Queen Bavmorda is played by an excellent British actress named Jean Marsh. Three years before Willow was released, Ms. Marsh had played the witch Mombi in the movie Return To Oz.

That is _SUCH_ a cool (and cheesy) movie. Is more in the same vibe of the original story (vs. where The Wizard of Oz took it, which I love also, no hate there) and it does a good job of combining elements from the WoZ sequels The Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz.

There is a deleted scene that helps to flush out why Sorsha turns. It turns out that Sorsha was actually the Princess of Tiras Lee and she stumbles across her father the king (frozen in stone) and realizes that Bav Morda probably didn't deserve her loyalty.

Agreed with all of you. I mean, not that I blame her for falling for Madmartigan... "Your touch is worth 100,000 deaths" is a line that would probably work on me, ngl...but it would be nice to have there be a bit more of a reason...especially since their relationship prior to this was based on beating each other up and taking each other prisoner. Edit: Oh, and love potions, which are pretty sketchy as a concept to begin with.

This one is a fun, low-key fantasy adventure. Always got a kick out of the brownies. There are sequel novels by Lucas and Chris Claremont as well. Also a new Disney+ series, which I'm looking forward to later this year. Also also, a couple of years ago my wife and I were at DisneyWorld for Christmas and Warwick Davis was the narrator for the Candlelight Processional that week. We saw him with his family at the Avatar land section of Animal Kingdom. I didn't approach him since he was on personal time, but if he had crossed my path in an aisle or something I don't think I would have been able to stop myself from saying 'Out of the way, peck!'. I'm a bad person.

This is my all time favourite movie! I literally watched two copies on VHS until they wouldn't play anymore, then my husband got me the DVD with Warwick Davis's commentary - which I HIGHLY recommend! I could spout Willow trivia all day long, but I'll leave it at these: LOTR is an understandable reference as this was also filmed in New Zealand! A few years ago, Warwick Davis went to NZ on holiday with his wife and kids and happened to meet one of the twins who played the baby Elora Danon! The woman who played Willow's wife was a secretary who'd never acted before, and Warwick Davis's wife and father-in-law were both amongst the crowd when Willow brings the baby before the village council. Thank you for reacting to this wonderful movie! If I were to suggest another amazing movie (nothing like Willow) that often gets overlooked, it would be "Outlander". The one from 2008 with Jim Caviezel.

Perhaps the most notable thing about this movie is the unfortunately still rare appearance of dwarf actors playing actual full-blooded characters rather than just comic relief. While it's a bit eyebrow-raising that the Nelwyn are portrayed as a different species than humans, it's really not that different from their obvious inspirations in Tolkien's Hobbits, and I'm sure they all very much appreciated the chance to really show their acting ability. In particular, Billy Barty, who played the High Aldwin, was a lifelong advocate for people of non-average height to be treated with respect and dignity, and founded the non-profit organization Little People of America which provides them with support and resources.

Also note the most powerful beings in the movie were female. As someone who would have been under 4ft if doctors hadn't insisted on growth hormone injections it means alot to me to see smaller humans represented as well as women. Being small in a society that favours bigness is rough. We need more films like this.

There was actually quite a bit of backstory established for Sorsha that ended up getting cut, which probably would have helped your issues with her. Though it's also unfortunately easy to understand why it was cut, as it would have killed the light family mood the movie was going for: she's the product of Bavmorda forcing herself on a man from that kingdom she turned to stone.

The one thing I have to say about Willow (which I saw 1st run in the theaters on the Big Screen and LOVED), is that most of the movers and shakers in this film were women. The Special One Foretold, the Bad Guy, the Good Sage, even Willow's wife (who saves the story before Willow can pass on it). The men are all 2nd string to the Bad Guy witch Queen and even her daughter is pretty hardcore. Strong women, all of them. And Willow is basically just obedient and lets the women lead. Love seeing Billy Barty again (he coordinated the casting of 150 Little People for the 1939 Wizard of Oz, though he himself was too young at the time to be hired himself). Billy also appeared in Legend. Lovely seeing Val Kilmer in his youth. 3 yrs after this film he played Jim Morrison. You should react to his autobiographical film Val.

