I thought the exact same thing. It felt like Willow was trying to emulate what she thinks a rock star should look like. Repeatedly sticking her tongue out (editors fault not hers) and the hand gestures came off as unnatural. When Avril hit the screen she seemed so natural and in her element. The scene where Willow is playing the guitar seems more natural for her but I still couldn't take my eyes off of Avril.

They compliment each other. Avril has matured and it shows. She was exactly the same as Willow when she was younger, jumping a lover the place. And I wouldn’t call this “rock”. It’s more “pop rock”, candy floss 😊

Willow is so versatile. She can comfortably jump from genre to genre and excel in each one. Its impressive and incredibly difficult to be able to do this transition as flawlessly as she has been able to do it. I write and produce my own music and have come to appreciate how much work and talent is needed to succeed in the music industry. Willow has more talent in her pinky toe than I have in my entire body. She is truly a jack of all trades and has plenty of growing left to do still. She is so creative and her potential is unlimited. I hope I can see the same kind of growth in my own music as I continue learning and practicing. I got a long ways to go! Great song Willow! 🔥❤️

@@lauren1211 absolutely, but since this music is slowly starting to gain a bigger following again, we need to stop comparing it to older stuff. Until this new wave of pop punk/alt rock music can truly fight its way back into the mainstream music (like hitting the Hot 40 on a daily basis, being played on pop radio, get millions and millions of streams, etc), it has to establish it’s cred as a popular genre again. Even the few successful pop punk-style songs of the last year are still treated like nostaglic blasts-from-the-pasts, and that needs to stop. That’s how the stupid Olivia Rodrigo/Misery Business thing happened.

So? Every generation has their own version of this song since bout early 1990's, unless ur willing to go back n include Runaways with Cherry bomb etc (when females were allowed to express themselves in this way and genre). I think far better than a v.sappy song bout being cool with a partner treating u like shit. 🤘 Gotta b honest was surprised with Avril joining, just coz she's become a bible basher in life n leaks into her new music, lotta behind scenes stuff not gonna go in2. Point being: if start pop with more assertive sound for females with Runaways 50+ years ago. Avril like some females in former yrs/decades, is giving this new opportunity for new generation of females a voice. Though no doubt Avril is also trying to give her own brand bitta relevance 2day 🤔

@@spacecadet2789 I thought she wass 13, not 9 when that came out… not that 13 is any better. I swear this is a total Mandela Effect for me. I’m not sure how to justify a 4 year discrepancy!?.!?.!?.’ Maybe I though she was older? Or maybe the song came out later on in life? I really don’t know how all that works when it comes to the ME? Now, I do know that at an earlier age, she had told her parents she wanted to age… and then around 15, she decided to step back from acting, music, and/ or “public eye”!!! And then around 22 or so, she sort of re-emerged from the background to form a band and sing and perform as a lead in her pop/ punk band…. Ahhh and see, here I am putting Willow’s age at 22 and she’s only 20. Doesn’t surprise me one bit that there isn’t timeline discrepancy within my memory of her timeline and reality today. I could have sworn when I saw her “story” being discussed, it was all pushed back and st an older age. For me, her hair whip incident was 13. Her dissapearing to “find” herself and be a “normal” teen, was around 15 and then her brother, Jayden, took over the limelight, and allowed her to sink into the background. Then around 19 she formed a band, wrote the album, and has been playing around LA in the pop/ punk underground scene. . I really thought she was 23. How strange!! It’s almost like the birth of who came first and who came second was reversed in this timeline. I swear, Willow was older than Jayden. And I had to look it all up.. and Jayden is older than Willow. I’m completely freaked out! Like this is a real ME for me.

Okay, this is EVERYTHING!!! This reminds me of the older Avril Lavigne music videos like Don't Tell Me and Complicated. “Grow,” is an anthem about self-care and doing all things necessary to advance on the journey towards self-improvement. And Willow was greatly inpired by Avril, not only because both started so young, but because she realized that she could ROCK without being too dark or angst. Other reasons are that she want to break the tensions and barriers of being a black artist in the rock industry. Willow has always pointed out how much she want to make changes, committed to art-making as a mode of progress and critical thinking and also being vulnerable. And can we talk about Avril Lavigne aka the motherfucking princess, PLEASE??!!

I love how current artists still ask for Avril collabs every time they do a pop/punk-rock song. I've been listening to her since I was in elementary school. I'm 20 plus now and she looks the same age as me. A true unproblematic rock princess and icon who stayed true to her style. Waiting for an Olivia Rodrigo-Avril Lavigne collab. That would be so cool.
