My husband toilets our Kangal pup before we go to bed at about 11pm, then I was toileting the pup again between 3-4am, and then hubby let him out for the morning in our yard at 7am. It wasn't long before I noticed that our puppy was really unwilling to get up out of his crate at 3am, and so I left him to sleep, and he sleeps through the night now :) He is 16 weeks.

If I leave my cocker puppy alone she has a fear response and does the toilet. But if keep her near me she almost immediately settles all night and goes in the morning. Win some, lose some.

When my puppy was 15-16 weeks I thought that she shouldn’t socialize to much as I wanted her to be a guard dog. I even looked for ways how to train the guardian skills better. Oh dear, how wrong I was! I changed my mind in a week. The mastiffs do have their guardian skills built in already. Socialization as much as you can is the most important. 😊

So pleased to here your “gaurd” dog/puppy being too socialised reply. As an X-postlady far too many people accept their dog going loopy at people coming to their door as they think it’s the dogs job to protect the house. I’ve had an X-racing greyhound growl at a person who came to check my electric meter, she NEVER did this, most sociable dog I’ve ever had! I was quiet keen for said chap to read the meter & clear off, as in my mind, if he made Gem go on the offensive there was something not quite right about him.

My first Husky was so stubborn with the food that she actually started to fall over from not eating for days! Got her checked out to find nothing wrong with her and turns out she was holding out for the apples we previously gave her. This pup was the most head strong I've ever had. I've got a Black Lab now, OMG talk about cruse control.

who doesn't love a black lab ❤️❤️❤️, well, really, any color lab? 🤣😂🤣 Ours is just 15 weeks - of course, very bouncy in spurts, and we take long free-running and leashed walks, but SO smart and will do anything for a kibble. 👍Recall at hundreds of feet is excellent! 👏👏👏 Potty got training off to a bad start due to 2 weeks of storms, so we do use pee pads and she rarely "signals" to go out to potty, but I am better trained now 😁 and it will get better as she matures. Good luck with your pup

I like the comment about removing the food if the dog won't eat it. My late dog Jack would come back from staying with Grandma all of a sudden picky over his food. I would just pick it up. End of. Feed him next day as normal and he would eat no problem. Very healthy dog that lived to be 16

Will, can you do a video talking about appropriate expectations for training at various ages of puppy? (obv depending on breed). I have my second Akita pup and she is now 9 weeks old, starting to answer to her name, and knows a good sit. Having a lot of confusion about "lay down" though. obv I am not expecting her to retain 'release' and 'stay' yet. But I want her training to be structured, stimulating, but also effective and possible.

You can and absolutely should get up in the night for puppy bathroom breaks (no talking/playing, right to the bathroom and back). They have small bladders and need to go, that's so horrible to ignore it. Eventually, it will stop, no problem.

First, I would like to congratulate you on this series which I think is excellent and has helped me enormously. There’s just this one issue where I disagree with your advice. My 12 week old Whippet Lurcher cross sleeps in a crate in my bedroom. From day one I put her out to wee prior to bed at 9pm. The first month she woke twice in the night approx 1am and then 5am to have a wee before going back to sleep ‘till 7am- 8am. At 18 weeks she was sleeping from 9pm - 7am every night, then, going out for a wee and poo and straight back to bed until 8am. She wakes me up when she needs to go out. I don’t agree with waking a puppy up to go to the toilet in the night as your training your puppy to wake you up in the middle of the night - why would you do that? Waking me up when she needs the toilet has not resulted in her crying for attention. Also, how would you know when your puppy would go through the night if you keep waking it up ?! I don’t give her anything to eat or drink after 7pm.

I did the getting up during the night by setting the alarm for all my dogs over the years and it did go perfectly. Of you course you are exhausted for a month or two but it is like with human babies. It is the same commitment.

Late comment but just to agree with the planned, pre-emptive toilet trips, have done that with both of ours alongside crate training to fast results, weaning off from 3 trips, to 2, to 1 then an earlier morning. I see clients at our club who use pads and they're still struggling at 6 months, after using this technique they often resolved it in a couple of weeks

Hi! These are great videos dedicated to everyday questions from non-professional dog owners! Thank you very very much for them! My cane corso is 3,5 months old now and we strugle to find a right way for handling those toilet issues at night... For us it's not an option to ignore a puppy until 06:00. If we do that (of course, we tried) then he's peeing, crying for some time in his cage because of discomfort, then doing a bigger toilet thing, you know...and then we, anyway, are washing cage, dog, floor, bathroom in the middle of the night...So...it's really better for all of us to let him out. But we're doing it once he "asked for it". In opposite way - I mean waking him up at 01:00, 04:00 etc..he will be so sleepy - you'll need partially drag him and partially bring outside on your hands. And he, anyway, will just look at you with his sleepy, surprised and a bit scared eyes...like asking "Why did you break my sweet dream? What are we doing in this dark scary street?"..and no peeing. Just looking...)) So the best working option for us now is to let him out when he "asks for it". Without any emotions - just quickly go outside and back. Let's see if it works further. But we just do not see any other working solutions for now...