Fun fact Val Kilmer married that redhead he hooks up with (in the movie) in real life for a few years. Another fun fact is Warwick Davis who plays Willow was wicket the main ewok in return of the Jedi. When I was little my mom would say I looked just like willows daughter and it was hard for my mom to watch her cry when those mean pig monsters come looking for the baby. I'd like to give this movie credit for being the reason I called my babies "bobbins" and of the course the reason why I'll randomly yell "I stole the dikini baby!!"

You might have noticed Willow only uses two of the three magic acorns. The script originally had a scene where he used one against a shapeshifting fish monster, but they were having trouble getting the effects for the creature to work, and realized that with using up the acorn being literally the only effect the scene had on the story, they could just cut it completely and save their money for other parts of the movie.

Regarding Sorsha, the evil queens daughter: There are some things you should know. This is based upon a book. Sorsha could have been developed better in the movie. All she wants is the love of her mother. She does everything she can to please her. She wants acceptance. She wants her mother to approve of her. When she falls for Madmartigan, that is not simply for the sake of having a romance. It is the catalyst that puts Sorsha with a group of people who truly care about others, unlike her mother. She finds her acceptance. Also, Sorsha’s father is actually the king of Tir Aslean, and he is a good man (he is deceased). The “good king and queen who are prophesied to take care of the baby actually turn out to be Sorsha and Madmartigan. She is the rightful heir of Tir Aslean.

George Lucas was in a bit of a quandary after finishing the original Star Wars trilogy, as he was still bursting with story ideas, but making those movies had so insanely exhausted him (and even ended his marriage) that there was no way he was going to make them himself. So for several of them, he settled on farming the ideas out to other writers and directors while he simply took an executive producer credit. And Willow was easily one of the most successful of these, with him going back to his old friend Ron Howard who'd starred in American Graffiti (where he'd first confided to Lucas that he was interested in transitioning from an actor to a director). Audiences at the time didn't quite know what to make of it, but it's become quite a beloved movie over the years, especially among people who first saw it as kids.

Actually Willow wasn’t that successful, it was considered a box office failure after making $80 million on a $20-25 million budget.

Great review 😁 your first viewing was the extended version, the one for kids had way less guts and gore, I was 12 before I got to see the full uncut version, those brownies are the best...I know the film word for word, the romance part was a bit silly but films were like that back then. Can't wait for the next review xxx

@@OGBReacts the full version is much better and does make way more sense then the kids one, with out the violence in places you have no idea how some of the stuff ends up happening ... plus the extended version has more of Val Kilma lol so that's a big plus hehe

Yeah, Sorsha's character wasn't really well developed. I just chalked it up to her being The Hot Chick 'cause that's sorta what the fairy tale movie plot formula seemed to call for and, like so many other stories, they just assumed it'd work itself out. (I had no idea this was based on a book and there was a deeper backstory to her character, so that was cool to find out from another's comment!)

Anyone notice the parallels to Star Wars? Willow = Luke Skywalker Madmartigan = Han Solo Raziel = Obi-Wan Kenobi Bavmorda = Palpatine Airk = Lando Calrissian And Madmartigan and Sorsha’s relationship is love/hate like Han and Leia’s. Of course George Lucas was involved in the making of this movie and the same people who did special effects for Star Wars did the effects here.

No, I don't think the Lord of the Rings vibes are any trick of your imagination. I think that was very deliberate not he part of the filmmakers. Fun Fact: Warwick Davis was *17* at the time when he filmed this role. Never ceases to amaze me how convincingly he took on that persona of husband and father. AS A TEENAGER.

I saw this when it first came out and even then at 19 I had the same complaint about Sorsha not having a larger role, but I gave it a pass for two reasons. First, she's a total badass. A chick that can shoot a bow or swing a sword is super hot (years later, I met a girl that could do both). Second, it's Joanne Whalley.... Yup. :) What? I was 19.

All of those years later, I still am disappointed that the acorn didn’t successfully turn Bavmorda to stone. You have Billy Barty (High Aldwin) foreshadow the acorn stone and then pay that off. It would have given Billy story respect. It would have also opened the story up for easier franchise building. Create a conflict. Willow didn’t beat Bavmorda. High Aldwin did.
