A lot of it has to do with his position. He plays very deep and so doesn't get many goals/assists. It's a similar case with Jorginho. Pirlo played in the same position, but had arguably the best long range passing the game has ever seen, which led to many goals. He was also outstanding at set-pieces too. The average fan obsesses over goals and assists; this is why Verratti and Jorginho will get ridiculed for being announced as possible golden ball candidates. Fans will come out wth absolute crap saying these players don't do anything for the team, when in reality they are the heartbeat of the team in that they orchestrate the play. Verratti would get more recognition if he played higher up the pitch as a number 10, like an Iniesta, Zidane, Riquelme etc. Verratt has all the necessary skills for the role - great dribbler, supremely composed, bags of flair, fine vision...

Beautiful break down of Verratti's fundamentals. His game is part Pirlo, part De Rossi with a sprinkling of Gattuso sometimes. Love to see him go to ground because his timing + judgement are very accurate. At the highest levels of the game sometimes he even can mistime these decisions, playing against great attackers. But its a percentages game that more often or not he succeeds in, because of good choices he makes. He is also nimble + fast to get back to his feet, often using the momentum of the slide or tackle itself. So this gives him confidence that he wont leave his side outnumbered, if he doesnt win the ball on the initial challenge. The failed attempt might be enough to hold up the progressing player with the ball, long enough so Verratti's own defenders can regroup and support him, or re shape. The Messi challenge looks calculated for a few reasons. First of all, his right leg is closest to the ball and Messi. Bringing the left leg across will be a fraction slower than the right one. The left leg will also telegraph Verratti's intention more because its further away. Something Messi can exploit given the opportunity. When contact is made Verratti is on his left side. Not back down or face down. On the approach he realises the danger because its Messi. He needs enough contact to win the tackle clean, thus choosing his own stronger right foot and heel to connect with the ball first. But by being on your side, close to the opponents feet, it can make the defenders body a higher hurdle to jump, if Messi manages to accelerate to the ball before him and scoop it over the slide coming in. Verratti's backside is the insurance policy. Its bigger and wider than just a leg. So when the contact with the ball and Verratti's right foot is made, the glutes hit the standing, stronger left leg of Messi, insuring he wont be able to stay on his feet afterwards anyway, whether the ball is touched first or not. As a defender i liked clean tackles but i loved a tackle which i could win the ball first and leave something on the man afterwards. If you get a flair, flamboyant, attacking player wet, dirty and hitting the ground often when they dont want to only helps to discourage them running at you. If you can do it without being warning be the ref, keep going. Verratti knows he isnt in the box so at worst its a freekick from a wide angle or a throw in. Maybe a yellow if Messi creates a clean path and moves the ball. But by choosing to connect with his right heel it turns the situation from a 50/50 duel to one much more in his own favour. The Referee's view is massive here also. Sometimes challenges can be judged based upon who looked in the worse possession leading up to the actually tackle, more so than the tackle its self, because the speed is too quick to judge. But if the officials cant see enough excessive force, the defender should come out on top alot of the time, especially if they get a clean connection.

Some interesting points especially the shielding part. One safe way of doing it is actually using the opponent to ounce off him. Pirlo was also very good at that, sometimes leaning back on the man marking him, to then bounce off him more rapidly. However I disagree that Verratti is good at defending. He is actually a liability defensively both for club and national team. The reason being the selfish nature of his defense, he only defends what's tacklable, so out of 10 instances, they will get passed him 7 times perhaps and 3 times he will make a spectacular clean tackle. Which will look good on youtube highlights. But his defensive contribution will be almost non existent. A good defensive midfielder will defend more altruistically to make sure of 10 attacks he will have an impact on not just 3, but 8-9 of them, not winning the ball but delaying the attacks and allow team mates to get back in position in numbers.

Do you loose the ball or you just don’t dribble ? If you are afraid to dribble, just know one thing : The intensity and agressivity, is much higher during games. There is a lot of pressure as well. And, loosing the ball in training has no consequences while in a game it’s much more risky to dribble. -So maybe you don’t dribble that well. A good dribble is also good under high pressure -or you just lack the confidence : you are too afraid of loosing the ball. You fear the reaction of your teammates and coaches.

When you mentioned that « it’s not hard to play with an opponent pressing on your back just because you where he’s coming from » I disagree I think it’s actually very hard cuz even if you can cover the ball well like Messi or lukaku does, you never know when a second player is gonna come to try stealing it from the front so you have to keep checking your 360 view all the time while you’re protecting the ball

Nah,speed isn't essential, however if you're a winger of striker,I'll recommend to work on your speed, because it can make a difference, even if you don't have it,you can play like a crossing specialist style of winger,or you can still be a traditional winger, use your close control and unpredictability to beat the defenders

It seemed to me that he lost his hunger for the game; his drive and determination. There were so many games in which he was passive and let the game pass him by, and when that happened, his side looked like they were down to men. It's a great pity because during the half of his career he was very impressive, particularly his vision. Inter's Calhanoglu is similarly frustrating in that he posseses the same kind of vision and attacking talent, but fails to assert himself all too often.
