It was said of him that in more than seventy films, he never once gave a bad performance. He was a charming and unconventional man with a “wild streak” and a compulsion to test himself at every turn.
Subscribe for more Hollywood biographies and stories! bit.ly/HollywoodCollectionSub
At his peak he became a leading man of immense attractiveness who refused to take fame and adulation seriously while in his later years a weary cynicism seemed to reflect the reality of the world around him.
William Holden’s achievements as an Academy-Award winning, internationally-acclaimed actor are revealed in clips from some of his best films, such as The Golden Boy, Born Yesterday, The Country Girl, Sunset Boulevard, Stalag 17, Sabrina, The Bridge On The River Kwai, The World Of Suzie Wong and Network. Also featured are on-camera interviews with actors Robert Wagner, Robert Mitchum, Cliff Robertson, Stefanie Powers, Glen Ford, Nancy Olson and Susan Strasberg and co-workers like Sidney Lumet, Robert Wise and Arthur Jacobson.

In his youth there is no more handsome man in Hollywood. As his beauty receded with age, his acting got better and better. He was authentic, dramatic, and natural! When that smile emerged, his face became beatific! Bill Holden is one of my favorite actors and he will never be forgotten.

Good job of presenting Mr Holden. The comments from the other actors and the directors are especially thoughtful and touching. He was a friend of my grandfather, who visited the Safari Club on occasion. I wish I had known him. He was as Lumet says, charming and heartbreaking. My all time favorite actor, and The Wild Bunch and Bridge on the River Kwai all time favorite movies. He was light years better than the pale, fey, limp imitations of men we have parading around on the screen today. And the films have never been equaled. Hollywood just went to hell when it went corporate.

My grandfather knew Bill Holden in Africa - he was a great friend of Bill's partner Ray Ryan at the Kenya safari club they owned and my grandfather and his second wife liked to visit them there. I still have a grand photo of Daddy Dick and my Aunt Luise with Bill on the terrace there. I wish they'd taken me along! I was only about ten years old at the time so I suppose it wouldn't have been possible. Holden was magical - as much now as he was then. Simply gorgeous.

He was the biggest box office draw of the 1950's.....an entire decade. That should have been an award in itself. I loved him in The Bridges of Toko-Ri....one people hardly talk about when reminiscing William Holden. Holden, in Love is a Many Splendored Thing, was hiding something in his performance, he knew his wife would never divorce him, he was lying to himself and to Jones and that's what we picked up on in the movie.....it's as romantic as An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant.... One of my most favorite episodes of I Love Lucy is with William Holden. He was a remarkable actor and as far as I'm concerned, a genius.

What does "He gave up his life to this industry" even mean? He made millions out of it. It granted him freedom and riches beyond most people's imagination. I'm a life long fan of his work. But it's incredible to read some of the nonsense being written about him in these comments .... as if he was some kind of saint who made immeasurable contributions to humankind. The truth is he killed a fellow human being during his time on this planet and, according to his children, was an absentee father and a serial wife cheater. This doesn't make me like his work any less. But it does make me wonder what planet some of these commenters are on. "Gave up his life to this industry"? Ridiculous.

Helenaville I totally agree Helen. To read some of these comments you would think he was the second coming, the messiah. Mr Holden was an exceptional actor who had his faults like most people. In his younger days he was a big game Hunter, which I believe he regretted as he got older. That does not excuse the magnificent animals he destroyed just for the "thrill".

He was possibly a hollow man: his brothers both died in plane crashes (one was shot down, the other was lost while flying on a business trip). His marriage was a flop (he was a philanderer). Hitting the bottle might have been the only way of handling the guilt and torment that he woke up to every day.

William Holden was so much deeper and intelligent than Hollywood portrays. Curiously no one ever comments that depression and alcoholism are diseases...and often the torture and even madness create the most magnificent art and gives us more honesty and integrity than we can imagine. Holden was amazingly talented. How lucky we are to have shared his beauty, his grace...his quest for a social truth in the scripts he chose, his magnificent voice and presentation and the quintessential American style throughout, all so mesmerizing. How courageous of him to continue his work ...a recluse's reluctant love affair with the media of film.

The contrast between actors in Holden’s day and those today couldn’t be more profound. Yes, they did their wild things and weren’t always faithful husbands but there was a steadfastness, honesty, and intelligence in them that is rarely seen today, save for a handful of exceptions (e.g. Matthew McConaughy). Today’s actors seem to think that making self-righteous political statements while walking the red carpet at some awards show or yucking it up on late night shows represents courage or convictions. Always adored William Holden. Hope he’s found his well deserved place in Heaven!

Funny thing is I first saw him, on I Love Lucy,. Me being a little girl then, not having seen many movies then, I had never heard of him. But Lucy was acting like he was the cat's meow, I wanted to know more of this William Holden. Having seen more of his movies since then, he is a great actor, with a good attitude, and well liked in Hollywood community. ✌

He was my favorite so glad he turned OUT to be the man i thought he was and he was very handsome AND wouldn't have aged as much as he did in 50s and his 60s it was his alcohol problem but he had s smile anf personality that came right off the screen and was infectious because as they said he wss real and all around good guy.

I truly miss actors who at least on screen set a strong moral example. Many, admittedly and unfortunately, did not hold the same off screen. Nevertheless they offered a positive example to impressionable youths - like me.

Very informative and concise doc plus a most fitting tribute to a great actor, man, conservationist - and, against all odds, family man. "He had an honesty that worked for him, and it was not something that he was playing." In your debt for posting. Many thanks

He seemed like a serious and passionate man like a man spend wonderful to look at and wonderful voice and I believe he had a great spirit curiosity of the higher order of things a real gentleman. It came across and every road that he played. He was an American original and I also feel that way about Elvis Presley I felt that he had something much more beyond the rock and roll star. There are some wonderful human beings ferment and they capture my heart