For my 1st 2 months (her 2nd and 3rd), I kept her to sleep in a room across the house because her random cries were keeping me awake. I simply set my alarm to wake me up every 4 hours to take her outside. It worked like a charm. It was tough on my sleeping, but at least I got to sleep without random distraction.

My spaniels are not trained as guard dogs (of course). However an intruder got into my hime 18 months ago and they switched into Guard Dog mode immediately! I was amazed, they seemed to grow in size and Snarl like I’d never seen before. They chased this guy right out of the house. So I guess your Mastiff would be there if it were necessary.

The more "friendlies" that your dog meets, the more able it will be to discern the needle in the haystack that is different and has malice in their heart to do evil to some member of your family - even if it is a mentally unstable person who may someday in the future be someone who will exhibit behaviors that increasingly need more watch time because they will do something unexpected someday soon. Your dog will know that if it is a protective breed. The only sure way for him to be able to pick out the bag is for him to know how good people act the variety of way good people act and the many different looks and possible equipment (canes, walkers, wheelchairs etc) of various people. That is the way you make sure that they do not react out of fear and hypervigilance which is anxiety-producing and which causes your dog to make a mistake. If you do not socialize in a multitude of different places with different people different types of people so that they can see the variety, you are sitting your dog up for failure.

Hi Will and Rachel, Reference to the night time toilet routine! We are due to collect our Rottweiler puppy in the next 3-4 weeks. I have already purchased your puppy course and boot camp course and have been going through thus with my family so we can hit the ground running when the puppy arrives. Our puppy will be 8-9 weeks old when we collect him. What i would like advice on is that we fortunate enough to have a dog door into our secure garden. Do we start training with the dog door for toileting from the very start and leave the dog door open during the night with the hope that he will soon associate the door with the toilet and take himself out in the night time or do we close the door at night for his own safety due to him been so young. With our past dog which was a rescue Husky we trained her by teasing her through the pet door with food and then making the worlds biggest fuss when she went the toilet, she only had a couple of accidents in the kitchen and got to grips with the pet door very fast but she was a full grown Husky when we got her. This will be our first puppy so we're slightly unsure if starting with the pet door from day one is wise. Thanks, Phil

Getting puppy next week or two, it's took me 2 years to get strength to get one. @willanthetoncaninetraning I will have a standars poodle puppy and will bring him home at 11 weeks. I will than have 4 weeks off from work. After those 4 weeks he will have to stay at home (crate traning from day one) for 8 hours during the day. I don't want him to "feel bad" for peeing in his crate (around 100x60x60cm and there wiil be space with pads) and it is natural. Should I than let him cry in the night and make a decision to pee in the crate or takie him out overy few hours during the night? I just don't want him to suffer when he needs to pee and I'm not around.

I'm a bit confused and I want to make sure I'm doing all the right things to have positive reinforcement with him. I don't want to put a mat or teddy in as he has tried to rip everything like that apart, I want to be able to tell him to go to the crate himself and he will want to. I don't know if I should just put him in at a certain time even if he doesn't like it will that not be a negative thing for him and he won't like it and won't want to go in it or will he understands over time that it is fine cause I'd like it to be a safe place for him and whenever he naps or sleeps he goes in there willingly.

@@MsDjNAS that's what I did and it worked, I upped the gap each week and she coped with it well, and nothing to drink after 8pm was another thing. He sounds like he's doing really well and like I say to the wife " they're not puppies for ever, thankfully "

You want your dog to be friendly with people you invite into your space and home. You want your cane corso to look to you to determine whether or not they need to protect you.

Just explain to me :D why do you need a guardian dog who is not friendly these days? Are you hiding diamonds in the middle of a gang controlled neighbourhood? If you have some psychological insecurity you should probably not get any dog because it is not going to solve your problems.

I like your channel A LOT, but forcing your dog to eat something they don't like or else it gets taken away is cruel...just do some trial and error with foods until you find something they like. Imagine you having to eat a meal you dislike every day for the rest of your life and nothing else. A vet would never suggest that. There could be another reason too like stomach upset, gassiness or food allergies that aren't super obvious to you as a 'medical' issue.

Stop putting yourself in your dogs shoes. I could say "imagine being forced to shit in public, fully nude, in front of several people", and you can make a dog taking a shit, sound cruel. Dogs will push boundaries, if you always reinforce negative behaviour, you'll simply get more of it.

They literally said take your dog to the vet to rule out any allergies/ problems before being strict with it.

I caught my puppy eating pigeon droppings. I think you're overestimating your dog's taste buds.
