When it comes to landscape photography, understanding the histogram is a key technical skill.
In this short video, I’ll teach you the histogram, how to read it, and how to use it when shooting out in the field.
Trust me, this might seem like a “boring” thing to know about, but it will become your new best friend when you take landscape photos!

I knew what it was but not how to use it or what it represented so have been ignoring it because it hurt my head! All now explained, thank you! I like the short vids by the way, massively helpful 🙏🏼👍🏼

that's awesome, Lynette! Once you understand it, you wonder how you got by without it. It takes all the guess work out of exposure.

Nice gloves Will. Could you please share the link to them. I like the semi opening, so there is no need to remove the whole gloves

Hi, came across your channel and just love the ‘straight to the point’ style+ practical hacks/tips. Question on your approach for landscape exposures and there are so many methods folks use including bracketing, editing etc. I guess the histogram is one’s best friend but wanted to check what metering mode are you usually on? Do you use aperture or shutter priority with one of the metering modes like spot for really high contrast scenes and may be apply the zone system or is it almost always manual mode ( in which case metering mode is not that relevant) and just go with the histogram (ETTR). Sometime shooting in aperture mode is convenient and let the modern day cameras do all the heavy lifting with their advanced electronics. I have seen folks who just use spot to say meter 2-3 different spots in a high contrast scenario- like foreground, subject and background. They take a note of the shutter speed the camera’s algorithm throws up and then just move to manual to use a mid tone baseline shutter speed to start and play around with per their creative desire. OR so long as the overall histogram is not getting blown on either side, just rely on local adjustments in LR or PS to deal with shadows or highlights as the case may be? I guess I have been reading & watching so much theory and not practicing enough, that I am in constant experiment mode with the technicalities and cant really determine a fast and accurate way to nail it when a scene presents itself.

Thank you! Honesty, it’s just easier to expose to the right and reveal darker tones in post. I don’t use any meter, only the histogram. This is more accurate. I much prefer shooting in manual mode, that way I have complete control, especially when shooting aerials or wanting certain results with water flow, a cameras algorithm is never going to know what speed to give you. Cheers!

Hello William, I have just seen your interview with Nick Page and have two questions. I wasnt sure if I posted them in Nicks interview comments whether you would see them. So I have posted here. In the interview you mentioned keeping a record of places/ideas for locations you would like to photograph. How do you keep a record of them? And two how do you get an idea on how or when the good atmospheric conditions might happen? Thanks, Scott

Thanks for the following Scott! I have a detailed topographic map for the South Island, on my phone. On this I am able to leave pins, to mark areas of interest. I know the landscape here quite well, including the weather and what will typically make for atmospheric conditions and good light etc. Clearing rain is always a good start, especially with so much forest you're going to get a lot of evaporation out of the trees. To be honest though, the best time is anytime, just get out there and you'll most likely be pleasantly surprised in some way by nature. I don't overly plan stuff as that can become too structured. I find it best to be out there and see what speaks to me. Hope that kinda helps!

Great video Will. Definitely good information. I was wondering if I could ask a question off of this subject? As a few of us are getting a little more serious with our photography, printing, selling etc. What are you thoughts on photographers logos? In you work flow, when is it appropriate or not appropriate to add your logo to the picture, particularly in selling prints, etc. I look forward to your response. Maybe you could compile your thoughts in one of these quick videos on the subject. Thanks Will.

Thanks Tom and no problem at all. Man years back I use to put a watermark on my digital images but eventually stopped. If it is to protect the work, unfortunately it is so easy to crop or simply clone them out. If it is for promotion, most people don't read the watermark anyways, especially these days. If anything, I find them distracting. Obviously some more-so than others. Any print or physical medium should definitely have a signature on there though. This adds authenticity and value, but I personally wouldn't put a logo on a print. I feel like that instantly makes the art look un original, like it's part of a batch process. So in short, I don't add anything unless it's a physical print or canvas, and that's where my signature is put on, subtle in the corner. Anything online I leave without. Hope that helps!?

@@WilliamPatinoPhotography Thanks so much for the fast and honest reply Will. That's exactly what I was asking. As I have been studying the photographers that I admire (You, Joel Grimes, and others) That's kind of what I have been discovering. Especially on the digital images. As you say, kind of looks not right. I am currently working through your Master class as I have time. Great information. Thanks for sharing your expertise in such a concise and easy to follow way. Best Will.
