their lives.

Crate training a puppy is difficult. As soon as you put the dog in the crate and go to bed, it becomes a not so good space. I have struggled with this even though a sent blanket, fav toy, and a treat have been used. What is the answer. Because now the crate is associated with us leaving her

Hi! Amazing stuff you post here. We have a 5 month dobermann that will sit for hours in the crate in the car however in the crate in the house it's a different story... He barks we whines for hours, he just does not settle. I know he likes the crate because he is fine in the car. I've moved the crate around the room aswell with still no luck. Any suggestions? My dog has possessive aggression and he tends to take his items or unwanted items to certain areas. My concern is that with getting a crate, he’ll retreat there and then there’s no way to have him let go of the item that he’s resource guarding. How can I work around this?

I have three adult coton de tulear dogs (1 neutered male and 2 female) living free in our house. Now I'm getting a female cane Corso puppy to live here. I find it extremely hard to crate her and why. Mayby I should give it a try and see how it'll work out if I just let the puppy to be with other dogs when I and my wife are away?
