The legend of William Tell comes from Switzerland. While much of it cannot be proven, this legend emphasizes the conviction and bravery displayed by an individual now considered a national hero of that country. According to Swiss lore, William Tell was a 14th century hunter skilled in using the crossbow. At the time, a tyrant named Hermann Gessler insisted that everyone should honor him; Tell refused to do so. Gessler decides to punish Tell. Knowing of Tell's hunting skills, Gessler orders that Tell's little boy be forced to stand in the public square with an apple upon his head, and for his father to shoot the apple with an arrow. Tell accomplishes this successfully and the townspeople rejoice. Tell, however, has a second arrow and Gessler demands to know why. Tell responds that it was intended to kill Gessler if his little boy had gotten hurt. Versions of the legend vary, but most end with Tell eventually killing Gessler with an arrow. This act inspires his fellow countrymen to rise up and fight for Swiss freedom. Edit: and nobody, no one is mentioning Claes Bang 💯🔥 wtf...

Incredible stuff, especially from a steadfastly neutral country that accepted Nazi gold from both Germany itself and occupied countries. That attitude seems to live on today at Credit Suisse, but I won't derail this discussion further. Every country has it's heroes and villains, and this is clearly a work of fiction.

This seems suitably epic. And I like that the movie realizes that the actual point of the legend isn't about marksmanship, it's about having to shoot at your son in a public town square. And about how you need to make the people who make you do that pay.

YeLizardLords: The William Tell Overture, from the Opera, William Tell, was composed by Gioachino Rossini. It was coopted and used as the theme music for the Lone Ranger TV Series. It was composed in 1829, long before there was a Lone Ranger or Tonto, or television for that matter!

always funny that while the bad guys have no idea what the point of a a big, broad, heavy thing on their hand is the good guys always know they that sometimes you can 'shield' yourself from a lot of things like arrows. I wonder if they figured out a good name for this historically obscure device. Face Protector 300 has a good ring to it i think. but maybe something shorter.

@Raldazzar2Күн бұрын
Just because they CALL it by its colloquial name.. did you even WATCH the trailer? at 0:55 somebody says 'who are you?' and he replied.. Wilhelm tell... so desperate to post your opinion you didn't wait 55 seconds? It's a movie. it wants to make money.. calling it Wilhelm Tell will not draw the same as William Tell. as everyone and their brother knows the story of William Tell. The story of the three brothers was not renowned despite it being from the brothers grimm book, it was only once it was made into an opera and the overture was written that it became 'worldwide' and at that point Wilhelm was William. do you get this upset when they change races/genders in stories too?!

Really digging deep to find historic heroes I guess. This seems silly. Also it's hard to admire someone whose primary weapon is a crossbow. It's just a matter of aiming and you get one shot and that's pretty much it. It's like being really good at using a one shot musket. Unless you have 20 more behind you, you're not going to be that impactful. I feel like they're trying to separate from Robin Hood analogies but it just feels blah.
